Before learning about Green Plastic, we want to tell you a few important

things about our planet:

You’ve probably heard of global warming. It happens because today we use energy for everything

we do. Producing this energy releases carbon dioxide (CO2) into the air. This CO2 contributes to the greenhouse

effect, which increases global warming.

Plastic is a material that was discovered over 100 years ago.

It’s very important to the economy and to people’s comfort:

It’s used in packaging to protect food; in car parts, making them lighter; it helps farmers grow and store food; it’s used to hold your

mom’s beauty products; to make refrigerators, televisions and computers; and much, much more.

There are many different types of plastic, and each has different characteristics: some are harder, while others are more flexible. And some are made from petroleum, while others are made from sugarcane or other raw materials.

Absorption of CO2Plants absorb CO2 from the air as they grow. It’s a way nature finds to fight against greenhouse effect.

Sugarcane is one of these plants. Sugarcane is a type of plant that grows in Brazil. It is also called biomass, because it generates energy. Whenever energy is created from natural sources that can regenerate, which means they never run out, like sugarcane, we call them renewable energy sources.

A great idea

Sugarcane absorbs carbon gas from the air as it grows

Green PlasticHow is

made from sugarcaneproduced?

When humans use energy in their day-to-day activities, CO2 is released into the air

Now that you’ve learned about plastics, global warming and CO2, it’s time to tell you about a great idea we had: Green Plastic!

And, don’t worry, it’s not actually green.

It’s made from sugarcane, which is why we call it green.

Is it really green?Green means that Braskem’s plastic

absorbs CO2 from the air and is recyclable. This means that your cup

of yogurt, bottle of shampoo and juice box made from Green Plastic all help

reduce global warming and can go straight to the recycling bin.

This ethanol is then used by a Braskem plant to make Green Plastic.

Other industries then use Braskem’s

Green Plastic to make various plastic products that make

people’s daily lives easier and more

comfortable.

After they’re used, these plastic products can be 100% recycled

Sugarcane is used by mills as a raw material and is transformed into “ethanol,” a type of alcohol.

GREEN PE

Braskem created a seal that will help you recognize

products that are partners of the environment because they’re made

with Green Plastic. You can find this symbol on many products:

Where can I find Green Plastic?

Food

Personal care products

Retailing

Agriculture and industry

Beverages

Cleaning products

Cosmetics

Green Plastic: a nature-friendly

solution

Now you know that Green Plastic is good for nature and is recyclable. But we haven’t told you that it’s just as robust as plastic made from petroleum.

This means that you can use Green Plastic to make many things with the same high quality as other plastics.

And what about this polyethylene? You’re right, there is one more thing you should know: sometimes we call Green Plastic “Green PE.”

“PE” stands for “polyethylene,” which is one of the most common types of plastic. It can be used to make lots of things.

Green Plastic, as you already know, is polyethylene made from sugarcane! See how easy it is?

Now that you know everything about plastic, share what you’ve learned with others! We’re sure that everyone will love learning more about Braskem’s Green Plastic.
