It’s finally spring! I’m amazed when I catch the kale and lettuce seeds I have planted peeking out of the soil, almost as amazed as I am when the CORV Guide comes together

every year at this time and is ready for print. It’s no accident our publication is released near Earth Day when spring is full of promise. This guide is about the promise of transitioning to a sustainable way of farming, eating, and cooperating, for consumers and growers.

Eaters of the region, take note. (And isn’t it great that we all eat.) There are lots of reasons to eat local and sustainably grown food and a variety of ways to do it. What better way to care for the Earth than to know your food and farmer and support sustainable agriculture? What better way to care for yourself than to eat nutritious, minimally processed food? And isn’t our health linked to the health of the Earth? By partaking of this guide, you are part of a movement away from an industrial food system towards something healthier, something more transparent and humane.

The local food movement provides hope in a time of obesity, genetically engineered crops, unsustainable big agriculture, and climate crisis. Wendell Berry, our neighbor in Henry County Kentucky, reminds us, “Be joyful though you have considered all the facts.” The facts may not yet be in our favor, but each of us can make a difference by “voting with our fork”.

I’m joyful to, once again, bring you this collaborative effort. Gratitude to all: from the growers of food, to the providers of markets and makers of special dishes, to our supporters, and to those who put these pages together. Thank you for taking time to join us.

Eat, Enjoy, Share, Deborah

The CORV crew minus a few

Our Local Food Shed . . .Is within a 50 mile radius from downtown Cincinnati and the Central Ohio River watershed. Although many use 100 miles as the boundary, we drew the line at 50 to make this project manageable. We include growers within a 100 mile radius who regularly sell within the 50 mile radius.

How Do You Know It’s Local?Ask your local growers to label what they grow. Read the label. Ask your Farmers’ Markets to have clear policies about labeling food products. Ask your Restaurants, Artisan/ Cottage producers, and Grocery Stores to label what is local (and the source). To know your food, know your farmer.

What’s Sustainably GrownSustainable growing practices are those which are likely to last for generations. And don’t we want our children’s children to thrive? Check out our list of growing practices on p.12; see what growers have indicated in their listings pp.13-18. We accept a range of growing practices in this guide to encourage a conversation about sustainable practices. Local does not equal sustainable. Let’s grow the conversation about sustainability.

• Freshness & Flavor

• Nutrition

• Good health

• Knowledge of growing practices

• Community connections

• Connection to the land

• Farmers’ working conditions & incomes

1. It makes it easy to find local food. You can find a grower, restaurant, or Farmers’ Market in the Central Ohio River Valley (CORV) and buy your favorite local food.

2. It is really local. It connects you to fresh, healthy food within 50 miles of Greater Cincinnati with listings, photos, a harvest guide, and articles.

3. It is accessible. We distribute 30,000 print guides in the Earth Day edition of CityBeat, have a really fun launch party, and put extra copies at various regional locations throughout the season.

4. Oh, did we say it was free to you? We have many volunteers, sell advertising, get sponsors and sometimes grants to produce this annual guide at no cost to the users.

5. It has a strong mission. “The CORV Local Foods Initiative” is a grassroots effort to connect local community members with local farmers, markets, producers, restaurants and fresh, healthy, local food. We aim to support self-sufficiency, sustainability, and the wise use of resources.”

6. It is colorful and user-friendly. Can we humbly say the most complete and beautiful annual directory of local food resources for our region. The guide is divided by topics with an easy to use index.

7. It is an important educational tool. Many use it as a resource for educational presentations and health fairs throughout the year to reach people who are new to these ideas.

8. This is our 7th edition. We have distributed over 150,000 copies in the last six years. People tend to keep their copies for a year.

9. It is also an online resource. The guide is available to view or download on the web, eatlocalcorv.org.

10. We help build community. By mapping resources of the region, we are helping increase understanding of and access to the local food movement as it continues to grow. It’s all about building a resilient food system.

FARMERS’ MARKETS come in many flavors for many needs, from shop and go, to community hubs. Take your bags, your change, and your curiosity. If you have time, take a friend and look around. Shop early to avoid the crowd or late to possibly get a deal. We encourage markets to have vendors label where their produce is from (especially if not from their own operation) and how it’s grown. This is about building relationships with each other and our food and land. (Check Growing Practices p. 12, Harvest Guide p. 12, and General Questions for Growers p. 13)

the kitchen at findlay market is an entrepreneurial solution to our community’s need to build a more resilient, robust food economy with the capacity to incubate and create food sector jobs. The Corporation for Findlay Market recently carried out a feasibility study for a shared use commercial kitchen at the market, an idea first proposed in 2000. The detailed study, carried out by Econsult Solutions, found that “a kitchen accelerator appears to be badly needed in Cincinnati, and could fill an important void in efforts to develop the local food economy and empower micro-entrepreneurs.”

The Kitchen at Findlay Market will provide a range of fea-tures and services:

• A Health Department licensed and designed place for small retail food related businesses needing part-time commercial space.

• A space to start or expand food related businesses with-out the huge expense involved in building and equipping a commercial kitchen, with commercial stoves, convection ovens, commercial mixers, refrigerators, freezers, storage shelves, and large stainless worktables.

• Short-term or long-term part-time usage—and private use during selected hours.

• A place to teach cooking classes, test recipes, make a product, do set-schedule catering etc.

• Early stage business development experts and resources available for consultation.

The Kitchen at Findlay Market will benefit our community and the market in numerous ways:

• Establish Findlay Market as a recognized and lasting community food hub while improving the viability of the neighborhood around Findlay Market.

• Create food products that celebrate what is unique and best about a community - it’s local crops, ethnic traditions and creative populace - while keeping a greater percent-age of food dollars circulating in the local economy.

• Develop a strong synergistic relationship between the kitchen and the existing market merchants and farmers in the Findlay Farmers Market.

• Provide new markets for local agricultural products

• Create employment opportunities that always accompany successful business start-up and growth.

Findlay Market already serves as a small business incubator through its creation of 18 businesses in the last 5 years. The Kitchen at Findlay Market is the next phase of supporting small business launch and growth at the market. It’s a delicious idea whose time has come!

the history of hops in america is woven into the early history of our country. Nearly every pioneer grew hops in their gardens even though production was always small. Beer consumption grew dur-ing the civil war and hop production kept pace. These hopyards blossomed in the Miami Valley as well as the Ohio counties of Lake, Ashtabula, Belmont and Fairfield. Just before World War I prohibition gained ground causing demand for hops to fall and as if on cue dis-ease decimated the re-maining crop. The skills of hop production were abandoned and then forgotten.

Today the craft brewing industry has exploded in Ohio. Influenced from the grow local movement brewers are seek-ing locally sourced hops for their new and exciting creations. February saw over 300 participants attend the hop growers work-shop at the OSU Research Center in Wooster. People from across the state are learning new ways of growing this exciting crop. One such farm Paradune, located at the highest point in Ohio, is beginning its second season. They have committed themselves to the returning tradition of local hops for local brewers. An artesian spring supplies the water for their 1.5 acres of select-ed hops as well as their new barley field. Fresh hops are just one aspect of hop production and Paradune has joined with Kickstarter to accomplish the drying and processing portion ensuring the availability of local hops through-out all the seasons. Paradune is growing, you can come and join them at Paradune.com and Facebook.

Key to Wineries listed Estate-Bottled Wines 100% of the wine came from grapes grown on land owned or controlled by the winery, which must be located in the same viticultural area (designated grape growing region) as the winery. The wine must also be produced and bottled at the winery.

ORV Wines are wines where at least 85% of the grapes are grown in the Ohio River Valley viticultural area (Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia) and produced and bottled locally.

Ohio or Kentucky Wines are wines that are at least 85% grown, produced and bottled in the same state as they were grown.

All wineries listed in the CORV guide are local (within 50 miles of Cincinnati) and have at least one product which is Estate-Bot-tled or made from ORV or Ohio or Kentucky grown grape.

A healthy growth of restaurants, eateries, and carry outs that source locally in season, from produce to meat and dairy products. Some even have their own gardens and beehives. It takes more time and effort to source locally, sometimes more money, but the results are worth it. They know and acknowledge their sources, and shouldn’t we all?

Here is a sampling:

Situated in a cafe space in Norwood, Ohio, Moriah Pie opens every Friday night, serving

homegrown, homemade pizza, sal-ad, soup, and pie to neighborhood residents. Robert and Erin Lockridge opened this unique cafe in October 2012 and take great pleasure in serv-ing food that grows in the soils of their West Norwood neighborhood. Robert starts his day early every Friday scrub-bing and chopping vegetables, rolling out pie crusts, seasoning sauces, and

assembling salads. The rest of the week the couple is busy in the gardens growing the food or in the kitchen preserving it.

Robert and Erin named their pizza parlor after Mount Moriah in the book of Genesis, the place Abraham calls “The Lord Will Provide” (Gen. 22:14). They limit their ingredients to

what they can grow or gather in their own neighborhood, not only because it is a fun culinary challenge but because they believe that this limitation opens their eyes and the eyes of their neighbors to see God’s loving provision through the soils, plants, and creatures of their place.

Moriah Pie does not have prices listed on the menu because the Lockridges do not want to out-price anyone, nor to under-value the food they have worked hard to grow. Instead, they encourage patrons to eat what they need, pay what they can, and trust that God, who has given food from the soil and so much more, will provide enough for all. Those who eat at Moriah Pie receive an envelope at the end of their meal for their contribution.

Moriah Pie, 1766 Mills Ave. in Norwood, Ohio Open Fridays, 5:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.

the food and agriculture organization of the united Nations reports the globe will need to produce 70% more food to feed 2 billion more people by 2050. In light of this mount-ing demand it requires growers and consumers to consider how we will produce sustainable and organic crops for more people on less land. An option which has been gathering attention over the past several years is urban agriculture and vertical farming. These strategies increase production levels per square foot over other traditional strategies. Vertical farming will NEVER replace field crops or organic gardens but it will hold a new place in the future mosaic of food production.

Waterfields LLC has begun exploring the future of food. We focus on producing crops which are appropriate for the urban and vertical context utilizing existing buildings while still holding on to our organic values. Through this strategy we are able to rejuvenate forgotten and abandoned places in the urban core to build sustainable and profitable businesses which create employment opportunities for folks from the community. Currently, Waterfields is selling its year-round crop of micro-greens to area restaurants, like Boca, Embers and Orchids at Palm Court, and small independent groceries like Madison’s in Findlay Market. Look for us on your plate!

since 1944, women have farmed Grailville. They used holistic and natural growing methods to uphold the dignity and importance of local agriculture as part of their core val-ues. Grailville offered programs from some of the great environme tal and sustainability thinkers of our time – Thomas Berry, a pioneer of religious environmentalism and Sister Mir-iam Therese MacGillis, founder of Genesis Farm.

In more recent years, Grailville was one of the first certified organic

farms in Ohio and created one of the first Constructed Wetland

Systems in Ohio to treat wastewater from four of our main build-ings. It worked with the US Department of Forestry to plant more than 2,000 trees on the property and put 20- plus acres of land into a conservation easement.

Today, Grailville’s certified organic produce is available for sale, on site, at our Milk & Honey House, and at the Loveland Farmer’s Market.

You can learn more about Grailville, including our experiential programs, at www.grailville.org.

{“The simple act of sowing a seed, saving a seed, planting a seed, harvesting a crop for a seed is bringing back this memory—this timeless memory of our one-ness with the Earth and the creative universe. There’s nothing that gives me greater joy than the work of protecting the diversity and the freedom of the seed.”

(B) Biodynamic : A unified approach to agriculture which tends the soil and the farm as living organisms, considers animals an integral part of a living ecosystem, and strives to bring community into farming. There is a certification process in order to use the biodynamic label.

(C) Conventional: How most farms have operated over the past 50-plus years. Commercial fertilizers and synthetic chemicals are probably used.

(CNG) Certified Naturally Grown: A grassroots, affordable certification program for farmers who sell locally and directly to customers. Its standards are based on the National Organic Program but uses peer to peer inspection instead.

(CRCC) Crop Rotation, Use of Cover Crop: Help hold the soil, renewed fertility, and reduce pests.

(FSC) Forest Stewardship Council: Practices that respect natural habitats by restricting the conversion of new forestla nd; prohibiting illegal harvesting, the use of hazardous pesticides or genetically modified trees; and supporting fair labor policies.

(IPM) Integrated Pest Management: Matches information with available pest-control methods to prevent unacceptable levels of pest damage while using the most economical means and causing the least possible hazard to people, property, and the environment.

(LS) Low-Spray: Chemicals are used sparingly.

(O) Certified Organic: The operation is certified by an United States Department of Agriculture accredited agency by a neutral third party professional inspector to meet national standards for raising produce or livestock in a way that does not harm the environment with synthetically derived inputs and that preserves or improves soil fertility, soil structure, and farm sustainability. Some people consider this the minimum for insuring sustainable growing practices.

(P) Permaculture: a design system for creating sustainable human environments which, for food production, begins with soil building and focuses on perennials.

(PF) Pesticide Free: No use of pesticides on seeds and plants throughout the crop lifecycle.

(SA) Soil Amendments, Such as Use of Compost and Non-synthetic Fertilizers: Build soil fertility.

(T) Transitional: Moving to organic.

ANIMALS AND THEIR TREATMENT:

(FR) Free Range: At a minimum, animals have access to an outside area.

(GF) Grass Fed: Animals are mainly raised on pasture instead of being confined in feed-lots and fed grain. Grass-finished animals are raised entirely on pasture and are fed stored hay and grass over the winter.

(HB) Heritage Breeds: Traditional breeds raised by farmers before industrial agriculture drastically reduced breed variety.

(HF) Hormone Free: Growth hormones are not used to force an animal to gain weight, increasing incidences of disease and leading to the routine prescription of antibiotics. (Hormones are not permitted in chicken production.)

(HR) Humanely Raised: Animal stress is limited through sufficient space, shelter, and gentle handling.

(NR) Naturally Raised: Animals cannot be given antibiotics, hormones, or animal by-products.

Available freshAvailable from storage, greenhouse, or hydroponically grow

Growing practices are important for healthy food and a healthy planet; they can also be confusing. Different terms are used. Some are regulated, and some are not. Asking questions and de-veloping a relationship with the grower and/or the market coor-dinator can help in understanding them. We support sustainable food production and realize understanding and practice continue to grow with education.

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a plan where shareholders pay an upfront fee to the farmer who, in return, provides a share of each week’s harvest during agreed upon times of the year. There are different types of CSAs in our region: work and no work shares with a choice of products and seasons.

so many people had come to me saying they wanted to start a garden at their home, but, year after year, they didn›t. When we dug deeper it seemed people didn›t have a vision for that patch of grass in their front or back yard. Starting with that desire, adding a “Barn-raising” model, and aiming at World War II style “Victory Gardens,” we mixed it all together to help neighbors grow their own food and flowers.

Grow It Forward Gardens is a decentralized community garden model developed by Price Hill Will, an organiza-tion promoting engagement, development, and revitaliza-tion in Price Hill. We work with community volunteers to help them design and build garden beds at their home, and, in exchange, the recipients agree to help three other people do the same. All of this is done for free; however, partici-pants are required to plan and purchase plants, which most people tend to find enjoyable.

This garden development model empowers people to grow some of their own food. It also gives them the «bug» for thinking about plants and potentially can engage a large segment of the Price Hill population as most everyone likes to play in the dirt. Finally, the participants share an experi-ence of transforming something formless and void into a place infused with beauty and meaning.

This «Barn-raising» approach allows some of the most tedious gardening work, starting a bed from scratch, to become a communal joy. Build days are a time to connect, get dirty, and have something to show for your time. Plant swaps, skill shares, and recipe trading are all natural side effects as neighbors get to know each other in their own yards. I will never again take an entire patch of grass and do the heavy lifting myself, not when it is so much fun to do it with others.
