This is Bilal defying Umayyah bin Khalaf, his master, saying
Ahad, Ahad, (He, Allah,is one), despite the burning sand under his
back and the heavy stone on his chest
And this is Khabbab adhering faithfully to the religion of Allah
despite being torturedby red hot iron being applied to every part
of his body And this is the family of !asir
being tortured, and "umayyah killed, but yet their Iman did not
#eaken$ theysteadfastly believed in the promise of the %rophet
& Be patient and endure,O family
of Yasir, for Paradise awaits you. 'itness the uhaairoon #ho
forsook their #ives,children and possessions,and crossed the desert
from akkah to adeenah #ith noprovisions apart from theirfaith,
emigrating to Allah and His essenger And look at
Abu *Ubaydah slaying his father on the day of the Battle of
Badr, And Abu Bakr as+
"iddee almost killing his o#n son$ and us-ab killing his o#n
brother, *Ubayd bin*Umair
.et us go back a little and see the Ansaar reaching out their
hands #ith a pledge ofallegiance to the %rophet on the night of
al+*Aabah They kne# full #ell that the
Arabs #ould unite against them and attack them from all
directions and that the bestof their men #ould be killed as a
result of this !et they considered their ne#
allegiance profitable and s#ore to fulfil their promises
#hatever happened to them
.et us see them sharing their homes, money and possessions #ith
their migratingbrothers, the uhaairoon and, as Allah ("'T) said
about them (#hich means)&Love those who emigrate to them, and
have no jealousy in theirbreasts for
that which they have been given ( from the booty of Bani
an-Nadir), butgive them (emigrants) preference over themselves even
thoughthey were
in need of that! /"urah Al+Hashr (01), Ayah 12
.et us listen to them on the day of the Battle of Badr, saying
to the %rophet & Goforth, O essen!er of Allah, to your desired
destination, for we are with you. "e
swear #y $im who sent you with the %ruth that &e'en( you
de)ided to )ross this sea,we would all follow you into it, not a
sin!le man from us will fall #ehind. Go forth
with the #lessin! of Allah.
And here they are on the day of the Battle of Uhud, defending
the %rophet , and
seven of them #ere martyred in the process And on the day of the
Battle of Hunayn,#hen 34,555 fighters turned a#ay from %rophet , 65
of the Ansaar rushed to the
rescue and clenched victory from the tribe of Ha#a7in and
gathered the booty The%rophet then divided the booty among the
members other than the Ansaar, giving it
to the first to flee and the last to return& those #hose
hearts have been inclined
to#ards 8slam The Ansaar then asked the %rophet & "hat is
our portion, Oessen!er of Allah* He said& Are you not satisfied
that others return home with
&the #ooty of( sheep and )amels, while you return with the
essen!er of Allah*They #ept and said& "e are pleased with the
essen!er ofAllah as a share and
portion.
.et us return to adeenah, to see Abu Bakr as+"iddee donating all
his money toeuip the uslim army, leaving for his children nothing
other than Allah and His
essenger And this is *Umar 8bn Al+Khattab giving half his
fortune, and Uthmaneuipping the #hole army at his o#n e9pense
.et us stand behind the trench, #hen the Ah7aab (the
:onfederates) besiege
adeenah for a month until the eyes grew wild and hearts reached
to thethroats!,and suddenly the faithful, driven by the po#er of
Iman, cried out& "his

other e9amples of the greatness of the first generation of
uslims, all #e can say isto repeat #hat Allah said in the =ur-an
(#hich means)&
%uhammad is the %essenger of #llah, and those who are with him
are
severe against disbelievers, and merciful among themselves 0ou
see thembowing and falling down prostrate (in prayer), see&ing
Bounty from #llah
and ($is) 1ood 2leasure "he mar& of them (ie of their 3aith)
is on theirfaces (foreheads) from the traces of (their) prostration
(during prayers)"his is their description in the "aurat ("orah) But
their description in the
njeel (1ospel) is li&e a (sown) seed which sends forth its
shoot, then
ma&es it strong, it then becomes thic&, and it stands
straight on its stem,delighting the sowers that $e may enrage the
disbelievers with them #llah
has promised those among them who believe (ie all those who
followslamic %onotheism, the religion of 2rophet %uhammad #4 till
the /ay of
5esurrection) and do righteous good deeds, forgiveness and a
mightyreward! /"urah Al+ath (>6), Ayah 412
