It gives me great pleasure to note that BD Biosciences, BD India Private Ltd and Jamia Hamdard University TMhave expanded their educational efforts for teaching of flow Cytometry by setting up the FACS eLEARN
Program. This should go a long way in expanding the opportunities for students from all over India and the
neighboring countries to get proper training in applications of this important technology through the
internet.
The Indo-US Cytometry Workshops have a long standing partnership with BD Biosciences in India and the
leadership of Jamia Hamdard especially Dr. G.N. Qazi who was one of the first to host an Indo-US Cytometry
Workshop as the director of the Regional Research Labs in Jammu. We are looking forward to our continued
collaboration by holding future Indo-US workshops at Jamia Hamdard University and hope the students who TM
participate in the FACS eLEARN program will attend these to expand on their training.
I wish this joint effort best of luck as it will go a long way to fill the need for continuing education in
applications of flow Cytometry in biomedical research and patient monitoring.

I am happy to note that our collaboration with Becton Dickinson (BD) Biosciences is going to take a new
dimension with introduction of joint educational programs in Flow Cytometry. Jamia Hamdard has strived to
develop strong linkage with industry. We highly value such a relationship with the partners who are
internationally acclaimed for their R&D and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts. BD is a world leader
in flow cytometry. Besides, they are also known for their highly successful efforts in creating trained human TM resource in flow cytometry. The BD-JH FACS Academy at Jamia Hamdard which is one of its kinds in this
TM region of continent is a vibrant hub of activities. Training programs of the FACS Academy are highly popular.
TM Researchers from all over India and other countries have been trained at the FACS Academy. I am confident TM
that academic programs named as FACS eLEARN initiative will be unique blend of theoretical knowledge
and hands-on exposure to the wonderful technique of flow cytometry which has found its increasing new
applications in the fields of science and medicine. The curriculum for these programs is very comprehensive
which will enable researchers to fully understand functioning and applications of the technique. There is no TMplace like BD-JH FACS Academy in this country where such a large range of state of art flow machines are
under one roof. During hands-on assignment researchers will have opportunity to try their hands on many of
them.
I congratulate team at BD and Jamia Hamdard Coordinator of the program for conceiving this initiative and
wish all success to it.

Since 2001, I have taken part in the INDO-US Cytometry Workshops organised by Dr. Awtar Krishan. During
those years there has been an enormous growth in the number of flow cytometers in India. There has also
been a concomitant growth not only in the number of competent operators but also in the quality of work
being produced.
The demand for training has also grown and it is now an opportune time for a new certificate and diploma in TM
Flow Cytometry. I am delighted to work with BD India and Jamia Hamdard on the FACS eLEARN initiative to
continue to drive up the standard of work carried out in laboratories in India.

TM FACS eLEARN Prospectus-2015
TM FACS eLEARN
TM FACS eLEARN is a joint program where industry and academia have come together to develop capacity in one
of the most advanced techniques in Biomedical Sciences, that is, Flow Cytometry. There were days in India
when Flow Cytometers were limited in number as it was an expensive instrument and reagents were not
readily available. However, in last decade Flow Cytometry has gained momentum. The applications of Flow
Cytometry have been expanded and are now found in basic science, applied science, medical science and
plant science. Now flow cytometers have been installed in several research institutions, hospitals and
universities.
At various scientific forums, a need has been felt that India should have trained professionals who are able to
handle Flow Cytometers and interpret effectively the generated results. Since BD is associated with Flow
Cytometry, it has always perceived this need and has been actively involved in training professionals in this
field of advanced technology.
TMBD and Jamia Hamdard established a Flow Cytometry training and education facility named “BD-JH FACS nd TM
Academy” on 2 March 2012. The FACS Academy has been established in Jamia Hamdard campus with
state-of-art Flow Cytometers under one roof. It has trained 350 users across the country and overseas. The
response has been overwhelming. However, the routine operator training comprises a 2-4 days module.
Through the feedback of trainees as well as from various users and resource persons it has emerged that a
structured academic program would be immensely helpful. Moreover, a Certificate or Diploma course will not
only be helpful for their career in this field but also help them recognized nationally and internationally as TM
Certified User of this technology. Therefore, the FACS Academy has launched academic programs under the TMFACS eLEARN initiative to fulfill such a need.
TM Web Based Training Program - FACS eLEARN programs are designed for professionals who are already in a
job or a regular academic program and may not be available for regular contact time with the faculty. Hence, a
web based training program with e-mail support provides a ready access and opportunity to learn basic and
advanced Flow Cytometry at one’s own pace and convenience. The web module and e-mail support program
will be followed by a hands-on experience on Flow Cytometry instruments and applications.
In this e-learning format we have developed an alliance with Dr. Michael Ormerod; a UK based Scientist
renowned in the field of Flow Cytometry. He has authored or co-authored about 200 scientific publications
and a book “Flow Cytometry - A Basic Introduction”. He conducted a five day course on Flow Cytometry for the
Royal Microscopical Society for twenty years and still teaches on the course. He has also organized and/or
taught on courses in various countries including India. Furthermore, he ran a Distance Learning Course on
Flow Cytometry for the University of Ulster, UK for many years. He also runs a short introductory e-course on
Flow Cytometry for the Royal Microscopical Society.

any of the unit. In addition to the text and illustrations, you will be able to access example data files of typical applications.
You will be asked to analyze these files using a downloadable computer program.
Certificate Course in Flow Cytometry (CCFC)-
The web based certificate course comprises 5 units with assignments and 5-days hands-on program including evaluation
and examination. For the certificate course, first four units (compulsory); and one more unit, either the Unit 5 (Some
clinical applications) or the Unit 6 (DNA and the cell cycle) needs to be completed.

Previous batch scholars’ view about the program
Would you tell us a little more about your experience through this program
Dr. Uday Sudhalker is DNB in Pathology and works as a Specialist Pathologist at Lifeline Hospital, Oman "
“FACS eLEARN program included the basic flow cytometry book by Dr. Ormerod, online usage of software to complete the assignments and self-assessments that made this course a complete package and easy to understand. It was really a good experience to be with such a knowledgeable faculty who covered as many and research applications as possible”.
Dr. Samir Agarwal is MD Pathology and currently working as a long term trainee at Dept. of Transplant Immunology at AIIMS, New Delhi.
“My experience of the course was very enjoyable and a great learning curve. The course content was well designed and executed. The faculty members came across as extremely knowledgeable, ever willing to lend an ear to queries and provide solutions. The hands-on module was very well organised and designed to provide an overview of the spectrum of applications of flow cytometry”.
Dr. Kaneeka Bhatnagar is MD Pathology and works as a Senior Pathologist at DMCH, Ludhiana.
“It was a wonderful experience at FACS academy. This course was like a foundation course making understand flow cytometry in a simplified way. During the course, we were provided exposure to various available instruments”.
Would you tell a colleague about the program
Dr. Uday Sudhalker: “I will definitely recommend my friends and colleagues to opt such and informative and useful certificate/ diploma course”.
Dr. Samir Agarwal: “I have discussed about the course and its relevance in advancing my understanding of the science of flow cytometry, with my colleagues”.
Dr. Kaneeka Bhatnagar: “I would strongly recommend this course as the basics and different aspects are covered simultaneously. Being a pathologist myself, this course has given me confidence to deal with a flow cytometer and its various aspects. The technical stuff is as much important as the data analysis and for a good analysis, understanding of the instrument is really important”.
