A MESSAGE FROM OUR MAIN SPONSORS - FROSTS

Another year goes roaring by as we once again reach the start line for the 2004Brighton Speed Trials. It is nearly 100 years since the event was first staged. But

judging by the numbers of spectators who have been flocking here in recent years,

this nationally renouned spectacle is more popular than ever.

Frosts haven't been around quite as long as the Speed Trials. But we have been goingstrong for over 50 years and been frontline supporters of the Speed Trials for over a

decade. Today, Frosts is the largest privately owned car retailer in the south ofEngland and we're still expanding.

In the last few weeks we have launched our latest Vauxhall dealership - our fourth intotal - at Ferring Road, Worthing. We now have responsibility for over 25,000 Vauxhallcars and vans serving a customer base from east of Seaford to west of Littlehampton

as well as much of central Sussex.

Our van division has come on leaps and bounds over the last couple of year and thissummer we have also opened a dedicated van centre next to our existing dealershipat Denton Corner, Newhaven.

Don't forget, this September sees the latest new car registration plate change. And at

Frosts there's no shortage of choice. As main Vauxhall, Jaguar, Lotus, Chrysler, Jeep

and SEAT dealers, we pride ourselves on selling cars that suit all lifestyles and agegroups. There's something for everyone at Frosts. Throughout all our showrooms, ourfriendly and knowledgeable sales staff we'll be happy to talk to you.

Alternatively, our award winning web site www.frosts4cars.co.uk provides an

unprecedented opportunity to source our comprehensive choice of used cars. People

come from far and wide to buy cars from us such is the pulling power of the internet. One customer recently drove all the way from the Isle of Man and back (a round tripof over 500 miles and a sea crossing) to take delivery of a Movano van. So you don'tneed to live locally to get a great deal at Frosts.

Like the Speed Trials, our aim is to appeal to as wide an audience as possible.

We are proud to once again give support to the oldest event of its kind in the motoringcalendar. To competitors and spectators alike we hope you have a safe and

exhilarating day at the 2004 Speed Trials.

Message from the Mayorof the city of Brighton & Hove

Councillor Pat Drake

I am delighted to extend a warm welcome to both spectators and competitiors to

Brighton & Hove for the 68th National Speed Trials. Every year, this very popular

event brings excitement and spectacle to the City. Competition is fierce, and it is

a pleasure to see so many competitiors in such a wide range of cars.

May I take this opportunity to thank the sponsors, Frosts Cars Limited, for their

continued support, and Brighton & Hove Motor Club for all the hard work, energy

and enthusiasm put into providing us a" with such an exciting event - a major

attraction for residents and visitors alike.

I hope you will all have an enjoyable and successful day and also find the time to

visit some of our local attractions, such as the Royal Pavilion, The Lanes and, of

course, our wonderful seafront.

Brighton Speed TrialsThe Brighton and Have Motor Club, with grateful acknowledgements to our sponsors FrostCars Umited, and to Brighton and Have City Council for their valued co-operation presentThe Frosts Brighton National Speed Trials, 2004.

Records are not achieved by driver alone - the machine counts too. The driver's abilitycoupled with obtaining the highest efficiency from the vehicle, each contributing a share insuch achievements. The extra horsepower, the stopping power and the countless andinvaluable mechanical and electronic components which when combined enable them toget that last ounce of performance from their cars, just where and when required areessential to success and today we will see these achievements hopefully come to fruitition.

Members of the Brighton and Have Motor Club perform their duties and responsibilitiestirelessly year after year to make this event a success. Our reward is prior to the eventbeginning, to pause for a moment to take in the quite awe inspiring spectacle of so manyspectators: fans, enthusiasts, and visitors, looking down from the Madeira Drive terraces;some of whom have travelled great distances to be yet again at their favourite South Coastmotor event. For us that is truly a great return for our many weeks of preparation.

These events could not be possible were it not for the dedicated interest andencouragement so freely given by our immediate sponsors, Frost Cars Limited.

Wewish all our supporters a worthwhile meeting and a safe return home.

In support of its most local motorsport event - the annual historic Brighton SpeedTrials - Ricardo is offering a cash prize and trophy to the competitor who in thejudges' opinion has applied the most innovative technology to the preparation oftheir vehicle.

VINTAGE AND HISTORIC RACINGThe Vintage and Historic Class has again produced an exciting entry with a wide selection of cars thathave made motor racing history during the pre-war thirties and again on the post-war scene.

Andrew Day in his very successful 3/8 litre supercharged Bentley will challenge for a win. Robin Baker inhis superb 24 litre Hispano engined Delage, John Peskett in the J2 Allard with a 6.4 litre Cadillac engineand long time Brighton Entrant Bob Burrell with the mighty V12 supercharged Bentley will all provideserious and powerful competition.

Peter Vernon-Kell in his elegant Zagato bodied Maserati, the Jaguar XK140 of Stewart Couch and SteveGray in his evocative AC Ace will add interest to the day.

As is a tradition at Brighton we have a race within a race. The VSCC Handicap. The eligible cars havehandicap times set by the Vintage Sports Car Club who tend to know the score pretty well.

This year the Handicap is a lottery. Could one of the powerful Bentleys make the day a win? Perhaps oneof the small Austins or Peter Stevens 1929 Dry Lakes Special will deliver the goods.

With a Handicap everyone is in with a chance and a sporting surprise win is always on the cards.

BRIGHTON SPEED TRIALS 2004 - The Motor CyclesI swore a couple of years back that I would retire from being involved, some hopes of that! The disease stills holdsme in its grip. To keep peace within the family I have stepped aside from most of my involvement - but for Brighton,as said, the disease stili holds sway. Next year if we can really believe it a hundred years will have passed manybeyond our ken, but most of us have our more recent memories of this great old and wonderful event, which stillholds such an attraction for us ali. For many who take the active part in the play where there are only a couple ofbrief times to achieve, are in their eyes only times within the greater programme over the years, for them the racenever stops until life's race is done. This is represented this year by the loss of one of our sports greatestgentlemen, Alan Morgan. His presence will be greatly missed, but in the true tradition, his old vintage Rudges willstill be campaigned by his son Richard.

During the preparation of the event the toughest and hardest job has to be for the entries secretary when lookingthrough the usual heavily oversubscribed entry list. Who to include? Past performance record? Question afterquestion, trying to be fair and just to all requirements and then the really hard job the refusals to those who are sokeen to enter. How many "Wild Cards" can one handle, the foreign rider whose performance record is unknown towe at home here, if they are that enthusiastic to be prepared to travel hundreds of miles to race a total of threequarters of a mile just to be a part of this annual and historic event in the South of this old country, then surely thatalone should open the door. So welcome to newcomer from Austria Manfred Rauscher and his team who haveovercome tremendous bureaucratic hurdles to join with us and a thank you to our Auto Cycle Union for smoothingthe path for Manfred, also welcome again to Mike Hueby from Germany whose "NOSferatu" is no mean performer.

For those of you who will take a stroll through the very busy paddock you will see the modern devices up on theirstands being often down loaded into the adjacent computer which will guide the pit crew chief as to which item willneed to be "Tweaked" to squeeze that minute extra of power, that might make the difference over their nearest rival. All this very different to the old style "Vintagents" who will be studying spark plugs to see if the mixture is bang on,that the tyre pressures are right for he conditions. All very different, but to the same purpose, to beat their pal in

Finally thanks to all our readers, about and around in the paddock, up there on the "Shelf" cheering the lads andlassies on, thank you all, enjoy the day on the seafront and have a safe journey home with all the memories.

the next pit, to chip off another hundredth of a second from last years best. For the up to date machine variousitems have been installed to get an "Edge", often at horrendous cost in these days of electronics. For the vintagegroup there are very few "Spares" to be had so what breaks or wears out has to be re-created, sometime a long andprotracted process. What is it that drives people to such folly? Simply the answer has to be "Fun" and theenjoyment of it with ones fellows, plus the sense of achievement that comes from a small improvement. All underthe banner of "Sportsmanship" (Read: Fellowship).

Our thanks must go of course to the Brighton and Hove Motor Ctub for their continuing support and invitations, especially to Tony Johnstone who keeps the pressure up on all of us, to the City of Brighton for their continuingsupport and never forget Frosts for their solid back up and not least but all Important to the Marshals, Start linecrews, and unseen but always present the myriad helpers, the Ladies. All those who throughout the year press onpreparing the reams of paperwork, the drudgery that always has to be properly in place before as much as a"Moped" can be started up.
