Jenny

Reuse, reduce, recycle
France was the first country in the world to ban supermarkets
from throwing away food.
In February 2016, France became the first country in the world
to ban supermarkets from throwing away or destroying unsold
food. Stores must now donate surplus groceries to food banks
and charities. Supermarkets, which are caught binning good
quality food approaching its ‘best-before’ date face hefty fines
of up to €75,000, or two years of imprisonment.

When the cathedral was built in the 13th century, local
workmen were employed and the 100th man was about
30 years old, fair, handsome and he had a beard. He
worked hard and always encouraged others and solved any
arguments with other workmen.
When the architect wanted to have a statue of God, the
workmen suggested using this man as the model.
He did, but when the statue was finished, the man
disappeared as mysteriously as he’d appeared.
Amazing Fact
Decouvrez la cathedrale d’Amiens
La plus vaste cathédrale de France.Notre-Dame d’Amiens is the largest cathedral in France.
Stand in front of the cathedral. You will notice there are 3 front portals (doors).
The centre portal is the portal of the Beau Dieu This is the statue called “le beau dieu” which means beautiful God.
What is the statue holding?
.....................................................................................
How many headless statues can you see on the front of the cathedral?
...........................................................................................................................
On the far left is the Portal Of Saint-FirminYou will see there are 12 signs of the zodiac. This picture shows the sign for Leo (August). On the cathedral above the sign it shows what people who work on the land are doing at this time of year.
What do you think they are doing?
...........................................................................................................................

There is a chapel on the right-hand side of the cathedral
where you can see a picture of a young girl talking to some
frogs. This girl lived many years ago and her name was
Ulphe. She had escaped from a nobleman and had fallen
asleep by a river where a hermit found her and took her to a
convent in Boves. One day, the hermit found the girl by the
river talking to some frogs. She explained that the frogs had
made so much noise in the night that she could not sleep
and had missed the morning service. It is said that the frogs
never croaked again!
There is a famous maze on the floor of the cathedral, which is 234 metres long. Pilgrims who visited the cathedral used to follow the maze to the centre – sometimes they did this on their knees. Can you trace a path to the centre?
Why not have a go at doing it for real?
Enter the Cathedral and look out for le labyrinth

French music please
The French government initially made radio stations play
at least 40% of all music in French to protect France
from what the government considered the English
language cultural invasion. However, after a 24-hour
protest by French radio stations, French MPs voted in
favour of reducing the quota to 35% in 2016.

Inventive French people
The French invented tin cans, the hairdryer, and the hot air
balloon. It turns out we have the French to thank for many of the
useful inventions we know and love today. For instance, French
inventor Nicolas Appert came up with the idea to use sealed
glass jars placed in boiling water to preserve food in 1809. Pierre
Durand later invented the tin can. Braille was also developed by
Louis Braille who was blinded as a child. Meanwhile, physician
René Laennec invented the stethoscope at a hospital in Paris in
1816 and Alexandre-Ferdinand Godefroy patented the world’s
first hairdryer in 1888. The Montgolfier brothers took to the skies
in a huge inflated hot air balloon – a world first!

A fishy factIf you happen to be in the country on 1 April, don’t be surprised if children try to stick paper fish to your back and call you a ‘Poisson d’Avril’ (April Fish).
