(Continued from page 1) Also this month is the DC Dental Society Charity Golf Tournament, being held on Wednesday, September 16th at the Bretton Woods Golf Course in Germantown, Maryland. Come out to enjoy a fun-filled day with friends and colleagues on the links. There will be drinks, food, and golf goodies for all participants! Registration for the event, although filling fast, is available via the DC Dental Society website. If you are unable to attend this year’s event, sponsorship opportunities are still available and donations are also being accepted. Proceeds from this year’s event will benefit the DCDS Foundation, the charitable and philanthropic arm of the Society. The ADA is still seeking members to volunteer at the ADA Annual Meeting in Washington DC this November. The success of the ADA Annual Meeting in part depends on the dedication of local volunteers. I urge you to consider committing a few hours during the meeting to volunteer. To learn more about the benefits of volunteering, available positions and to sign-up, please visit the DCDS website or contact Jennifer Bell, DCDS Operations Manager, at [email protected] or (202) 367-2483. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me or anyone on the Society’s board should you have any questions. We are DCDS: passionate about our profession, our community, and our future!

Sincerely, Julian Moiseiwitsch, B.D.S., Ph.D. President, DC Dental Society

Volunteers Still Needed for the 2015 ADA Annual Meeting The success of the ADA Annual Meeting depends on the dedication of outstanding volunteers - people just like you! To

volunteer, please visit the ADA website and use the group code CLAWDC. Learn more about who can volunteer, the

benefits of volunteering, and volunteering position descriptions. If you have any questions about volunteering, please

contact Jennifer Bell, DCDS Operations Manager, at [email protected] or (202) 367-2483.

Foundation Needs Members to Serve as Mentors Due to high demand, the DCDS Foundation is looking for additional members to volunteer their time and serve as

mentors to students from the Howard University College of Dentistry. The responsibilities of a mentor include

establishing regular communications with the student, delivering information on organized dentistry and the Society’s

activities, inviting and accompanying the student to DCDS meetings and activities, being a positive, ethical role model,

inviting the student to the mentor’s office to observe, reinforcing the importance of organized dentistry, and if possible,

inviting the student to at least one non-professional activity (home, club, social, recreational, sports, etc.) each year. Full

details about the program are available on the DCDS Foundation website. If you are interested in volunteering to be a

mentor, please contact the DC Dental Society office at (202) 367-1163 or via email at [email protected].

ADA Joins AMA Task Force to Reduce Opioid Abuse The ADA has joined the American Medical Association (AMA) Task Force to Reduce Opioid Abuse, and its first initiative is

to urge health care professionals to register for and use state-based prescription drug monitoring programs.

The task force is comprised of 27 physician organizations, 17 specialty and seven medical societies that are committed to

identifying and implementing the best practices to combat this public health crisis. The task force believes that when

prescription drug monitoring programs are fully funded, contain relevant clinical information and are available at the

point of care, they have been shown to be an effective tool to help health care providers identify patients who may be

misusing opioids.

More than 16,000 Americans died in 2013 from an overdose related to opioids; more than 8,000 died from one related

to heroin; and nearly 44,000 died as a result of an overdose involving a prescription drug, according to the task force.

"As health care professionals, we're on the front lines of this issue and see how it causes devastating destruction for

every life that it touches," said ADA President Maxine Feinberg. "Together, we can harness the collective power of

preventative education and intervention to help reverse this epidemic. The ADA stands firmly behind this task force."
