Here are some sug-gestions for specificgames and concerns :

Rebel Assault: I fyou are experiencin gany problems, pleas ecreate and use a bootdisk for your A :drive . To do this, fol-low the instruction sin the referenc ecard, making surethat you disable th eHimem .sys line ,your memory man-ager and any dis kcaching utilities ,such as Smartdrive .We now have a boo tdisk maker utility

available online i fyou want assis-

tance withthis process .If you have

a joystick, don't load your mouse driver . Use the"joystick only" option. Next, check the CD for dir tor scratches, and clean the underside with a dry ,clean cloth . Most of the concerns people have withthe game are resolved with these simple steps .However, if it still doesn't work, take a look at th efollowing questions :

►Does the game run fine with no sound, o rdoes the sound echo or have static? Refer to thesoundcard documentation and/or the soundcar dcompany's technical support staff for informatio non how to change the IRQ or DMA . You migh talso want to ask them if you need to add informa-tion to their device lines to take care of the soun dquality issues .

►Do you have an unexpected Interrupt/BadIFF header message or poor joystick control ?Download or order the Rebel patch.

►Lockups? This is usually an IRQ or DMAconflict . If the game still crashes when runnin gwith no sound, then use the Rebel patch .

►No sound on a 16-bit card? Go into the "con -figuration" screen for the game and choose"detect," ignoring any warning messages, to selectthe correct 16-bit channel settings .

►No sound at all? Rebel Assault only supportsfully digitized sounds that operate solely in theDOS environment without memory managementand on cards that are t00% Sound Blaster com-patible . Unfortunately, PC internal speakers ,AdLib cards, Windows Sound Systems and othersimilar cards do not meet these requirements .

X-Wing: If your sound card needs to run on aport address other than 220, you may either ordera patch from us or download it from a BBS .

Sam & Max Hit the Road' disk-based game . I fyou find yourself locking up in the Tunnel o fLove, you may either order a patch from us o rdownload it from a BBS .

Day of the Tentacle or Indiana Jones® and theFate of Atlantis CD-ROM games . If you haveproblems with sound or locking up, please use th e"detect" option for selecting the IRQ and Port inthe "change configuration" area for the game .Also, make sure you have at least 2 megs o fexpanded (EMS) ram available.

IRQ 10 . Our games through Day of the Tentaclemay need a soundcard setting of IRQ 7 or lowerbecause they were designed to run with sound -cards with only IRQ 2, 5 and 7 as options . Ournew games can use IRQ 10 .

Again, if you would like additional assistance ,please get in touch. Best wishes for happy gam-ing! r s c

Let Out the Throttle !New Adventure is Full Speed Ahead for Fall

This fall, LucasArts will introduceFull Throttle: a CD-ROM adven-ture set in a futuristic, dark, "roa d

warrior"-like world . Full Throttle fol-lows an outcast biker — on the runfrom the law for a crime he didn' tcommit — as he tries to set the recor dstraight. Tim Schafer, co-designer o fDay of the Tentacle;" is Full Throttle'sproject leader . Here he talks about thegame and describes how the Ful lThrottle team is getting the game offthe ground . Tim is joined by FullThrottle's lead artist and animator,Peter Chan and Larry Ahern respec-tively, who fill us in on developing thegame's art style .So what's Full Throttle about ?

Tim : It's about a biker named Ben ,on the run from the law because he' sbeen framed for murder. He has toride from town to town looking for the lost heir o fCorley Motors in order to clear his name. Along th eway, he runs up against other bikers, the law, and th eperson who actually committed the murder (who no wwants him dead, too!) .Is it set in the present day ?

Tim: No, it's not even set in this world, really. You mean, it's science fiction ?

Tim: It's not set in outer space or anything . It' sjust not strictly tied to reality. We made up all thebikes and other vehicles from scratch, and stuck i nstuff that we needed, whether that stuff had been

invented yet 0r not . The result was amix — some slick-looking hovercraftvehicles and some wild, sixties-stylechoppers . The only strict rule was it al lhad to be cool . Very cool .So it's all about cars and bikes ?

Tim : Well, there are a lot of car sand bikes in it. Also big trucks andhuge airplanes . They jump things, the ycrash into things, they blow up . But thething that really made me want tomake this game is the characters . I wa stalking to a friend of mine who ha dbeen riding with some bikers up i nAlaska, and the stories she had t0 tel lwere really entertaining . These peopl ewere wild . We could make a gameabout these people, I thought. Instea d0f being a nerdy-but-loveable guy likeGuybrush from The Secret of Monkey

Island or Bernard from Day of the Te ntacle, wouldn't it be fun to be a big, tough character ?It would be fun to play a huge guy who gets what h ewants for a change . That was the inspiration .Is it a comedy like Day of the Tentacle orSam & Max Hit the Road'" ?

Tim: It's got funny parts, but I wouldn't call it acomedy . You know – when Indy says, "Nazis! I hatethese guys!," it's funny . There are a lot of funny part sin Raiders 0f the Lost Ark'" or The Road Warrior, bu tthey're still action/adventure flicks .How far into production are you ?

Tim : Well, the design and storyboards are al l

done, and we're beginning to put the rooms in th egame and animate the characters . Peter Chan, 0u rlead artist, designed all the cool vehicles, and Richar dGreen, our 3D artist, has already made 3D models o fmost of them . Our lead animator, Larry Ahern, creat-ed looks for all the eccentric characters in the game .Those names sound familiar .

Tim : Peter and Larry worked on Day of the Tenta-cle with Dave Grossman and me . Peter was lead artis tthen, too, and Larry was lead animator . They als oworked on Sam & Max Hit the Road . Meanwhile ,

Richard Green was busy making 3D levels for RebelAssault :" They all have a lot of experience, and thatmakes things go very smoothly .What are the differences between Full Throttl eand Day of the Tentacle ?

Tim : As far as the main characters go, it's likethis : Let's say Ben and Bernard both walk up to adoor. It's locked . The only tool they have to help the mget through the door is a ham and cheese sandwichon white . Bernard would inspect the keyhole and seethat the key was still in the lock, sticking out the othe rside. He'd lubricate the floor with mayonnaise fro mthe sandwich, and slide a piece of bread under th edoor. Then he'd take out the toothpick and use it topush the key back out the hole so it would drop ontothe bread, and then pull the bread back under an dopen the lock with the key. Ben would eat the sand-wich and kick down the door . See ?

Larry Ahern and Peter Chan talk about creatin gthe game's art style. . .What was involved in developing the art/animationstyle for Full Throttle ?

Larry : The challenge that Tim, Peter and I have se tfor ourselves is to create an animated adventure tha tis somewhat of a black comedy, but one with a ton ethat is more "hyper-real" than real . We want to dosomething that is less cartoony than Day of the Tentacle

or Sam az Max Hit the Road, but still has a craz yedge to it .

Peter: At the beginning of any project, there'sincredible brainstorming . Each of us has his own ide aand vision for the look and feel of the game . My job isto find out what Tim and Larry want and combine i twith what I see . Sometimes that's not easy . We findourselves watching all sorts of animated movies an dfilms, looking through comic books, and bein ginspired by other reference material . What it reallyboils down to is that we want something bold, intenseand "in your face ." No matter what we come up with ,the animation and backgrounds will complementeach other .What kind of style did you settle on ?

Larry: We're going for a cross between cartoo nand reality . Ben is a biker in a serious world, but yo ucan't help but laugh at his reality sometimes . We'r ekind of hoping for a feel like The Road Warrior, bu tanimated with the volume pumped way up .

Peter: It's what we're calling "hyper-real ." I did myshare of research and came up with something thatfeels good . I was inspired by two comic book artists ,Nicholus de Crecy and Mike Mignola, for their use o fblack and their sense of design . Another source ofinspiration was an ingenious industrial architec tnamed Lebbeus Woods . With these influences I cam eup with my own interpretation of the style .Compare the art style and kinds of animations we'llsee in Full Throttle with what you did for Day of theTentacle and Sam & Max Hit the Road .

Larry: First, Full Throttle has been designed fro mthe start to be the most cinematic adventure gam ewe've ever made . We won't be sacrificing any interac-tivity, but we'll show the action much more dramati-cally than in previous games . Second, this is our firs tgame combining 3D and 2D animation to such a nextent. All the bikes and other vehicles are animate din 3D, but rendered in a style that fits with the D

character look . The result is biker action that wouldhave taken years to animate traditionally, but doesn' thave the mechanical look of some 3D .

Peter: Like Larry said, Full Throttle was designe dfrom the start t0 be the most cinematic adventur egame we've ever made . This isn't another cartoonygame . The style is very mature and simple, with stric tcolor schemes . It's very straight forward, with boldlighting and hard, long shadows.

Full Throttle reunites the Day of the Tentacle tea mon a story that encompasses . . .

Tim : Hey, wait a minute . This is my game, so Iget to end the article . Bye, everyone . Look for Ful lThrottle this fall . If you don't, I'll come looking fo ryou! E S C

This summer, LucasArts is introducing a spacecombat simulator called TIE Fighter and in doing so ,will write a new chapter in the Star Wars saga . For th efirst time in the history of the fantasy, the infamou sconflict between the Imperial Navy and the Rebe lAlliance is represented through the eyes of theEmpire . As new Imperial pilots, players must aid i nrestoring law and order to a galaxy riddled with chao sand assist in crushing the Rebel insurgence which, i fleft unchecked, is destined to wreak havoc .

Veteran game designers Larry Holland and Ed Kilham, the team responsi-

ble for last year's best -selling PC game, X-Wing;" are in the mids tof creating TIE Fighter.Larry took some tim eout to talk about hi swalk on the dark side.

Star Wars Insider :Where did the idea for

TIE Fighter come from ?Larry Holland: Th e

movies were introduced tous in the form of a trilogy ,as were the Timothy Zah nnovels . It seemed natura lto do a series of Star Wars -inspired games in thesame way. The serie

s started withX-Wing, and nowwill continue with TIE Fighter .

The twist is that in each gamewe examine the Rebel/Imperia l

struggle from a different point of view — X-Wing i sthe Rebel point of view ; the sequel, TIE Fighter, portrays the Empire's perspective ; and a third

game will offer up another outlook on the conflict .SWI : So do all three games take place during th e

time period ?LH : Actually they don't . They're sequential .

X-Wing and TIE Fighter are connected by a series ofevents just like Star Wars and The Empire Strike sBack. TIE Fighter starts up right after the Rebels hav efled Hoth .

SWI : Did you run into any kind of oppositio nwhen you proposed to do a game about the Empire ?

LH : I was quite amazed that there wasn't any .Everything so far was from the perspective of th eRebel Alliance. It's the classic story of the underdogagainst the evil side — the good and bad is very clear

SWI : How much material i nTIE Fighter is drawn from existin gsources and how much did youmake up? Also, what sources di dyou draw from and what are somenew elements you're adding to theStar Wars universe ?

LH : Certainly, the movies arethe starting point. They provide th efoundation of what the universe i sall about — the kinds of technolo-gy that exist in it and the struggl ebetween the Empire and the Rebel Alliance . That' sour source for the space crafts and many of the char-acters, like Darth Vader. The time frame of TIE Fight-er is co-existent with The Empire Strikes Back, so a lo tof the characters in TIE Fighter are in the secondmovie . Command — which extend theStar Wars saga beyond the movies .He introduced several new charac-ters, one of which is Grand Admi-ral Thrawn . We thought it wouldbe interesting to elaborate 0n someof Thrawn's early history with th eEmpire .

SWI : Who are some of thecharacters we'll meet in TIE Fight-er that we've never been intro-duced to before ?

LH : There's two really interest-ing main characters we're adding.One is Admiral Zaarin . He's very

important in the Empire's R&D technology corps .He's in charge of testing out new technology an ddeveloping new starfighters during a war time. Sinc ethe Empire is very interested in power and control ,technological strength is an important part of main-taining supremacy. This character is a brilliant techni-cian and researcher, but is very ambitious and eventu-ally seeks to overthrow the Emperor.

A big part of TIE Fighter is focused on the interna lstruggle within the Empire . Because of its size andcomplexity, the Empire's got all this political turmoi land in-fighting — factions are vying for power.

Zaarin thirsts for power an dthinks he can do a better jobof bringing order and harmo-ny to the galaxy than th eEmperor . The Emperor i susing these mystical powers ,whereas Zaarin has access tothe technology . In the game, there's a climax where Zaarinattempts to dispose of theEmperor and Darth Vader.

SWI: How's the playerinvolved in all of this?

LH : The player is part of uncovering Zaarin' splans. Because he or she has allegiance to the Empireand the military structure as it is, to take part in acoup d'etat, which is what's Zaarin's trying to do, is atotal breach of honor. Another main character isAdmiral Harkov . He's actually quite a despicabl echaracter who uses his command over several fleet st0 profit. His job is t0 quell interplanetary disputes —to make order out of chaos, establish trading route sand so forth . This is supposedly what the Empire' sdoing well — taking chaos and making order vi ainfrastructure that leads to prosperity for everyone . Inthis part of the story, Harkov is involved in a civil war ,but instead of using his power to settle things, he' sfeeding arms and resources to both sides to keep th econflict going for his own profit .

SWI : How do you make the player feel good abou tbeing part of the Empire, and how do you make th eRebel Alliance seem like the enemy ?

LH : This is our fundamental challenge . Ourapproach is that the propaganda machines are alway srunning full-blast during warfare . So far, the propa-ganda we've been exposed to has been from theRebels . But in warfare, neither side is always clean ,and both sides can try to take the moral high ground .So we're trying to blur the moral line a little bit an dgive the Empire a soapbox to communicate its mission

: the restorationof peace and order .For instance, there' sa lot of civil wa rgoing on . The fight-ing planets are lost intheir hate and don' thave the galactic per -spective the Empirecan provide . In thisregard, the Empirefeels it can serve t ostop these conflicts .

But really, this 0nly goes so far . You can't pain tblack into white, and no matter what, the Empire stillisn't very nice . This is why we've woven the internalstruggle into the story — to focus in on some of th egray areas inside the Empire . Within the Empirethere are a lot of people — like the pilot the playerportrays — who have an honorable objective . So, i naddition to fighting in missions, they butt up agains tsome of the more despicable characters in th eEmpire.

SWI : What elements of TIE Fighter make theplayer feel a sense of patriotism and accomplish-ment ?

LH : Like any soldier or pilot that enters into a vas tentity, they're not always focusing on the big pictur eor the big moral issues . What they're interested in issucceeding on a much more micro level . I thin kthere's a sense of accomplishment for the player a she or she rises through the ranks, engages in com-panionable competition with peers and tries to sur-vive in battle . There's also an award and promotio nstructure built into the game to motivate the player .It's funny though, because the first time players gointo battle, their natural inclination will be to blastTIE fighters out of the sky . But they'll have to holdback, or they'll be blowing up their wingmen . e s c

Kalani StreicherPRODUCER/PROJECT LEADE RDo you have a nickname ?

►Many people call me as The Kalanster . Friends andfamily call me Kalle .When did you start working at LucasArts ?

►I started in October of 1988 supervising foreig ntranslations including German, French and Italian .What do you like best about your job ?

►The creativity. I love the challenge and excitementof creating new interactive stories and games . I enjoy th eprocesses creative concepts go through (storyboarding ,graphic and programming implementation, technologi-cal enhancements) beforecoming out as "final" products .I also enjoy the people that Iwork with . Since the very firstday I started at LucasArts, it' sbeen a blast to come to work.Tell us your bestLucasArts' "war story . "

►Where do I start? There' sbeen so many in the last fiv eand a half years! Once I wasinvited to be on a TV showcalled "Straight Talk'N Teens "to talk about our new SuperNintendo game, Super EmpireStrikes Back,' and discuss howwe make games and how kids might be able to get intothis business . There I was, surrounded by fifty kids ,ready to field any question. Any question except, "Ho wmuch money do you make?" Should've known !What is your favorite LucasArts' game ?

►This is a hard decision . It really depends on th ekind of game. I'd say X-Wing, because I've been waitingsince Star Wars' to be a Rebel in an X-wing fighter . Andalso, Sam s Max Hit the Road," because of their weir dhumor, the mini-games, superb art and the way thosecharacters solve their cases .Where is your favorite vacation spot ?

►I really have two — Hawaii and Germany . Hawaiiis the ultimate in beauty and peace . Germany is where Igrew up and where my parents and sisters remain .What is your favorite food ?

►Schnitzel with Spatzle and gravy. . .Yummy Yum !What do you like to do when you're not at work ?

►I enjoy playing baseball, soccer and tennis . I'v ebeen known to participate in a paint-ball adventure ortwo, and I love swimming and wind-surfing. In the win -ter, I like snowboarding and skiing .Who are your heroes? Why ?

►I don't have any particular hero . There are people Iadmire and try to learn from because of their actions andaccomplishments in fields such as entertainment, sport sand business . I believe that everyone can become a heroif they put their mind to it.

Ron LussierLEAD 3D ARTIST/ANIMATO RDo you have a nickname ?

►Nope, just Ron .When did you start working at LucasArts ?

►I started in October 1991 as a "tester" in our Quali-ty Assurance department. After about six months of test-ing and spending most of my money on computer hard -ware and graphics software, I started in the art depart-ment as an art technician . I had been refreshing myknowledge of 3D graphics (I had some CG training i n'87), and a few months later I became the second artist inour 3D art group .

What do you like bestabout your job ?

►I like creating worlds o rinspiring a laugh — blowin gsomething up is always fun .Creating and "filming" thedogfight in the intro for Rebe lAssault - was the most enjoy-able sequence I've worked onso far. But I really enjoy th efact that what I'm doing nowis what I was dreaming o fdoing just a few years ago .Tell us your best LucasArts '"war story. "

►It's been a really longtime, but the only thing I can think of is a rather embar-rassing event back when I was a tester . I was testing Indi-ana Jones and the Last Crusade- on Commodore's CDTV .And, being a tester, I decided that the game should betested with a mouse one more time (we usually teste dwith the remote the system comes with) . I plugged in th emouse, turned on the machine and . . .nothing . I switchedback to the remote, then back to the mouse and . . . POP! . . .everything went dark (I HATE it when that happens) .What is your favorite LucasArts' game ?

►Sam & Max Hit the Road " (the "talkie") . Those tw oare just TOO cool !Where is your favorite vacation spot ?

►Yosemite . It's one of the most beautiful places I'v eseen . And it's good to get away from all the technolog yI've become so used to having around .What is your favorite food ?

►Oh, traditional stuff. . .pizza and beer. What do you like to do when you're not at work ?

►I have all my keyboards and musical equipmen thooked up to my computer and some MIDI sequencin gsoftware, so I play and write a lot of music when I hav ethe time.Who are your heroes? Why ?

►Peter Gabriel, because he puts so much feeling int ohis music . And John Lassiter, because of his great contri-butions in combining computer graphics and traditiona lanimation sensibilities .
