A Note from the Executive Director

It is my privilege to share with you the great successes of DAIS programs last year and the impact they have made in the Dane County community and, most importantly, in the lives of survivors of domestic abuse.

After a full year in our new facility, DAIS is so much more than just a building. DAIS provides a healing space and a safe home, or a supportive phone call day or night. Advocates extend a helping hand to help overcome barriers, and navigate life’s challenges. DAIS encourages thought provoking discussions as well as space to process and rebuild.

In addition to services provided in 2015, DAIS conducted a Community Needs Assessment to inform our strategies for community collaboration and program planning. Also in 2015, DAIS launched the first Texting Help Line in Dane County to increase access to services for those experiencing teen dating violence. Additionally, DAIS continued to expand its prevention program in order to address the root causes of intimate partner violence.

This report is a reminder of the impact we are making in the lives of survivors of domestic abuse, but we know that more work still needs to be done to create lasting change. As DAIS moves forward, we continue to build an organization that operates from a position of strength and stability. DAIS is focused on providing a service continuum to help victims become free of violence in their lives. As a community we need to address what stands in the way of victims reaching out for help: fear and shame are among the strongest of these barriers. Only by working together can we transform Dane County into a community of hope and safety.

Shannon Barry, MSSW Executive Director

“ With the help of DAIS, I am in

the right place to pursue a life

that makes me happy and one

that I know I deserve.” - Former DAIS Client

2015 Program Expansion Highlights

“ I cannot express enough thanks to each of you for the years of support.

I am the woman I am today because of you.” -Former DAIS Client

2015 Annual Report 3

Pictured above are a few of the advocates who help break down barriers for victims of domestic violence every day.

Texting Help Line:Thanks to generous support from Dean & St. Mary’s, DAIS launched a Texting Help Line to provide an additional point of access for those

experiencing teen dating violence. Nearly one in three teens who have been in relationships have experienced dating violence. Access to a free and confidential Texting Help Line allows teens, as well as anyone impacted by domestic violence to reach out to a trusted and safe source for the support they need.

Community Needs Assessment:DAIS gathered feedback from a total of 216 individuals from three main stakeholder groups: domestic violence survivors, community partners, and DAIS staff

and volunteers. The results from the 2015 Community Needs Assessment helped to validate our current service model and offered insights into possible expanded programming in the future.

24-Hour Help Line: The Help Line is the gateway through which clients gain access to DAIS services. Help Line Advocates provide clients, as well as family, friends and community members with support, information, referrals to other community agencies, and safety planning.

Legal Advocacy:Legal Advocates help clients file for restraining orders and prepare for final restraining order hearings. They also provide in-person support during hearings, as well as support and advocacy in the civil court and family court systems. Legal Advocates are not attorneys and do not provide legal advice.

Community Response:Community Response Advocates provide clients with face-to-face emergency safety planning, basic restraining order assistance, housing information, support, and referrals to other community resources.

Emergency Shelter:DAIS operates the only emergency shelter in Dane County for victims of domestic violence and their children. Shelter Advocates provide intensive case management, family safety planning, food and clothing, and information and support.

“The best thing you did for me today was just listening. You can give me all the resources in the world, but you are the only person who ever really listened to me. How many times can I say thank you…it seems it will never be enough. A little part of me just came back.”

- Former DAIS Client

2015 Annual Report 5

MENS (Men Encouraging Nonviolent Strength):MENS Clubs are the main primary prevention initiative that DAIS provides. MENS Clubs work with high school aged male youth and are community-based and collaborative programs, helping to address the root causes of gender-based violence. DAIS co-facilitates these clubs with a male facilitator from the school or community center providing programming that focuses on gender roles and expectations, communication, conflict resolution, and healthy relationships.

CAPE (Community Awareness Prevention Education):The CAPE program offers workshops, presentations and trainings tailored for specific groups to raise awareness about domestic abuse and promote healthy relationships.

Support Group:Support Groups help clients decrease their isolation, increase their safety, and connect with other DAIS services and community resources. DAIS offers five weekly support groups, including one in Spanish, and one monthly support group for friends and family members.

Children’s Program:Children’s Program Advocates help children process their experiences, provide them with safety and structure, promote non-violent conflict resolution, and use positive discipline techniques. This program also provides trauma-informed, family-centered programming that focuses on strengthening the bond between the protective parent or caretaker and the child/youth.

Statement of Financial Position

2015 Financial Statements

*This year’s deficit was planned in the organization’s multi-year operating budget, which is being supplemented by funds from an operating reserve established during the capital campaign. The reserve supports the organization as it builds its capacity to respond to an increase in community needs. The organization will spend down the reserve over the next several years, as it works to increase revenue from other sources.*

The 2015 Statement of Financial Position and Statement of Activities have been approved by Wegner LLP. Copies of the Complete Audit Report are available upon request. DAIS complies with all applicable state and federal reporting requirements.

Thank you to our donors, volunteers, and funders who help create a lasting impact in our community. Your generosity ensures that survivors have the support, tools and resources they need to feel safe and empowered. Domestic violence is not an issue that will be solved by DAIS alone – it requires us all. Together, we can build a nonviolent community that promotes safety, peace, justice, and hope.

You and DAIS. One. And for all.

Special thanks to:

Our mission is to empower those affected by domestic violence and advocate for social change through support, education and outreach.
