A MESSAGE FROM DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

BOO CORRIGAN

ODIA MISSIONTo provide an extraordinary Division I athletic experience that develops leaders of character committed to the values of Duty, Honor, Country.

ODIA GOALS• Recruit and develop scholar-athletes who lead the Corps• Compete and win at the highest level• Beat Navy and Air Force• Provide the resources (personnel, funding, and facilities) to support athletic excellence• Be a positive strategic communicator for ODIA, USMA, and the Army• Adhere to department of the Army, NCAA, conference, and Academy rules, regulations, and policies• Affect changes in legislation, policy, and regulations that improve performance

Dear Friends,

It is my distinct honor to present this year’s annual report which documents our many success stories from the 2016-17 season. It was another great year as our cadets, coaches and staff proved their commitment to winning the right way and competing at the highest level while pursuing our mission of developing leaders of character that are committed to the values of Duty, Honor, Country.

As a program, we celebrated three teams that earned conference regular season or tournament titles, one team that advanced to the NCAA Championships and 11 individuals who qualified for NCAA competition. Our cadets continued to prove they can be competitive with their peers while also excelling in the unique academic and military requirements at West Point.

During the 2016-17 year, the Black Knights raised the bar yet again with a .585 winning percentage, which surpassed last year’s record-breaking mark. The Black Knights’ 292 wins surpassed last year’s mark of 288 and is the highest of the 21st century and equals the mark set in the 1990-91 year. The Class of 2017 topped last year’s seniors with a .563 winning percentage, the highest of this century.

For the first time since the 2013-14 season and 11th time overall, Army claimed the 2016-17 Patriot League Presidents’ Cup on the men’s side edging out service-academy rival Navy by 2.25 points. The spring was an impressive time for the Black Knights with men’s tennis capturing their 13th Patriot League Title and men’s golf star Peter Kim setting a league record en route to being crowned the Most Outstanding Golfer. Men’s lacrosse and women’s tennis also continued to rise by capturing regular-season Patriot League Championships.

The Army West Point Athletic Association was formed this past year. We welcomed the transition into a 501(c)3 non-profit organization on March 1, 2017 to gain flexibility and autonomy for the department. The mission is “to provide an extraordinary Division I athletic experience that develops leaders of character committed to the values of Duty, Honor, Country.” The goals are to recruit and develop scholar-athletes who lead the Corps of Cadets, while competing and winning at the highest level and adhering to the department of the Army, NCAA conference, and Academy rules, regulations, and policies.

We also had another great season in the classroom. Three of our cadet-athletes captured their conference’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year honor, while volleyball libero Megan Bryn and men’s basketball foward Mac Hoffman represented Army West Point on Academic All-America teams.

Our coaches were also recognized for their leadership ability. Head swimming and diving coach Mickey Wender was selected as the Patriot League Coach of the Year this winter as were his colleagues Jim Poling of men’s tennis and Jim Foster of baseball this past spring.

The A Club, for the sixth consecutive year, set a record for donations. We thank all of our donors who continue to answer the call when we ask. Your commitment allows our cadet-athletes to focus on their goals.

To find out more about the Army West Point A Club and how you can enhance the cadet-athlete experience, visit GoArmyWestPoint.com/aclub, call (845) 938-2322, or email [email protected]. Thank you again for all of your support of Army West Point Athletics.

ARMy ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION AWARDSPRESTIGIOuS AAA AWARDS PRESENTED AT CONVOCATION

Army West Point golf standout Peter Kim and softball star Alee Rashenskas were honored with the United States Military Academy’s most prestigious athletic honor as they were present-ed with the Army Athletic Association Award at the Awards Convocation in Eisenhower Hall. Also receiving honors at the Awards Con-vocation were Andrew King of football and vol-leyball’s Olivia Fairfield, who earned the AAA Special Award. The AAA trophy is awarded annually to the male and female cadet-athletes who display the “most valuable service to intercollegiate athlet-ics during a career as a cadet.” This year marks the 113th anniversary of the AAA Award, which was first presented to football’s Horatio Hackett in 1904. Kim becomes the first golfer to win the award, while Rashenskas is the seventh softball player to earn the honor and first from the pro-gram since Nicki Robbins in 2002. Kim, a team captain, had a decorated career for the Black Knights with three NCAA appear-ances, including two as an individual. He won two individual Patriot League Championships, as a rookie and senior, while qualifying as a member of the 2016 Patriot League Champi-on golf team. He was a three-time All-Patriot League First Team selection and a second team selection in 2015. The Metuchen, N.J., native was a two-time Golf Coaches Association of America PING All-Region pick. He was named the Patriot League’s Golfer of the Year twice and was the Rookie of the Year in 2014. He was only the second player in Patriot League golf history to capture two major awards in the same season and the sole athlete to garner rookie and player of the year in the same season. Kim was one of only two players to make the Patriot League 25th Anni-versary Team as an active student-athlete. Kim, a Leader Development Science major, was on fire at the 2017 Patriot League Cham-pionships at Bucknell, shooting 10-under par through three rounds, including a league and course record 63 (-7) in round two. He won the individual title by four strokes and shot under par on each day. Rashenskas was a two-time team captain for the Black Knights on the diamond and is only the ninth player in program history to earn that distinction. She has been a four-year starter at second base for Army and did not miss a game her entire career. The Law and Legal Studies major was named

to the All-Patriot League First Team twice and had a career batting average of .329 and posted 25 doubles and 96 runs batted in. She became the seventh member of Army’s 200 hit club and finished with 223 hits in her career. Rashenskas had 73 of those in 2016, which ranks tied for the sixth most in Patriot League history. The Kankakee, Ill., native is in the Army top 10 in games played, at bats, hits, runs scored, RBI, stolen bases and total bases. She is the all-time leader in walks with 84. She was named to the 2014 and 2016 National Collegiate Fast-pitch Association All-Region Third Team. Unlike the annual AAA Award, the AAA Spe-cial Award is given only in years when a worthy candidate is deemed. A cadet-athlete earns the honor for “exhibiting outstanding achievement and exemplary leadership in athletic competi-tion.” King and Fairfield are the 29th and 30th ath-letes to receive this honor and first since 2010. King was a three-year starter at middle linebacker for the football team and as senior earned the Defender of the Nation Award, which is given out by the Charlotte Touchdown Club. He was also a semifinalist for the Lott IM-PACT Trophy Award. The Queen’s Village, N.Y., native was one of two team captains for Army and led the team to its first win over Navy since 2001 and its first bowl victory since 2010. The Black Knights cap-tured both milestones in a season for the first time since 1984. King, a Law and Legal Studies major, ranks second all-time in quarterback sacks with 14.5 and fifth in tackles for loss with 35.5. He record-ed a total of 255 tackles and 172 tackle for loss yards. Fairfield was a two-year team captain for the volleyball program, and was also the leader of the Corps Squad captains as the Student-Ath-lete Advisory Council Representative during her senior campaign. After changing her position to middle block-er for her senior season for the betterment of the team, Fairfield garnered second team All-Patriot League honors this past fall and was named to the 2016 Patriot League All-Tourna-ment team. The Iowa City, Iowa, native was the league’s 2013 Rookie of the Year and second team dis-tinction. Fairfield finished her career with 23 double-digit kill performances.

ARMy ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME

Army West Point Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Boo Corrigan has announced the 13th induction class into the Army Sports Hall of Fame today.

The Class of 2016 features wrestling coach Leroy Alitz, football star Tommy Bell, gridiron and men’s basketball extraordinaire Townsend Clarke, men’s and women’s swimming letterwinners Anthony Clay and Colleen Criscillo, men’s cross country and track field star John Hammack, football standout Ken Johnson, golf’s first hall-of-famer Steve Pembrook and boxing great Joe Remus, comprise the Class of 2016.

The Army Sports Hall of Fame is a subset of the Kenna Hall of Army Sports, a comprehensive museum displaying Army’s rich and proud intercollegiate athletic program. It is located on the third floor of the Kimsey Athletic Center, Army’s state-of-the-art football training facility.

The announcement of the Army Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2016 marks the end of a lengthy process that began in the spring. A selection committee, representing athletic administrators, academic administrators, former West Point athletes, graduates and representatives from the Association of Graduates, began the process of developing a workable list from the thousands of athletes, coaches and administrators that have represented the Academy on the “fields of friendly strife.” Only individuals that graduated from or coached at the Academy and those 15 years removed from their playing and coaching days are eligible. The Hall of Fame Selection Committee voted and approved the change from five years removed to 15 last year.

Once the selection committee finalized its recommended list, the names were forwarded to West Point’s Athletic Committee for review and ratification before being passed on to Superintendent Lt. Gen. Robert Caslen for final approval. The 13th induction class into the Army Sports Hall of Fame brings the total number of inductees to 127.
