Dear Preble High School families -

We have had quite a mild winter so far this year; actually I have heard people say this is more

like “our Wisconsin spring”. Well, I have noticed that folks are wearing short sleeve shirts,

shorts and even flip flops, but it definitely does not feel like spring to me. I hope my comments

are not premature, because while I am typing this note, I am seeing the beautiful snowfall

outside.

Second semester is well underway, and in some cases our students are settling into new classes

with new friends and our staff is getting to know a new group of students. Regardless of whether

you are in a yearlong class or a new second semester class, somehow a new semester signals a

fresh start. We encourage students to do their very best and work hard remaining focused on

completing the year on a positive note. We ask families to continue supporting your child on this

academic journey and to continue to support the efforts of our staff and the school.

As always, we want to share with you what is happening at school and communicate some

important pieces of information.

Student Tardies

We continue to work on encouraging our students to get to class on time. From our data below,

is it clear that many students are getting to first period late. There appears to be a decline in the

number of tardies in all other periods except 5th

period. In addition, further analysis and

disaggregation of some other data shows that our freshman class has the highest number of

tardies in first period. We could use families support to encourage your child to get to class on

time, as getting their late can negatively impact their learning and the learning of others.

Music on Fridays

As an incentive to reduce tardies, we are implementing a “music on Fridays” plan. This will be

shared with students, so ask your son or daughter for more details.

Student IDs

The expectation is that all students in the Green Bay Area Public Schools wear their student ID.

The focus is to ensure student safety at all times. At Preble, we have implemented this practice

as of the second semester. Please remind your student to wear their ID while on school grounds.

Brown County Health Department

The health department has partnered with our local water utility department to provide

information on how to decrease lead in the water we drink and use in our homes. Please be sure

to read the article that is on the school website.

Snowball Dance

We ask that families please remind your son or daughter to follow the school dance guidelines

that are posted on the back of their dance tickets. We want to ensure that all students have the

opportunity to enjoy themselves at the dance.

Thank you as always for your continued support and commitment to the success of student

learning and engagement at Preble High School.

Sincerely,

Natasha R. Rowell

2012-2013 SCHEDULING

In February, School counselors will begin scheduling students for 2012-2013 in the Computer Labs. Course

description booklets will be available on-line. Copies are available to families who do not have access to a

computer. It is very important that parents spend time reviewing the scheduling materials with their children

and sign the appropriate forms. Parents know their child best and are able to offer valuable advice. As a parent

of a high school student, you can be a motivating factor in your teenager’s career development process. During

high school, his or her career development activities will become more defined according to the post-secondary

plans he or she makes. It is important that you help your teenager balance the benefits of keeping their options

open as well as making specific plans for their educational and career future. Keep in mind; we have strict

guidelines to follow regarding the number of students needed to offer a course. Once registration is completed

classes may be dropped based on enrollment numbers.

(2012-2013 SCHEDULING Continued)

Once a student signs up for courses, they will not be able to drop their courses unless the building

principal determines there is good cause for a change. School board policy requires high school students

to schedule a minimum of SIX credits each year.

SENIORS: ARE YOU READY FOR COLLEGE?

Make sure that your college bound senior has followed through on the information that they received from the

colleges that they have been admitted to. Placement testing, orientation, enrollment deposits, and housing

deposits are all important details to take care of in a timely manner to ensure a smooth transition to college.

Many colleges request that students send them a copy of their final transcript before acceptance is given. To do

this, students need to sign a release of information through the Student Services Office.

SENIORS ATTENDING MINNESOTA STATE UNIVERSITIES

Seniors attending college at the University of Minnesota and other state colleges in Minnesota will need to go to

www.heab.state.wi.us to apply for Minnesota-Wisconsin Tuition Reciprocity. It is not automatically given

when students apply to Minnesota State Colleges.

BUILDING SCHOOL COMMUNITY

Did you know that…

Close to 25% of Preble students have been bullied in the past year?

Almost half of Preble students agree that bullying is a problem at Preble High School?

The Preble community takes bullying and harassment seriously, and wants all students to feel comfortable at

school. We are committed to ending bullying at Preble, and want students to feel safe enough to report bullying

whether it be targeted at them or another Preble student.

Preble has implemented several anti-bullying awareness and education events so far this year, and will continue

to do so until the end of the school year:

In September, School Social Workers went into 9th grade health classrooms to talk about bullying, and gather student ideas on how the Preble community can end bullying.

In November, Preble’s Safe and Supportive Schools (S3) team, along with several student groups, coordinated a bullying awareness event during National Bullying Awareness week. Courageous students and parents shared their stories about bullying with approximately 350 Preble students.

An anti-bullying student focus group has been formed and is central to all of the anti-bullying efforts.

In January, several staff members attended a cyber bullying workshop along with two students from the focus group.

In February, the It Happens Day will shine a light on bullying at Preble by involving the entire student body in an awareness event.

This spring or fall we hope to host a cyber bullying awareness event for students and parents to learn about the risks associated with social networking.

Preble’s Safe and Supportive Schools (S3) team in partnership with Preble administration and the GB Police department are working on developing an anonymous online reporting system as an avenue to report bullying behavior as it occurs.

If your son or daughter is being bullied at school, or if you know of a student who is being bullied, please talk

with a school social worker, school counselor, teacher, support staff, or administrator. Your information will be

kept confidential, and the student who is the target of bullying will get help!
