LJMU’s Northern Ireland Outreach team is committed to offering the best possible information, advice and guidance to schools, students and teaching staff across Northern Ireland. We hope that you will find this guide a useful tool, in informing you of the many presentations we can deliver to your pupils in school, plus details of events which you and your students can attend here in Liverpool. Through these free school activities and campus based visits, we aim to inspire students to progress into Higher Education, raise aspirations and promote LJMU.

The NI outreach programme has played a major part in the University becoming the most popular institution for Northern Irish students, choosing to study in Higher Education outside of Northern Ireland.

The outreach team visit the region for two full weeks each year, usually in September and again around February/March, delivering on average approximately 80 presentations in schools/colleges each week, reaching over 5,000 students in total. In addition to this the University is represented each year at the two day Higher Education Fair at the Methodist College Belfast and the UCAS Fair at the King’s Hall Belfast. We hope that you will take advantage of all of our services, and would be delighted to meet you in your school/college this year.

Welcome to our teachers guide to LJMU services for schools and colleges in Northern Ireland

Why choose Liverpool John Moores University? LJMU is the largest university in the city of Liverpool, offering 25,000+ students an unbeatable experience in a modern, city centre based university. Ranked as the third best city in the world by Rough Guides in 2014, Liverpool is a fantastic place to study, providing students with all the excitement of a major city and the friendliness and sense of community of a much smaller town.

I chose LJMU originally because I thought the prospectus was very

informative and made the university look very welcoming, vibrant, and exciting. The structure of my course was very appealing, and I felt the grade requirements to get in were achievable. I wanted to gain an academic qualification but at the same time I wanted life experiences. Living at home was convenient but I wanted the challenge of living independently, learning to manage money, and attempting to balance my social life with studies. Having never been to Liverpool before, I chose LJMU based on the research I had done on the internet prior to applying. With me looking for adventure I wanted to move somewhere where hardly anyone would know me. Liverpool was the place; I wanted a city which was vibrant and great ‘craic’ especially on a night out. LJMU jumped out at me because it offered me everything I wanted; from education support to a mixture of activities.

Adjusting to life in a new city is different for everyone and it can definitely take some time. I came from a small village, so the first few weeks in Liverpool were a bit of a shock to the system as I’d never lived

anywhere so lively! But Liverpool is a really safe, friendly city and it didn’t take long to become my second home – I love it here!

Liverpool is very much a student city, everywhere you go you’ll be sure to see another student and hear a Northern Irish accent. It’s extremely easy to navigate your way around with the majority of places within walking distance.

Living in halls was a great experience; it is definitely the best way to meet new people when you first arrive in Liverpool.

During sixth form I visited an Open Day in Liverpool and fell in love with the

city. After exploring the city’s culture, shopping, nightlife and universities I decided that LJMU was where I needed to be. By the time I returned home I was already thinking about moving to Liverpool!

Liverpool is a very well connected city, and travelling from Northern Ireland is easy and inexpensive.

Students have the option of travelling by ferry with regular sailings from Belfast to Liverpool, or they can fly directly into Liverpool John Lennon Airport which is approximately 20 minutes outside the city centre and currently connects flights from Belfast and Derry. Manchester Airport is also only an hour away providing further flight options.

The first time I came to Liverpool was

by boat, from Belfast to Liverpool. I was scared but I loved it as the same time, a chance to get my own place and gain my independence. My family friend was correct, sailing down the Mersey I saw the Liver Building for the first time and it was amazing, the city was alive and full of hustle and bustle. My accommodation was brilliant it was exactly as it was described. Throughout my years at LJMU I have lived at various locations and everyone has been brilliant, you’re never too far from town or University.
