Chapter 1 on the street

It was a cold day. The snow was

falling. There was only a dog on the

street.

It was a small, white, downy creature.

It had walked for many hours. It felt

tired, sleepy, and hungry.

The sky was dark. The street was

also empty and silent. Only the stars and

the streetlight were shining. The dog

stayed under the streetlight to get warm.

Then, it picked up some snow to swallow

because it was too hungry and too thirsty.

There was nothing to eat and nothing to

drink. It was waiting for something and

it fell asleep.

Abruptly, an old, brown car appeared.

The driver was a drunken man. He was

fifty years old. He was short and thin.

He has a beard on his chin. The man was

snaking violently. Everything in front of

him was fuzzy in his eyes.

Suddenly, he bumped into the

streetlight. There was a terribly scream.

The man eventually regained

consciousness. He got out of the car and

he saw the dog which just passed out.

“What did I do? I killed a dog?” the

man agitatedly said.

He tried to touch the dog slightly.

He was wondering if the dog was still

alive. However, he couldn’t feel any

heartbeat. He is upset. He violently

shook the dog. He knelt on the snowy

ground. He prayed that the dog would

survive.

“Please! Please! The dog is so

lovely and innocent. It’s not fair to let it

die. It’s my fault!” the man helplessly

cried.

Abruptly, a miracle appeared. The

dog was starting to breathe weakly. Its

heart was beating. Although he could

just feel the powerless breath, he smiled

and decided to take the dog to his house.

He wanted to take care of it.

The street was still silent and empty.

The snow was still falling. He softly

covered the dog’s body with a large

blanket. He put it into the car and started

the car. Nevertheless, the car didn’t

work. He gazed at the dog for few

minutes and held it in his arms. He

started to walk.

“Do not be afraid, my sweetie! You

will be better!” the man gently said.

At this cold night, only the shadow of

a man carrying a dog was slowly moving.

Chapter 2 the silent house

It was a small village. There were a

big farm, a long river, six small wooden

houses, tall trees, different kinds of

flowers, and a lot of small animals.

There were also some recreation

equipment, such as swings, seesaws,

slides, and sandboxes. It was just like a

huge, beautiful garden.

On the farm, there were three goats,

six pigs, three cows, and three horses. In

the river, there were fish, turtles, and frogs.

It was a wonderful paradise. Everyone

was happy living here. When adults

were working, children were playing in

the water or playing with the lovely

animals.

Some of the adults were working on

the farm, and the others who didn’t come

home very often were working downtown.

The man was also working downtown. It

was the third time he came home this year.

The night was silent. The man

carefully unlocked the door because he

was afraid to wake his neighbors.

Everyone was sleeping. The only

sound the man could hear was the sound

of cicadas.

The man’s house was small but warm.

The fire was burning. There were only

two floors in this small house. There

were a kitchen, a living room, a bathroom,

and a bedroom.

He softly put the dog on a soft pillow

near the fireplace in order to make the dog

warmer. He treated the dog’s wounds

with some herbal medicine. Sometimes,

the dog groaned. It was in pain.

The man cried. He really felt sorry

for his carelessness. He stayed beside

the dog. He did not dare to leave it

alone.

The man was exhausted due to the

fright for the unexpected accident and the

long distance from the street to his house.

The man little by little fell asleep on

his armchair. The dog also fell asleep.

Chapter 3 Merry Christmas!

It was the most important time of a

year. Christmas was coming. Everyone

was busy. They were working, shopping,

and decorating. Mothers were thinking

about some good ideas to make fabulous

dresses for their children. Children were

expecting.

The people in this village were not so

rich. They seldom have new clothes.

Therefore, they made the clothes by

themselves before Christmas. They

thought Christmas symbolized a new year

and new clothes were symbols of luck.

Mothers were also thinking about the

special, delicious Christmas dishes. The

men who were working downtown

definitely came home during the time of

Christmas. They always brought some

big, fat turkeys to their village.

Everyone was really excited about that.

Children made wishes and wrote all

their wishes on thick papers. They made

the strings get through their papers and

they hung the papers on the shining

Christmas tree. They wished their

dreams would come true one day.

There would be a party. This was

the most important festival of the year.

The dog was lovely and smart. It

didn’t bite people and never made noises

to disturb people. All the villagers liked

the dog very much. Children loved

playing with the dog and the dog was

really happy living with the people of the

village.

All the children in the village were

preparing a Snowmen Contest. They

practiced hard because they wanted to

receive the gifts which their parents put

under the Christmas tree.

They made many kinds of big, round

snowballs and found some accessories,

like buttons, scarves, waist belts, or gloves

to put on their snowmen. They always

felt proud for their own snowmen.

The small animals were also

excitedly running around the children.

All the villagers were laughing. Birds

were singing. It was a great time.

Chapter 4 on the mountain

One day, the man decided to camp on

the mountain. The weather was cold and

dry. The snow was still falling but not so

heavy. He took a tent, a kettle, solid

food, heavy jackets, and the dog. He

hiked a lot and the dog followed him

quietly.

When the man got to the top of the

mountain, he was amazed.

“What a wonderful view! It is just

like a painting!”

It was a place with a lot of memories

about the man’s family.

“I am going to tell you something,

my little doggy! I had a wife and a son

once. We had a great life downtown.

We loved to take a vacation on this

mountain. However, about three years

ago, they died in a fire. While the fire

was burning in my house, I was working

at my store. When I got the news, it was

too late. I lost them. I lost the two

people who are really important to me. I

was sorrowful. Therefore, although I

was working downtown, I still chose to

own a house in the village. The villagers

are so gentle. They make me think that I

am not alone. I have a lot of friends.

We are a big family. Now, you are also

one member of the family. I am so glad

to meet you!”

There were a large number of huge

trees, numerous and different kinds of

beautiful flowers, glossy, green grass,

happy singing birds, cute downy rabbits,

and a clean shadow river.

The man opened his arms and took a

big, deep breath. He felt really

comfortable. He fell back on the

meadow at ease. He immediately fell

asleep and had a short but sweet dream.

The dog was running and jumping happily.

It also fell back on the meadow with his

master. Both of them were extremely

joyful.

Suddenly, there were some terrible

sounds. The hunters were hunting. All

the animals were really scared. They

were all running. They didn’t know

what to do. Unfortunately, some of them

couldn’t successfully escape from the

bullets. They died.

Abruptly, the man heard a shrill but

familiar cry.

“Ah…”the dog which was hiding

beside a tree was screaming. It was shot.

The man was frightened and ran

rapidly to the dog.

“Oh, no! I hurt it again. It should

not happen.”

He swiftly plucked some herbs for

medicine and took the dog quickly down

the mountain.

Chapter 5 the dying dog

Two long days later, they finally

arrived in the village. The man was

nervous and fearful. He put the dog on

the soft pillow near the fireplace and

asked the neighbors to help him look after

the wounded dog.

“My dog was shot by a cruel hunter.

It is terribly in pain. I’m going to find

veterinarians downtown. Please help me

to take care of it! The dog is cold.

Please keep it beside the fireplace!”

The man left his house at once. He

borrowed a car from one of his neighbors.

The snow was falling heavily. It

was really hard to drive a car. About

twelve hours later, he finally arrived. He

nearly passed out because the weather was

too cold. Downtown, he asked every

doctor to go with him to the village.

However, none of them were willing to do

that.

“I am really sorry. It is too

dangerous to get out at this moment. Go

home quickly!” one of the doctors said.

“Who could help my dog?” the man

cried desperately.

After the neighbors knew what

difficulties the man faced downtown, they

were full of sorrow. They helped the

man take care of the dog, but they still

could not comfort him.

Thus, the neighbors took the man to

the church to pray for the dog.

They concentrated.

“My dear God! I am willing to die

instead of the dog. Please don’t take my

dog away!” the man called out sadly.

Everyone cried.

Chapter 6

There is no final meets

The dog’s breathing became slower

and slower. The man’s body also

became weaker and weaker. However,

the man still did not want to give up. He

continued going to different places where

he thought he could find the treatment.

“Since finding a doctor is not

possible, I need to find some medicine,”

the man talked to himself.

He started to read some heavy books

about medical science. He tried to make

the medicine by himself. Although he

studied very hard, he still could not

succeed.

“He slept extremely little. He wants

to save the dog, but he is already an old

man. He cannot be so tired. He might

be sick,” the neighbors worried.

“Just take a break!” one of his

neighbors said.

“No! I cannot rest. My dog is

waiting for me,” the man responded.

One month later, the man suddenly

ran out of the door and cried to the

villagers, “I am successful! Please come

to my house!”

The villagers were so surprised and

extremely happy to hear this great news.

In the man’s house, near the fireplace,

on the pillow, the man cured his dog and

stayed with it all the time. He wished he

would be the first person the dog saw

when it awoke.

All the people in the village were

waiting.

About two weeks later, the dog

eventually awoke.

“What a wonderful miracle! Thank

God!” one of the neighbors cried.

The dog slightly moved its body and

tried to open its eyes widely.

The dog started to murmur. It was

looking for his master.

Everyone began to cry. They petted

the dog to let it feel more comfortable.

The man had died just three days

before. He was sick because he had slept

too little and had eaten just little food.

He had become weaker and weaker. He

fell asleep with a smile beside the dog.

However, he never awoke again.

A month later, the dog had

completely recovered. It could run and

jump again. All the villagers looked

after it for the man. Although the man

had passed away, the villagers would still

remember all the great things he did for

his dear dog. They would miss him

forever.

“Just take a break!” one of his

neighbors said.

“No! I cannot rest. My dog

is waiting for me,” the man

responded.

One accident made a man connect

with an unknown dog. They met

each other when they were both
