Located in the children’s section of the cemetery, the Garden of Angels, family and friends are invited to leave mementoes in the form of decorative baubles and messages. ‘‘It helps to ease the pain,’’ Thorak Regional Cemetery manager Matthew Cheminant. ‘‘We have many requests by the public for it.’’ This feature and more was unveiled at the open day held last Saturday. The new cremator was also on display, a welcome replacement for the 20 year old model previously in use at Thorak. Mr Cheminant estimates the cemetery has been open for 25 years. The cemetery’s landscaped grounds total more than 11 hectares and include lawn areas, denomination- specific areas including an Orthodox section and Muslim and Bahai lawn cemeteries, the aforementioned Garden of Angels and also the Palm Garden. The Garden of Remembrance also salutes military service personnel who have passed. A further 15 hectares of land sits adjacent to the current area. There are plans to provide tranquil vistas and spaces for contemplation on the land in future.
