In spite of many unanswered questions, I believe. I believe in the living God, the joy of the universe, who is the pulse and purpose of all things seen and unseen, who from the dust of earth calls up living beings to be children of eternity, who through countless ages has provided for us many liberators and tirelessly seeks to bring victory out of defeat and life out of decay. I believe in Jesus the Christ, God’s true Son, who is bone of our bone and flesh of our flesh, who took upon himself the healing of the human race, who bearing the burden of our sins went to Golgotha carrying his cross, who was betrayed, crucified, dead and buried in a borrowed tomb, who on the third day was found to be gloriously alive, meeting with those who trust him and serve him to the end of the world. I believe in the Holy Spirit of God, within and among all who cherish Christ and his way, who brings hope out of despair, love out of apathy, and joy out of sorrow, who unceasingly regenerates and reforms the church that it may always be the contemporary body of the risen Christ, loving the world through prayer, word and deed.

Sermon Notes:

Key Concept: This week is about how Christians become new persons, not the same as before. Why? This week, faith is talked about in a number of dimensions, of which there are three: the Word of God, the work of Jesus, and the witness of the Holy Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit that gives us an experience of God’s love.

Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC) Update – September 30, 2018 The list of candidates is getting smaller. The discernment process is getting more intense! We cannot thank you enough for the prayers and supportive words we have received from all of you, including our prayer partners, Bible study groups, evening devotion groups, the session and deacons, international mission partners, staff members and ministers! “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” (Galatians 6:9, NIV). Since our last update, we have conducted interviews with several new candidates, have had extensive dialogue with references and listened to many sermons. We met with two of our candidates and their spouses for extended weekend visits which included meals, bible study, question and answer periods, worship, preaching and fellowship. What wonderful experiences God provides! And in the days ahead we will be considering whether to schedule another similar weekend visit. We look forward to further dialogue with our candidates and within the PNC as we continue our discernment. “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” (from 2 Corinthians 12:9, NIV). Life Long Learning

Where’s God?

Read: Psalm 23:1-6 Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me (Psalm 23:4).

Since ancient times, faithful Christians have spoken about what John of the Cross called the “dark night of the soul.” This “dark night” descends upon even the most faithful believers, upon those who have walked with God for years. In this dark night, believers can feel spiritually dry for unusually long periods of time, as if they’re just going through the motions of discipleship. It can feel as if God has refused to show up, as if He’s missing in action.

In the dark night, we’re afflicted by doubt. We might think that we must have done something sinful to be experiencing such dryness and darkness, so we scrape our consciences and scour our lives for sin. Yet even after we confess everything we can think of to God and other trusted believers, we feel distant from Him.

We can take comfort in knowing we’re not the only ones who’ve gone through this. We can take comfort in knowing that our feelings and sight, or lack thereof, don’t always tell us the truth about reality. That’s why Paul says, “For we live by believing and not by seeing” (2 Corinthians 5:7). And we can take comfort in the fact that God often works deeper faith through such dark nights. When we continue to seek Him despite the darkness that envelops us, we can come to a deeper, truer understanding of who God is.

For God is in the darkest nights and valleys, as King David described in Psalm 23:4, “Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me.” He will never leave or forsake His children (Hebrews 13:5). And as the psalmist confessed, when the Lord is our shepherd, we have all we need (Psalm 23:1). Let’s cling to that truth. Copied from www.ourdailyjourney.org - Our Daily Bread Devotional

Mission @FPCP Fitness in Christ Triathlon Relay Fundraiser Update—Thank You!! Last month on Saturday, August 4th, 12 members of FPCP participated in the Ann Arbor Triathlon in Gregory, Michigan to help raise funds and awareness for Hope Clinic, one of our church’s local mission partners. As of today, the team raised over $5,000! We thank you for your prayers, support and donations. The following FPCP members participated: Kathy Bernard (rode), Chris Carlson (swam), James Davidson (swam), Doug Heasley (ran), Carter Johnson (swam and ran), Lou Maceratini (rode), Julie Murphy (ran), Patrick Murphy (rode), Rich Rej (swam), Janie Roberts (swam, rode and ran), Alissa Rowe (ran), and Martha Schryer (rode). The event was a success in many ways; please see testimonies from some of the team: Lou Maceratini said, “It's great to share an activity that I love, cycling, with the wonderful group of people on the Fitness in Christ Team. Our Thursday night rides mix Christian fellowship, the enjoyment of nature (riding through beautiful Hines park), and exercise.” Carter Johnson shared, ―Definitely a challenging event, but only as challenging as you make it. The rules and course are given to you, but you get to run it at your own pace.‖ Alissa Rowe added, ―Being a part of the FPCP Fitness in Christ Team for the Ann Arbor Triathlon was an extremely rewarding experience because I got to grow closer to God as well as my church family while raising money for the Hope Clinic and running, which is an activity that I really enjoy doing. This shows how much of a privilege it is to serve Christ by pausing to remember that we can serve others by taking the time to use our various strengths, and that amazing things happen when we come together for this common goal. I'm already looking forward to participating in the triathlon again next year!” Kathy Bernard said, “I am thrilled that this event is open to people who have never participated in organized races/sports. I hadn't been on my bike for about 10+ years and Patrick, along with the rest of the team, encouraged me to give it a try. I have a 25 year old bike, a helmet and no other cycling gear BUT I managed to ride 14 miles for my team and for Hope Medical Clinic. It was a blast ... a wonderful way to serve others and do something for my health! I hope others will be encouraged to give it a try!” It is never too late to help support the team. You can still donate at www.thehopeclinic.org/donate. In the designated fund section please select FPCP.

Local Mission Update… So far this summer, the Local Mission Committee has delivered over 100 pounds of fresh produce to Northville Civic Concern! We will continue to collect through the middle of October. Thank you so much for your generous donations!!

Mission @FPCP

Interested in a unique mission experience? Our church has had a longstanding relationship with a Christian orphanage that is home to 60 children near Tijuana, Mexico called Colina de Luz. We had two amazing youth mission trips there in 2008 and 2009, and our National/International Mission Committee (NIMC) has supported Colina financially for many years. Additionally, in each of the last 3 years, a group of 13-15 adult FPCP members have traveled to Colina for a week-long Spring mission trip doing construction projects and connecting with the children and staff. We are excited to announce that we are returning to Colina again next year to continue building this incredible relationship! Our tentative trip dates are April 23

rd to April 30

th, 2019. Because of the nature of the trip it is open to adults 21 and

over (18 and over if accompanied by a parent/guardian). Many of our former team members will be returning and we truly hope new people will consider joining us! If you would be interested in attending an informational meeting about this mission opportunity, please contact Jim Bernard at [email protected] or 248-880-8680 by Monday, October 1st. Thanks! Presbyterian Women FPCP Partners in Earth Care – Let’s Recycle

Please look for the small blue recycle bins throughout the church – in the Narthex, Upper Room, Dining Room, upstairs kitchen and the Calvin Room. It’s simple to distinguish between what goes in the garbage (landfill) and what can be recycled within our church. In the garbage can, you can place napkins and plates. In the blue recycling bins, you can place juice cups, coffee cups (both without liquid), water bottles, church bulletins, paper and cardboard. These items will be placed in the two larger recycling bins that are placed outside each Tuesday morning for city recycling. Please help do your part by taking a second to determine which bin the item you are disposing of goes in. Church volunteers will empty the blue bins each Sunday after services.

Each of us, no matter what age, can be good stewards and care for this beautiful church and its grounds that God has entrusted to us!!!

Presbyterian Women – WE NEED YOUR HELP!!! PWPD In-Gathering Requirements

As requested by Presbyterian Women of the Presbytery of Detroit,

each year we are given a list of items we need to provide for the annual PWPD In-Gathering

which will take place from October 15-17, 2018.

There is a display board in the Narthex with tags of the items we must supply in order to meet our requirements.

Please stop by and take a tag of an item to purchase to help us achieve our goal.

Items range from Bibles to blankets, from socks to school supplies! Please return NEW item(s) to the appropriate bin in the lower level collection area.

If you wish to make a financial donation, please make the check payable to FPCP with Presbyterian Women on the Memo line. We will do the shopping for you!

All items are due by October 7th.

Thanks in advance for your support of this very important program helping the needy in the city of Detroit. Many items go directly to Second Mile Center.

PLEASE NOTE: We no longer need handmade items for Overseas Hospitals.
