Annual Report 2019

Page 2: A Letter From Our Leaders

Dear Supporters,

Thank you for your tremendous generosity to 2Life Communities in 2019! Our ongoing promise is to provide our older adults the opportunity to live full lives of connection and purpose, and we do so by creating dynamic, supportive living environments with an emphasis and focus on affordability. 2Life is committed to our advocacy work, advancing the notion of aging in community as we expand our portfolio and become a growing and important part of many of the greater Boston area.

Beyond providing excellent housing, we actively innovate by advancing the integration of housing and healthcare, while pursuing outstanding design standards for senior housing that are adaptable for a lifetime.

Here are just some of the highlights of 2019:

In the spring, 21 of our residents fulfilled a lifelong dream when they became B’nei Mitzvah at Temple Emanuel in Newton.

We honored three generations of women from a remarkable family at our Raising the Roof event: Carol Goldberg, State Treasurer Deborah Goldberg, and Meredith Winter, with the inaugural L’dor Vador Award, celebrating their family’s commitment to public service and philanthropy.

In April, we opened the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg House on our Brighton campus, providing a home to 75 older adults and giving us a street presence on Chestnut Hill Avenue.

In September, we broke ground on the Harold and Ronald Brown Family House, a new building in Brookline, with our partners at Congregation Kehillath Israel.

Please enjoy this annual report, which will provide additional stories that exemplify our outstanding work at 2Life Communities.

With deep appreciation,

Donna Kalikow Amy Schectman Board Chair President and CEO

Raising the Roof 2019 Brunch

In October, more than 500 people gathered for our lively Raising the Roof brunch to celebrate and support 2Life Communities. Our Honorary Chair, Shira Goodman, welcomed the crowd, and the attendees were moved by the Hamotzi given by the 21 residents from our 2019 B’nei Mitzvah class. The inaugural L’Dor Vador award was presented to three generations of women from one outstanding family – Carol Goldberg, State Treasurer Deborah Goldberg, and Meredith Winter – to honor their commitment to community and public service. Guests enjoyed an animated conversation with special guest and social commentator Fran Lebowitz.

Brighton Campus Central Office Addition Breaks Ground! Construction began to build a new central office space on our Brighton Campus. This addition will create a new front entrance and consolidate all our “corporate” functions to facilitate inter-departmental collaboration and a sense of unity amongst central office staff to better support our residents. More importantly, it will free up space for resident-facing services, including more one-on-one private meeting rooms, common gathering areas, a redesigned art studio, and more. This project will officially meet Enterprise Green Communities certification criteria!

Groundbreaking on the Harold and Ronald Brown Family House On September 13th, a jubilant crowd of over 100 people, including Congressman Joe Kennedy III, Treasurer Deborah Goldberg, state and municipal officials, the Brown and Cassin families, Brookline Bank, and representatives from Congregation Kehillath Israel celebrated the groundbreaking of our newest 62-unit campus in Brookline’s Coolidge Corner named the Harold and Ronald Brown Family House.

Harry and Jeanette Weinberg House & Gitta and Saul Kurlat House Ribbon Cutting On July 18th in Brighton, 2Life had a fantastic afternoon at the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg House and the Gitta and Saul Kurlat House ribbon cutting. We were joined by hundreds of guests, including Governor Charlie Baker, Mayor Marty Walsh, and several State Cabinet Secretaries and Boston City Councilors. Together, the buildings provide 61 new and 209 refurbished units of affordable housing to low-income older adults, including those who are formerly chronically homeless and seniors with life-long developmental disabilities. We loved unveiling our beautiful new courtyard.

Golda Meir House Renovation In June, we celebrated the complete modernization of our 197-unit Golda Meir House in Newton with a ribbon cutting ceremony in the beautifully renovated courtyard. We were joined by Congressman Joe Kennedy III, Mayor Ruthanne Fuller, State Representative Kay Khan, MassHousing Executive Director Chrystal Kornegay and many community leaders. The Golda community gave high praise to the updated apartments and common areas, including the first floor dining room and fitness center.

Reverberations of Love Members of 2Life Communities made 1,300 Feelie Hearts for this spring’s outdoor community art exhibition with Studios Without Walls. Our sculpture, "The Reverberations of Love," was chosen as one of 20 works of art installed along Riverway Park in Brookline. Feelie Hearts are symbolic mementos of caring that 2Life residents, volunteers, and community members hand sew each year as part of our intergenerational programming.

Shillman House Play with Purpose Shillman House residents were introduced to a new ongoing program called ”Play with Purpose.” This program exposes residents to additional components of Fitness and Wellness, fine motor movement, and deeper cognitive stimulation. Each month, there was a different focus such as nutrition for National Nutrition Month.

Coleman House Intergenerational Program with Solomon Schechter Day School The Fall marked a new partnership between Coleman House and the Solomon Schechter Day School in Newton. Residents, students, and staff from both organizations quickly connected. This opportunity is part of our intergenerational programming. One student said, “Maybe our generations don’t talk because we are afraid of each other. But once you’re talking, you figure out how cool they are.”

B'nei Mitzvah Highlights

“I want to show my granddaughters that at any time in their life, no matter their age, if there’s something they want to accomplish, they can do it.” These are the inspiring words of Barbara, 76, a 2Life resident as she was working and studying hard for her Bat Mitzvah.

On Saturday, May 11th, at 3 PM, Barbara became one of 21 students ranging from 70 to 97 years old who celebrated their B’nei Mitzvah together at Temple Emanuel in Newton. Residents from four 2Life campuses participated, and it’s interesting to note that 20 of these students were women.

This Jewish B’nei Mitzvah ceremony marks the beginning of adulthood, and is usually celebrated at age 12 (for girls) or 13 (for boys). But girls in the United States have only regularly been included in the ritual since the 1960s, and many of our female students watched their brothers and sons celebrate this milestone but were excluded themselves.

Barbara and her classmates began studying for their B'nei Mitzvah in September 2018, guided

by rabbinic intern Giulia Fleishman of Hebrew College. We're grateful to the Rita J. and Stanley H. Kaplan Family Foundation, which generously funded Giulia's work with us for the second year in a row. She and the students spent several hours a week learning to read or chant their Hebrew parts, writing mini-sermons, even hand-making wine cups and prayer shawls to use during the service.

While Barbara kept her granddaughters in mind while she studied, each student was driven by very personal reasons for becoming a B’nai Mitzvah at this point in life. “One woman told me that after her husband passed, she was adrift. Joining this class anchored her, and helped her navigate her grief,” says Cindy Katzeff, then Director of Village Centers and Community Engagement, who came up with the idea of a group ceremony. “Another said that when she was younger, raising a family and running a household, spirituality wasn’t a priority for her. Now, it’s as though she’s found a door inside herself that she didn’t know existed, and she’s finding deep meaning and satisfaction in exploring this side of herself.”
