Luke 16:1-12 (NRSV)

“Then Jesus said to the disciples, ‘There was a rich man who had a manager, and charges were brought to him that this man was squandering his property. So he summoned him and said to him, “What is this that I hear about you? Give me an accounting of your management, because you cannot be my manager any longer.” Then the manager said to himself, “What will I do, now that my master is taking the position away from me? I am not strong enough to dig, and I am ashamed to beg. I have decided what to do so that, when I am dismissed as manager, people may welcome me into their homes.” So, summoning his master’s debtors one by one, he asked the first, “How much do you owe my master?” He answered, “A hundred jugs of olive oil.” He said to him, “Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it fifty.” Then he asked another, “And how much do you owe?” He replied, “A hundred containers of wheat.” He said to him, “Take your bill and make it eighty.” And his master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly; for the children of this age are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than are the children of light. And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of dishonest wealth so that when it is gone, they may welcome you into the eternal homes. Whoever is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much; and whoever is dishonest in a very little is dishonest also in much. If then you have not been faithful with the dishonest wealth, who will entrust to you the true riches? And if you have not been faithful with what belongs to another, who will give you what is your own?’”

Brad & Victoria Walgren CHORAL CALL TO WORSHIP “God Is in This Holy Place” Brahms/Hopson CALL TO WORSHIP: L: Welcome, one and all, to this house of God. As this is God’s house and we are all God’s children, this church is home to all of us; the longtime member and the first time visitor, alike. P: We feel the welcoming presence of the Lord and have come to God’s house this day to learn where God might lead us in our lives. L: As we seek God’s direction for our lives together, may God speak specifically to each one of us in our hearts and give us guidance through the music and the spoken words. P: May we then, upon hearing God’s voice, have the faith to act in accordance to the directions God gives. Amen. HYMN “Dear Lord and Father of Mankind” No. 639

CONFESSION OF THE CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY Prayer of Confession: (In Unison)

Lord of all creation, all things have been made by you and, therefore, belong to you. Though we have things in our possession, may we remember that what we possess ultimately belongs to you. Forgive us when we forget this and act as if what we have is ours. Remind us that you have placed things in our hands so that we might use them not only for our own benefit and that of our families, but also for the benefit of others around us. Help us to be shrewd with what you have entrusted to us so that it might bring glory to you. May we invest this earthly wealth so that we build eternal treasure. Amen.

Announcements for September 22, 2013

SPECIAL CONGREGATIONAL MEETING

A special congregational meeting has been called for Sunday, September 29th, at 11:45 AM in Souers Hall.

The purpose of the meeting is to present a recommendation from the Board of Directors seeking approval of the congregation for possible acquisition of property adjacent to the Church. Please plan to attend this important meeting. A minimum of 10% of the memership (100 people) is necessary for the meeting to be held.

TUESDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY

10:00 a.m. in Souers Hall The "Greatest Story Ever Told" is more than just a cliché. God goes to great lengths to rescue lost and hurting people. That is what The Story is all about—the story of the Bible, God’s great love affair with humanity. Condensed into 31 accessible chapters, The Story sweeps you into the unfolding progression of Bible characters and events from Genesis to Revelation. Using the clear, accessible text of the NIV Bible, it allows the stories, poems, and teachings of the Bible to read like a novel. The study is facilitated by Pastor Jim Butler.

TABLE TALK

Table Talk is a new Bible study and discussion opportunity that will take place on Wednesday evenings in Zieske Hall at 6:45 p.m., following the dinner. The participants will watch a video clip from the previous Sunday’s message, and each table will receive a discussion guide. At the conclusion of the discussion, a spokesperson from each table will summarize the takeaway points from his or her table along with questions raised from the text. Table Talk will be an excellent way to meet new friends as well as benefit from an in-depth study of the Bible text from the previous Sunday.

ALL CHURCH PICNIC VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
