In 1988, sand dunes and the Missouri River set the stage for a vision to develop a master‐planned business and
residen al community with a golf course as its centerpiece. Visionaries would endure a state boundary change,
construc on of an interstate interchange, purchasing of the Sioux City Boat Club and the challenge of building along
the river in order to succeed. Today that vision is Dakota Dunes, South Dakota—home to the 18‐hole Arnold Palmer
designed golf course.
Dakota Dunes Country Club opened on August 14, 1991 nestled among the wooded dunes and along the Missouri
River. An es mated 3,000 spectators watched as Arnold Palmer played the 18 holes at the private Club’s grand
opening. Following its incep on, Dakota Dunes Country Club hosted ten professional golf tournaments including
the Nike and Buy.com tournaments and has been rated best in the state by both Golf Digest and Golf Week.
In the summer of 2011 Dakota Dunes Country Club experienced the mighty Missouri as a flood forced an
evacua on of the en re Dakota Dunes area. The course’s grass died and four holes were damaged by the flood
waters or in the construc on of a levee built to protect the residents of Dakota Dunes. The Club reopened 16 holes
throughout 2012 a er reseeding the course with the newest hybrid of bent grass. Holes 17 and 18 were hardest
hit; in coordina ng efforts with Arnold Palmer Design Company, they were rebuilt bigger and be er and were
reopened in 2013—two years a er the flood.
