THE TWO STOREY, SPLIT LEVEL A+HOME has been deigned for the affordable market in Auckland. Why two stories? Other then the single strorey A+Home, the 2 storey A+Home will cater for the needs of a dense populated environment and the rapidly growing population in the inner Auckland area. Why split level? The split level idea arose from the topographical landscape of the Auckland surrounding. Auckland and its surrounding are shaped by hills. The Split Level design allows to level the ground floor access to both sides of the exterior. The Ground Floor provides ‘public’ areas as Living room, kitchen and a guest toilet. The upper floor contains of fully private areas as three bedrooms, the bath and a small study. Looking again at the split level idea, there is also a functional advantage. The parental guide is assumed to spend an important amount of time in the kitchen. As the kitchen is elevated to the living room and garden level the person in the kitchen is able to survey children who are likely to play in the lower situated area. The kitchen is close to the entrance to allow dropping heavy shopping bags immediately after entering the house. The location of the kitchen enables as well to survey out onto the main access road. Mechanical ventilation has been avoided, also the bath and guest toilet are ventilated naturally by open able windows. The study in the upper area receives naturally daylight and ventilation through the top glazing below the roof edge. The walls and floors are basically of concrete. External walls are of insulated sandwich panels to pro-vide thermal mass but also durability to the interior and the exterior. The roof should be an insulated light weight timber roof to decrease loadings and thickness of walls. All glazing is double glazing with an R value of at least 0.3.
