If you have any feedback, or content you’d like to be included in the FORUM, please email your content to Lion Alexis Morgan at [email protected] Welcome to Lion’s year 2019 – 2020! We are raring to get started. Each club in the District is set to take on new challenges and new projects with new or slightly new officers. By now you should have your goals set and plans in place to provide the best service opportunities for your local community. The District is also geared up with a new structure and an energized team to help you meet your goals. The pyramid remains inverted as we continue to place members and clubs at the top. You will continue to see us at your clubs and events to let you know we are there for you, when you want and need our help. We are still one team with one dream – Service. We now have six Zones instead of nine and we no longer have regions. Zones are organized in ways to encourage inter- club coordination and cooperation. The goal of joining hands in service will continue to bloom under this new structure as clubs are given the opportunity to help each other with projects and in doing so help each other grow. This new structure focuses on developing our community of Lions in the District. In doing so, we learn from each other, strengthen our bonds, and become more attractive to people in our communities who want to be part of a dynamic, active organization. More people will be drawn to Lionism as we as we show them we are there working together to do good and have fun at the same time. Our District Leadership trainings continue this year. Four are schedule throughout the District on Aug. 31, 2019, Nov 9, 2019, Jan. 4, 2020, and Mar. 7, 2020. Throughout the year we will offer opportunities to learn about membership, fundraising, social media, and service projects. Plan to come with a group of friends or to meet new ones. stand alone, we are here to work together! In the same way, in the area of membership growth I am here for you. I can talk to you individually, meet with your board, or present to your club ideas and guidance for helping your club to become the best that it can be. Get to know your new ZONE CHAIRS ZONE A – CRAIG DURAND

Member of the Garden Grove Lions Club.

ZONE C – KARI SCHLAGHECK

I am Lion Kari Schlagheck, I have been a Lion for four years and my home club is Buena Park Noon Lions where I have held the positions of Director and Lion Tamer. I am married with two adult children that

are attending college. My husband, Jeff, is also a Lion, and we chair several of our club's service committees. I am very excited to be Zone Chair for the 2019-2020 Lion year and look forward to working with each club in my zone on the following goals; increasing membership including retention and involvement in service projects with events at club level or partnering with other clubs and community partnerships. Here's to an amazing year!

ZONE B – MARC SNIDER

I look forward to the New Zone Chairman’s role. (Except for writing the monthly missive). One of the best opportunities in this position is meeting the clubs in my zone, the people, the way their clubs work and more importantly, making new friends.

One of Governor Mark’s goals this year is to have more clubs work together on their various projects. To do that, each club has to reach out to other clubs in their zone to ask for their participation, if not their help. For instance: Our Club- Laguna Niguel, will be participating in a booth celebrating the City of Laguna Niguel’s 30th Anniversary. The dates are August 16-18. Our club will be advertising Lions, but also selling pre-packaged cookies, candy and water. If you can, please join us. Bring the kids for the Carnival. I’ll be setting up the schedule, so let me know when you can come.

ZONE D – DENTON MOSIER Greetings to all 4-L4 lions. Here’s a little about me, Denton (“Denny) Mosier. I am Zone D chair. This zone includes the smaller clubs that may be smaller in numbers but with the same lofty goals and willingness to

serve. As I look at the new zone, I am amazed by all that they’re doing. I plan to help them grow and work with each other. I am a life-long southern Californian, although I have traveled much. My one bucket list is to set foot in all 50 states. I have touched down in 43 states and will add four more this September. When I retired from full-time work in September 2013, I taught part-time for a few years in CPP’s

College of Business. In November of 2013, I, as a Pomona city Planning Commissioner, was at a ribbon-cutting event for the Target center at Rio Rancho Road the state highway 71. There, I was approached by Richard Sugerman, Pomona Host president, who invited my wife and we to attend a club meeting. I did and immediately fell in love with Lions. I really enjoy the service and leadership opportunities. My favorite story is a vision screening that included glasses for a six-year-old boy who was far sided. We had to go find glasses for him because he was far-sided. He could see to the moon but couldn’t read. When I got to his house with his glasses, he put them on and exclaimed, “Wow, I can read not.: What a great feeling I had then and still have that now. I plan to continue to help my zone and district grow. Here’s to a great year.

ZONE E - ANNETTE HATCH I am a proud Southern California native and member of the Ontario-Upland Lions Club. My role as an educator has helped build a strong foundation in leadership, and this year International President Gudrun Yngvadottir honored me as a New Voice in Lionism. Over the years, my club has honored me with a Henry Aslan Award, Lion of the Year, and a Melvin Jones Fellow, but one of my greatest accomplishments was starting the Chino High School Leo Club and helping students to find their passion for service. I live in Ontario with my loving husband, Tim, and the two wonder dogs, Sydney and Cooper. My goals for the next year are to help District E to create a legacy project where all 8 clubs can participate and to help build identify and build future leaders among the clubs.

Millennials; and our future

Just wanted to share some information on the “Millennial” generation in our communities. I found the information interesting. I have been researching in advance of a presentation I have in the fall. Obviously these are generalizations, but statistics are pretty consistent. Hopefully it will be useful to each of us as we look at ways to grow our membership and attract the next generation of great volunteers. Born Between 1980-2000 - First Generation to grow up entirely in the electronic & social media age. Millennials are more multicultural, internationally minded, and social tolerant. Social Media has made their world very small. They seek Purpose and want to be close to peers, prefer to work in groups. They are achievement oriented and prefer the closure of completing their tasks. By 2020, 50% of Workplace will be Millennials. By 2025, 75% of Workplace will be Millennials. Millennials prefer nontraditional work hours; definitely not a 9 to 5 mindset. Currently, they are the largest buying power of all generations. They have access information through multiple devices; phones, tablets, PCs. On average, check their devices; 27 times per hour. Millennials are considered the influencers of the market/business worlds. 2/3 of Millennials would choose to work for a company that gives to a charity, rather than one that does not. Popular cause areas include; Children’s Charities, International & Human rights 40% have taken an active interest in a charitable cause through their employer 30% of those, have become active volunteers or organizers 30% make regular donations through their employers When asked what they want by Forbes magazine, here are the top response; To Make the World a better place, To be their own boss To have a “Coach” rather than a boss To be a part of a team Flexible work/volunteer schedules To have a healthy balance of Work/Life/Volunteering Millennials care about issues, not organizations. They want to know WHERE their money goes and what kind of impact it makes. When volunteering, hands on is important to them. Millennials also view charitable giving as a way to build their personal brands and reputations. They feel it demonstrates leadership amongst their peers and their communities. Key Strategies to Motivate Millennials;

1. Ask for more than money, ask for their help 2. Tell Stories; personal relatable real life stories have huge value for them 3. Communicate urgency; their world is very quick paced, they want to act today 4. Keep it simple; communications should be “Tweetable & Retweet able”. Short and to the point. 5. Share- they want to be a part of the process, and want to be able to share with peers

Hopefully we can keep these characteristics and statistics in mind as we work on membership growth plans. Respectfully, PCC David A. Radtke

ADVENTURED WITH THE YOUTH EXCHANGE 2019 Our adventure started this year with picking up our students on Saturday and Sunday and then taking them up to Lions Camp at Teresita Pines in Wrightwood for a few days. Since there was not an official MD4 Camp this year the host parents of 4L4 decided that we did not want our students to miss this fun time. We worked closely with the camp to create a mini-camp adventure and opened the camp up to Leos, High Schools Students and other Exchange Families in Southern California. In all we had 17 youth and 6 adults. We had a spectacular time. There was fun, food, games, fellowship, bonding and more.

We started the night off after dinner with some icebreaker games so we could all get to know each other. We then had each country do a 1-3 minute presentation on their country followed by questions form the others. After that, they went outside to play volleyball. As it got dark, we lit the fire pit and made s’mores. As we listened, we found that the bonding and presentations began a discussion that carried on all night with them asking each other questions about their home life, area, types of music they like, food they like, favorite past times and more. When it was too dark for fun we set up jenga and card games indoors, while some came inside to play many still wanted to play volleyball so they put their minds to work to figure out how to make this work and next thing we know there were flashlights shining on the court and net and they were playing FLASHLIGHT VOLLEYBALL!!!

We got up at 7:00 AM with breakfast at 8, followed by Crafts, Hiking, Cannoning, Lunch, Rockwall Climbing, Archery, Swimming and then dinner. After dinner, we played more indoor games of Jenga, Uno and again flashlight volleyball. Jenga was the hit of the night with many competitions.

On Wednesday we got up, had breakfast, cleaned and packed then waited for some of our students to be picked up, while waiting, they of course again played games of volleyball. Our students and the others that joined us had a wonderful time at camp and hope that we add back in the MD4 camp next year so the

students can experience this fun. The state committee will be meeting at the Council of Governors meeting in August and with the Board of Camp Teresita Pines to try to get this up and running. 4L4 Host families agreed, if it were not back for 2020 we would again do a mini camp for our students, as it was one of their favorite activities while here.

We could not do any of what we do with the students without the financial support of Lions Clubs, Lions and some of our community that donate for raffles we have. To host 8-10 students annually it takes many months of planning, fundraising and club donations. We lost one of our big fundraisers with Outback this year and will work hard to find a replacement fundraiser.

Our biggest donation annually comes from Orange County Central Lions Club and we thank them for being our biggest supporter every year. Many other clubs send in donations annually as well. These students come over with little or no money and are coming over on scholarships from clubs. While are host parents pay to attend the events and provide food for the students, all activities the students do are paid from the money we raise.

More adventures of YEP will follow, also news up upcoming fundraisers! Lion Diane, District 4L4 YEP Chair and MD4 YEC Committee Member

75TH ANNUAL FISH FRY BEATS THE HEAT & EXPECTATIONS This past Saturday and Sunday, Lions, Leos, residents, and visitors crowded in and enjoyed the 75th Annual Seal Beach Lions Fish Fry, codenamed “Fishnado.” Chairman Scott Newton said, “we had perfect weather, a great crowd, no significant incidents or accidents and served a lot of food. Everyone had an amazing time.” His co-chairman, Mike Haley added, “We really want to thank the bands, all of our volunteers and our sponsors Republic Services, Firestone Walker, City of Seal Beach, Sun News, South Coast Seafood, and dB Concert Sound for helping us make this one of the best Fish Frys in our history.”

Mayor Tom Moore, Mayor Pro Tem Schelly Sustarsic, Councilman Mike Virapapa, and Councilman Joe Kalmick were in attendance and commented what a great community event it was during Monday night’s City Council meeting. The Seal Beach police department supported the Lions with additional security for the cash handling and was a visible presence around the Fry. Overall, the entire City deserves a big “thank you” from the Lions for the ongoing support of staff, particularly Tim Kelsey and his team for all they do, each and every year.

The dance floor was full both days in the afternoon through close each day. Lindsay Safe, vice-chairman and volunteer coordinator said, “I don’t think the community realizes how many people it takes to run this event. We plan all year for it, and we have hundreds of Lion and Leo volunteers who take shifts and do set up and breakdown. This year was one of the busiest ever. We were selling tickets as fast as people could complete a transaction.”

New president of the Lions, Mike Gibbons, and his co-chair for the Opportunity drawing, Ramona Kies, (the car and other special prizes) had pulled out canisters from the specially engineered, fully automated, second debuted, “Randomizer,” and with the assistance of the Miss Seal Beach court, drew out the winning tickets. Gibbons, who also assists in the payment points said, “we are about 20% ahead of last year in total revenue, and though final numbers aren’t in yet, it was definitely a profitable year for our charity account.” The winners were: 2019 Subaru Crosstrek: Ticket #715 Derek Moore, Seal Beach, iMac: Ticket #575 Casey & Maggie, bartenders at Clancy’s, the $750 Amazon Gift Card: Ticket #487 Susan Pierce, Seal Beach and finally the $250 Amazon Gift Card: Ticket #244 Joe LaVela, Chatham, NJ.

At press time, based on past history, the final revenue for the event would likely be in the $80,000 range. President Mike Gibbons said, “everyone really came together this year and made the service to the community and fundraising easier. We were less stressed, and the crowd size was perfect. We are really thankful for everyone who attended and supported us. The LEOs really made a huge difference, and without the help of our youth, the event wouldn’t be possible.” For some Lions, big hit were the sunglasses which were part of the “Sharknado” branding provided by Lion Mark Newton.

The Seal Beach Lions is the largest club in the western hemisphere with 350+ members as of July 23rd and is currently celebrating its 80th anniversary in 2019. It is part of district 4L-4, which encompasses most of the inland empire and Orange County. Nearly all of the District Cabinet including District Governor Mark Piva, 1st Vice District Governor Steve Lacy and his wife Susan, along with Immediate Past District Governor, Randy McMillian and his wife Geri were in attendance. He said, “the Seal Beach Lions simply do one of the very best events not only in our district but in all of MD-4 (California). We want to support this great event and be part of it at every level of Lions Club International.”

Finally, Republic Services, the presenting sponsor, with Manuel Gouveia said he was amazed at the engagement of the Lions and everyone who came out. He brought candy, give away recycled shopping bags with a hard bottom and a side pouch, demonstration materials, and informed individuals and families about organic waste recycling. Manny said, “This event was one of the best we have ever sponsored. It felt great to really be part of the community, and Republic Services wants to be a part of the fabric of the Seal Beach community for many years to come. Each opportunity to educate and be proactive with all of the citizens and visitors to Seal Beach helps the environment and ultimately improve service for everyone.”

The Seal Beach Lions club wants to continue in an even bigger way for the 76th annual event coming up in 2020, so if you’re going to be a part, or need more information on the Lions, please visit Sealbeachlions.org. Finally, please remember to save the date, next year, the third weekend in July is Fish Fry!

California Lions Friends in Sight California Lions Friends in Sight (CLFIS) volunteers provide free vision screenings and free recycled eyeglasses for thousands of disadvantaged individuals throughout Southern California and Northern Mexico. The primary goals are to educate the public on vision related matters, to address the functional forms of visual impairment with eyeglasses and to assess ocular health conditions that could lead to vision impairment. Each year CLFIS conducts 5 doctor led screenings in District 4-L4 as part of a program that totals over 30 events stretching east to west from Cathedral City to Oxnard, and south to San Diego. Screenings are typically performed on Saturdays with five weekend-long screenings in Northern Mexico. Since July 2010, CLFIS have screened more than 90,000 people, provided eyeglasses where needed, and advised more than 8,000 to seek medical or surgical care. The job of organizing and conducting these events would be impossible without our volunteers and annual donations from District 4-L4 Lions Clubs and others. To learn more go to www.californialionsfriendsinsight.org We invite all to join their fellow Lions for the camaraderie and satisfaction that comes with volunteering in the District or anywhere on the CLFIS schedule.
