A leader’s job is to look into the
future and see the organization not as it is but as it SHOULD BE.

LEADING INTO THE FUTURE | 1
WELCOME
WELCOMEWelcome to beautiful Lake Chelan and Leading Into the Future, this year’s WASA Superintendent Workshop!
Each year at this conference, we gather with our fellow superintendents to learn with and from each other in a relaxed setting. As we reflect on this school year and look to the future, our leadership will continue to make an impact at the local, state, and national levels. As we continue leading into the future, our very important and difficult work will lead the way to ensure we keep the focus where the focus should be—on our students.
This year, along with our important state and federal legislative updates, we have planned an experience allowing us, as superintendents, to dive into our leadership philosophy and models. As leaders, we will be reminded of the importance of relationships as we lead through the situations that arise in our districts, and from this time in Chelan, take home new ideas on how to handle old and new situations.
I hope that your participation in this year’s conference helps you embrace the open doors that lie ahead. May you get what you need and want from our time together, and may you return home energized to address the opportunities before you.
Thank you for your service and leadership to our students—you are making a difference every day!
Sincerely,
RANDY RUSSELL, PH.D., Superintendent, Freeman SDChair, Superintendents Component, WASA

ESCORTING STUDENTS THROUGH OPEN DOORSTrudy will share the journey of how one district transformed from unintentionally participating in practices that marginalized students and their communities to being committed and successful in making the education of all students a common priority. Trudy will demonstrate how to bring the tools of cultural proficiency to action and application in schools and districts as we challenge ourselves to ensure that our actions reflect our values. Join this inspirational keynote session as we engage in a common vision to escort students and their communities through open doors.

EastBEYOND PRINCIPAL SUPERVISION, BUILDING A SYSTEM OF SUPPORT FOR PRINCIPAL SUCCESSSchool districts across the country are quickly revising the role of principal supervisor to reflect recent research indicating a need for a stronger focus on improving principal performance. While many districts are just beginning to make such changes, a number of others that have been leading this transformation are learning that there is more to supporting principals than just revising the role of their supervisors. This session will focus on what the University of Washington, Center for Educational Leadership is learning about creating systemwide support for principals. In particular, recent research regarding school leader expertise will be shared, leading to a deeper understanding of what principals need to be successful, how to enlist central office leaders to work differently, along with specific recommendations for action at home.

REDEFINING READY FOR THE 21ST CENTURYPreparing students for success beyond graduation is among the most important tasks facing America’s educators. They have responded with innovative determination, creating a relevant 21st century education that includes increased access to Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) courses, and early college credits that better position students for success; opportunities to complete industry credentials and college-level and career internships while still in high school; and rich exposure to co-curricular activities and community service projects that build skills for life.
