PREFACE

This innovatory law book aims to encourage student-centred involvement andalso to inspire a keen interest in the learning of Law at A- and AS-levels. Thecoverage of the law of England and Wales is sufficient for all GeneralCertificate of Education syllabuses, and may also be of interest to studentsstudying certain BTEC courses.

Thi s text makes a departure from the traditional law text, insofar as itmakes use of various integrated student activities aimed to reinforce learningof legal skills and to increase powers of critical analysis. The activities notonly include practice in writing ess ays and solving problem questions , butalso provide case study and workshop discussions designed to focus students'ideas on particular issues and to give students the opportunity to discuss legalproblems and matters concerning the legal system, thereby increasing theircritical and analytical powers in these areas. Because A-Ievel examiners arealways impressed by evidence of wider reading , students are also encouragedto undertake various research assignments in order to broaden their knowledge and perception of the law and the legal environment, and to develop anenquiring attitude towards the subject.

Care has been taken by the authors in designing student researchprogrammes, being aware that that many students in further educationcolleges and schools are unlikely to have the facilities of a law library wherereference to law reports can be made. Where students have been asked tofind specific cases or other legal resource material, this information is knownto be available in the majority of up-to-date law text books usually held incollege or school libraries or in public libraries.

We are indebted to the publishing team at Macmillan Press for theirguidance and ethusiastic encouragement at all times. To the best of our beliefthe law stated here is correct up to November 1994. Names mentioned in thecase studies are fictitious and resemblance to any person or private organisation is purely coincidental.
