Upcoming events include a Wine and Cheese at the Alberta Legislature co-hosted by Edmonton Jewish Federation, CIJA and CJPAC, and a screening, with the Beth Tzedec Film Festival and the Association for German Education in Calgary of the film “Germans and Jews,” an exploration of the troubled relationships between the two peoples.

• Inclusion – The Kesher program continues with enthusiasm and planning is underway for an even bigger and better JDAIM (Jewish Disability Awareness and Inclusion Month) in February. Also watch for a co-sponsored film at the Beth Tzedec Film Festival of “My Hero Brother” the moving story of Down Syndrome people and their siblings who go on a trek in Nepal.

Jewish Calgary certainly is vibrant and this time of year is exciting! I would like to personally invite each of you to engage in all that we have to offer as a community, and to join me in supporting these efforts and more through the UJA Campaign. We have accomplished much, but have a long way to go toward ensuring many important services and programs can continue to be provided. As Hillel said: If I am not for myself, who will be? If I am only for myself, what am I? If not now, when?

We have just passed through one of the busiest times on the Jewish calendar; Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Shemini Atzeret, and

Simchat Torah all come and go very quickly in a three week period in the fall. Concurrent to these meaningful and fun (at least for me) special Jewish Days, we also just passed the midway point of our community’s 100 Days of Impact, the key focus of this year’s UJA Campaign.

As Jews, we often like to pause, take stock, and either celebrate our achievements or, if we feel we are off our mark, reset our efforts to get back on track. As such, I am pleased to pause at the midpoint of our 100 Days of Impact to share with you a few campaign details, and some equally important programming and service achievements in this early part of our year.

“100 Days of Impact” – UJA Campaign

In the last month and a half we have raised close to $1.5 million dollars (almost half our campaign goal), held our Amazing Race Hashanah launch event for over 100 participants, our Major Contributors’ Dinner featuring Professor Gil Troy and Israeli Ambassador Rafi Barak for over 70 attendees, and hosted a beautiful evening for our Lions of Judah featuring Julia Reitman, JFC-UIA National Chair, and Linda Kislowicz, JFC-UIA National CEO, which attracted close to 40 Lions (women who contribute $5,000 or more annually.)

We have also had 10 cell-a-thons during which committed volunteers called donors, sharing information about the impact Federation and its funded agency partners make in the community, and helping to secure support for this year’s campaign. Many people have been generous in these first couple of months. If you’ve not yet made your gift and you value all that Jewish Calgary has to offer, please consider making a meaningful contribution to ensure we remain proud, vibrant, and effective.

Engagement and Outreach Programs

Many people in our community still might not realize that Calgary Jewish Federation conducts direct programming and services, and doesn’t only raise funds. Over the last few weeks alone, a number of wonderful and meaningful initiatives have taken place.

• PJ Library - We ran a PJ Chag Sameach program for Rosh Hashanah, which attracted over 40 children and their parents and grandparents to share in singing, craft-making, and celebrating. This event was followed by our signature partnered event with Beth Tzedec, Smoothies in the Sukkah, which attracted over 80 children (and 120 people) to celebrate Sukkot, hear stories, make a craft sukkah, and meet new friends. Currently, over 500 children in Calgary are receiving PJ Library books at home, and many of these children also engage in our fabulous programs! If you know someone who is 6 months to 8 years old and is not receiving PJ Library, please be in touch with Kathie (kwainer@jewishcalgary.org) for more information.

• Holocaust Commemoration and Education - We hosted a sold-out advance screening of the movie “Denial” (nearly 200 attendees) complete with a brief presentation about the Holocaust and Human Rights Education programs Federation offers. Plans are underway for our community Kristallnacht commemoration; a Holocaust play with music, Sarah’s Voice, in January; a teachers’ conference in February, and Hana’s Suitcase with Storybook Theatre in April. All this in addition to our usual programming for Yom HaShoah, the Holocaust Education Symposium and more.

• Community Relations - Unfortunately, our Community Relations committee has been engaged in several issues of concern, including the suspension of University of Lethbridge Professor Anthony Hall, the Green Party’s BDS resolution, and an incident at Henry Wise Wood School. Recently Calgary Jewish Federation had the opportunity to offer a pre-screening of the film Denial, which told the story of historian Deborah Lipstadt’s battle against

high-profile Holocaust denier, David Irving.

Here in Calgary we had our own version of David Irving - Jim Keegstra of Eckville, Alberta. A High School teacher and the town mayor, this deranged educator taught hundreds of

impressionable young people that Jews are evil, that we own the media, that our goal is world domination, and that the Holocaust didn’t happen.

Our Holocaust Survivors in Calgary felt they had no choice but to counter the lies by telling the truth to Calgary students, risking their hearts and minds every time they relived their appalling experiences.

Over 30 years later, we are proud to report that through Calgary Jewish Federation’s Holocaust Education programs, well over 75,000 young people in and around Calgary have heard the truth, and gained an understanding of how easily intolerance can lead to atrocity. As we’ve seen recently at the University of Lethbridge and elsewhere, Holocaust denial and antisemitism continue to this day. Calgary Jewish Federation is dedicated to ensuring that our community continues to remember, to teach, to inspire, to tell the truth and to continue our Survivors’ legacies.

Through programs like the March of the Living, our Holocaust Education Symposium with Mount Royal University, our Washington program, our Asper trip to the Canadian Museum of Human Rights, our in-school education program, and our commemoration ceremonies like Yom HaShoah and Kristallnacht, we continue to tell our story.

We have new initiatives such as our 2nd Voices project which allows children and grandchildren of Survivors to tell their parents’ and grandparents’ stories. In 2017 we will

host our first Holocaust Educators’ Conference, and cultural events like Sarah’s Voice in January and Hana’s Suitcase in the spring.

All this happens in our community because of people like you. Your donations to Calgary Jewish Federation’s UJA campaign are what make

Director of Holocaust Remembrance and Human Rights Education, Calgary Jewish Federation

Brianna knew that the Holocaust was the greatest human rights tragedy in history but she didn’t learn much about it in school. “It was almost like

nobody wanted to talk about it” she says.

Brianna wanted to know more, she wanted to understand how the Holocaust happened and how such atrocities can be prevented. Through a friend, she found

out that Calgary Jewish Federation offered the Asper Foundation Human Rights and Holocaust Studies Program. Brianna signed up and soon found the perspective on the

Holocaust she sought.

“It was refreshing to be among a bunch of kids who really care,” she said. Brianna and many of her peers expressed the feeling that the Asper program had a huge

impact on their lives, making them more likely to stand up to injustice and speak out against human rights abuses. One

student announced that the program influenced his determination to become a human-rights lawyer.

The Asper program is but one of Calgary Jewish Federation’s many Holocaust

Commemoration and Education programs funded by generous donations to the annual UJA Campaign. With your support, Federation teaches thousands of students each year about the danger of intolerance and the importance of protecting human rights,

democracy and respect for diversity.

September 25th was a beautiful day for a race, in this case the Amazing Race Hashana!

Participants challenged themselves in every way – their art skills, singing, multiple sports, games, group cooperation challenges, and photo posing with costumes, as well as the ever-popular military-style physical drills

with former IDF soldier Daniel Birnbaum.

Finishers were greeted with cheers and a beautiful snack table – everyone was a winner!
