Spring 2021

A Message from our Principal, Mrs. Leary

Aloha Red Raider ‘Ohana,

This past year has been a challenging one especially for students. We have had to make adjustments in the way we do things...the new normal. The health and safety measures of social distancing, mask wearing and diligence in hygiene is just one example. How about the social gathering limitations and the various transitions of the instructional models? The waiting to open up our economy, our schools, and the ability to sign up for a vaccine feels like forever. Your patience and flexibility in the waiting in school related decisions is greatly appreciated. At the school level, we understand and feel the same frustration and anxiety. We know in person learning is best for students. However, schools follow decisions and guidance which comes from federal, state, and/or local levels. There has been good news: 1) movement towards more in person learning, 2) allowance for limited in person graduation, and 3) transition to sports beginning with workouts. This is the results of all of us working together to follow health and safety guidelines.

Distance learning tips for families: We understand the challenges our Families have had trying to navigate through this school year. We wanted to share important information with you on how you can provide support for your children.

● Monitor how much time your child is spending online. ● Keep your children social, but set rules around their social media interactions. ● Encourage healthy, balanced use of technology. ● Monitor how much time your child is spending online. ● Keep your children social, but set rules around their social media interactions. ● Encourage healthy, balanced use of technology. ● Establish routines and expectations. ● Define the physical space for your child’s study. ● Monitor communications from your children’s teachers. ● Begin and end each day with a check-in. ● Take an active role in helping your children process their learning. ● Establish times for quiet and reflection. ● Encourage physical activity and/or exercise.Remain mindful of your child’s stress or worry

Create a Support Network for Unique Circumstances When HIDOE students are asked to engage in online learning due to circumstances that require school buildings

to close, the State recognizes that this can pose a hardship on many families. Although students may be restricted from going to school, there is no guarantee that parents and caregivers are able to work virtually from home and therefore be able to supervise their children. In the event a school building must close and we must

shift our learning from the classroom to online learning, HIDOE parents and caregivers are encouraged to think about ways they can support one another.

A message from our VP’s Joseph Hicks & Marissa Purcell Aloha Parents and Guardians,

Thank you for your continued support in helping to ensure we keep our school safe. We continue to work with our students on campus in safely engaging in social distancing and proper mask wearing. It is important to wash hands frequently and refrain from sharing food and snacks. To minimize potential exposure to the COVID-19 and other infections, we will no longer allow for food to be dropped off to students throughout the day. Students should bring food from home and/or purchase a meal from the cafeteria. We ask that families perform daily wellness checks before arriving on campus.

Check for Symptoms of Illness

If you/your child has any symptoms of illness - do not go to the school/office. Check for the following:

❏ Fever (a temperature of 100°F or higher) ❏ Muscle or body aches

❏ Chills ❏ New loss of taste or smell

❏ Cough ❏ Headache

❏ Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing ❏ Sore throat

❏ Fatigue (tiredness, weakness) ❏ Nausea or vomiting (stomach ache)

❏ Congestion or runny nose ❏ Diarrhea

If you/your child are in quarantine, live in the same household or have had close contact (within 6 feet for at least 15 minutes) with someone with COVID-19, or are waiting for COVID-19 test results - do not go to the school/office until quarantine is completed or you are cleared by a health care provider. Please notify your child's Vice Principal:

These are the minimum requirements to return to school should the student experience any symptoms. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact your Vice Principal.
