An exciting week for Outrigger Laguna Phucket Beach Resort as assistant financial officer Thip (Nannicha Tantipipiyakul) and her husband Tor (Phumkit Soporn) welcomed their healthy baby, Chanuntach Soporn, Sept. 22, at 1:22 a.m., weighing 5.3 pounds.

Congratulations from your Outrigger family!

A life-long student, Barry believes we all can continue to learn and develop skills to accept new responsibilities. He worked to ensure his teams had the resources and knowledge to achieve the level of excellence demanded in today’s marketplace and he sought out individuals to help generate new thinking and ideas. Operations has a laser focus on cost savings and streamlining, and Barry had to make some uncomfortable but necessary decisions over the years to improve our operational and customer focus. Admittedly not his favorite part of the job, Barry handled these difficult decisions with a genuine concern and thoughtful communication. Barry’s vision, knowledge and integrity led our operations through both calm and choppy waters, always with the goal of kina‘ole (flawlessness) and for Outrigger to be competitive wherever our flag was flown. Barry has been committed to our owners, partners, hosts and guests for 21 years and now it’s time for him to commit to himself! He is looking forward to traveling, spending time visiting his son Drew and adventures as a family. Barry says the best part of working for Outrigger is its people, and he will miss his Outrigger ‘ohana but trusts that paths will cross as he and Nancy continue to call Hawai‘i home. A hui hou, Barry, and thank you for all your contributions to Outrigger.

with Joy Advincula, purchasing clerk at Outrigger Guam Beach Resort

What type of exercise do you enjoy doing and why? I enjoy running and strength training with my husband. These activites keep my body and mind strong and healthy. At my age, any type of exercise helps keep the aches and pains to a minimum. How often do you exercise?  I run 4-6 miles, 3 times a week and strength train at the gym around 5 times a week.

Do you eat healthy/clean? I basically eat what I want, but I always add a variety of vegetables to my meals. I also drink a lot of water to keep hydrated.

What indulgence do you allow yourself every now and then? There are times I eat foods with a lot of sugar in it, like ice cream and chocolates because my body craves it.

What benefits have you enjoyed from your efforts in exercise and nutrition? The benefits I enjoy from doing exercise include feeling good physically and mentally. I also have a lot of endurance which I need to keep up with my active family. Eating a lot of fruits and veggies also keeps me at a healthy weight.

What “secret” would you like to share with the Outrigger ‘ohana? Once you start on any type of exercise, whether a beginner or advanced, stay with it and make it a part of your life. Anyone can do this, they just need to make the decision to start. You will reap the rewards in the long run!

How do you “de-stress?”  Exercise itself is a huge de-stressor. You pour all your energy into the workout and when you are done, the built-up stress is released.

Do you have any past “moments of glory” you’d like to share?Every year I represent Outrigger Guam Beach Resort at the Guam Ko’ko’ Ekiden Relay Race. Running across the finish line is always a moment of glory. [Joy usually finishes first in her age category and often beats out the best times in other categories as well. - Clarissa Sacla]

A Signature Experience for UH athletics and coachesBy Kathy Hansberry and Gay Shinbara

A breathtaking ocean view at the Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort’s Suite 123 served as backdrop for the 2nd annual UH Mahalo Reception on Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2016. Attended by about 50 coaches and members of the University of Hawai‘i’s athletics department, our special guests experienced Outrigger’s new Signature Experience welcome amenity, a glass of tropical juice and a refreshing cold towel, before being escorted to a guest room for a FAM (familiarization) tour. Castaway Island Fiji guests can now claim to have played rugby with an Olympic gold medallist following a surprise visit by Fiji’s national hero, Osea Kolinisau. Oseo captained Fiji in its historic win in the finals of the Rugby Sevens competition in Rio de Janeiro, bringing home Fiji’s first ever Gold Medal from a Summer Olympics. He also captained Fiji to victory in the 2014-2015 and 2015- 2016 Sevens World Series and scored more points than any other player during the 2014-2015 Sevens World Series. Accompanied by his partner Tavu Fa, Oseo arrived on Castaway Island Fiji for a three night stay and was welcomed by General Manager Steven Andrews and his dedicated team of hosts. Oseo was the surprise guest at the Housekeeping Team’s Housekeeping Week celebration and recognition awards and later showed guests the skills that helped him win Olympic gold in a game of beach rugby. During his stay, Oseo gave children at the Solevu District School the memory of a lifetime when he made a surprise visit, giving a motivational speech, playing touch rugby with the children and teaching them some of his rugby skills. He also inspired hosts by sharing his rugby life story at the Vakatunuloa host meeting shed. While staying at Castaway Island Fiji, he made himself available for photo opportunities with guests, many of whom now have a photograph of themselves with Fiji’s living legend. Vinaka vakalevu Osea, for sharing your magic with the Castaway team and holidaymakers lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time.

The conversion of a collection of aging hotels on Lewers Street into the widely acclaimed Waikiki Beach Walk is another tribute to David’s leadership. Highly successful not only from a financial standpoint, the destination beautifully showcases the look and feel of Hawai‘i.Years back, in collaboration with former COO Perry Sorenson, David also undertook an initiative to create a unique form of hospitality combining Outrigger’s corporate culture with local values wherever we do business. With guidance from the late Hawaiian scholar George Kanahele, Ke ‘Ano Wa‘a — “The Outrigger Way” — was crafted. It connects the three pillars of the hospitality industry: employees, guests and destination. Outrigger’s distinctive values, blended into a series of local cultures, have set us apart and made us an industry leader. The Pineapple Award also recognizes contributions to Hawai‘i’s community. In his “spare time,” David has been a tireless driver of programs that make Hawai‘i a vibrant community and a better place to live. His efforts include strengthening our public and private schools and assisting military personnel at all levels through his work with the Military Affairs Council of the Chamber of Commerce Hawaii. David has seen just about everything since that first day at Outrigger when Richard “Doc” Kelley assigned him to work the front desk at the OHANA Waikiki East on Kuhio Avenue. Through it all he has risen to become a highly respected hospitality leader, not only here in Hawai‘i but worldwide. Congratulations, David, on this great honor.
