When you partner with A Family For Every Child, you make a difference in the lives of foster children and at-risk youth.

When families are in crisis, children and youth who are removed for their protection often find a loving home with a foster family. For too many others, though, the child welfare system simply doesn’t work. They wind up in placements that are not supportive or are shuffled from home to home, and never experience the love and respect that can make or break a life.

When these young people age out of the system at 18 or 21 years of age, they are often ill-equipped to navigate a successful path to a self-sufficient and independent adulthood. That’s precisely when they become most vulnerable — to homelessness, human trafficking, and a host of other threats and obstacles to their well-being and future happiness.

AFFEC’s services include mentoring, advocate services, family building services, and overall support to the child, extended family members, social worker, and potential adoptive families. We strive to build bridges and create partnerships with other organizations and nonprofits, both locally and nationwide. It is our goal that no family encounters undue road blocks that prevent adopting a child from foster care. Sponsorship support raised at this event helps to provide critical funding to our 13 programs supporting our mission of finding permanent and loving homes for waiting foster children both locally and nationally.

In a perfect world, every child would be born into a loving home with their families.

Unfortunately, this is not a perfect world and far too many kids are living in foster care or institutions. For those children in foster care, many of them are shuffled like a deck of cards from one placement to another, never really knowing when they will be uprooted again.

There is one particular story that comes to mind of a foster child that came to A Family for Every Child recently as an adult volunteer. As a 15-year-old girl, along with her brother with disabilities, they were taken from their home to Station 7, a place for runaways and homeless youth, with only one change of clothes for two weeks. Subsequently, they were then placed in a home with a foster mom who suffered from Multiple Personality Disorder. A short time later, after trying to take her own life, she was greeted at the hospital by her caseworker, who pro-ceeded to berate her with comments of how she was inconveniencing him.

This is only a couple of examples of trauma in this young girl’s life. In all, they were moved and placed 15 times. Keep in mind she was 15 at the time. This means 15 moves in 3 years. This is just one very short story of the over 500,000 children in foster care in the US.

Many of America’s child welfare systems are badly broken, and children can suffer serious harm as a result. Some will be separated from their siblings. Too many will be further abused in the system that is supposed to protect them. Instead of being safely reunited with their families or moved quickly into an adoptive home, many will languish for years in foster homes or institu-tions.

It is a continued mystery how the verification process and system of vetting foster parents continues to let these children down. Not to mention the process of checking on the continued welfare of these displaced youth. As we all know, this system is very broken and does not appear to be changing any time soon. This is why we need your support.

Here are a few statistics to ponder in the US: The average age of a child entering into foster care is 8 years old. 32 % of children who are eligible for adoption must wait at least 3 years before they will be adopted. There are 3,000,000 annual reports of child abuse. 5 deaths a day due to abuse. 59% of abuse is neglect. There is a report of abuse every 10 seconds.

Many foster children are aging out of the system with nowhere to turn, ending up homeless, in jeopardy of being subjected to sex trafficking, drug abuse, incarceration, etc., and with no one to support them in their transition to adulthood.

It is our mission to get these children out of foster care and get them into their forever families and stop the abuse and neglect. Imagine if these children were your own kids, nieces, neph-ews, grandchildren, etc. What would you do?

How Does Your Support Make a Difference?

Your sponsorship will support the nearly 500,000 children living in foster care in the United States, 1,000 of these children live in Lane County. Your support allows us to:

Provide mentoring services to foster and at-risk youth in Oregon.

Conduct family finding searches that investigate and identify natural supports for children in our program.

Provide extreme recruitment services that assist children with the most immediate need for permanent placement, such as children with long histories in the foster care system or children with time-sensitive special needs.

Facilitate online matching events that utilize interactive, user-friendly technology to match children and permanent families, not just in the Pacific Northwest, but across the nation.
