Message from the Headteacher:
Coppice students have surpassed themselves once again in
their enthusiasm, commitment and participation in a huge
range of events which are detailed in this newsletter. It has
been an exceptionally busy year with more extra-curricular
events than I can remember. Students have excelled in their
support for their peers by attending performances and showing
their appreciation.
For those students who have been on trips - France, Towers,
Harry Potter Experience, Black Country Museum, Think Tank
and many more this year we have received nothing but praise
from the staff who accompanied them and the members of the
public who encountered them.
Our students are the stars of Coppice. I am immensely proud of
each and every one of them who strives to achieve their
personal best day in day out.
We now sadly say goodbye to a number of Coppice Staff –
Mr Seaman, Ms Maye, Ms Quigley, Mr Turner, Ms Bravo, Mrs
Bragoli, Mrs Harris and Mrs Hall. Mrs Hall retires after 25 years
working at Coppice. We wish them all the best in their new
ventures.
We will also be welcoming a number of new members of staff
to Coppice – Mr Blanche (English), Miss Bradshaw (English), Mr
Corns (Media Studies), Mr Dunn (Science), Mr Cooper-Richards
(Drama/Music), Ms Khanum (Psychology), Miss Dijoux (French),
Mrs Wiley (SENCO), Mr Watton (Maths). Joining our support
staff are Mr Cunningham (English Mentor) and Mrs Roden (Data
Manager) who joined us earlier this term. We welcome all new
staff and look forward to working together in September.
We return from the summer break on Friday 4th September (Y7
and 6th Form only) Monday 7th September 8:50am (all years).
I wish you a happy, enjoyable and sunny summer holiday.

Thank you to all students and parents who attended the two
evenings on 23rd & 24th June. More parents attended this year
than ever before and even more students were awarded for their
efforts and achievements than in previous years. There was a
delightful atmosphere and it was wonderful to see the smiles on
the students faces as they collected their awards. The evening was
topped off by some outstanding musical performances by some of
the award winners. Thank you to all staff who attended.
CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL AWARD WINNERS.
Mr S Clifton, Assistant Headteacher
ACHIEVEMENT EVENING
Now exam season is over and I am finally catching up with everything I
just wanted to say ‘THANK YOU’ to everyone who helped to make sure
that the Summer Exam season ran smoothly and calmly. I couldn’t do it
without everyone pulling together as a team including the Site Team
who set up the rooms, Behaviour & Learning Managers for helping with
the registers and the PE department who give up the use of their
Sports Hall. Most importantly, thank you to all students for their
positive behaviour and attitude throughout this very busy exam period.
Results: I am now looking at Results Days in the Summer. Good luck to
all students.
A Level Results - Thursday 13th August
G.C.S.E Results - Thursday 20th August
Students will need to arrive at school at 10.00am.

EXAMS
Science - Year 8 Think Tank Visit
This year’s Think Tank visit was very successful.
Students were involved in the following activities:-
Giant life size practical’s including seesaws, gerbil wheel, rocket launching and bridge making
Solar System Experience – with a screen on the roof, students learnt about the PAST AND THE FUTURE OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM. This relates back directly to their Year 8 curriculum.
Forensic Science Workshop – making fingerprints and solving crimes.
Energy Show – this gave students the opportunity to look at the 7 types of energy and to also electrocute the teacher. This again builds on the Year 8 topics of energy and electricity
Students were excellent ambassadors for Coppice.

Sixth Form
Sixth Form students took part in another morning of Development and Enrichment Time in which Coppice welcomed a number of external deliverers.
Students had talks and delivery from a Lloyds TSB Branch Manager regarding student accounts, budgeting and finance.
Coppice also welcomed the Regional Manager from the Anthony Nolan Education Programme ('Register & Be A Lifesaver'). Anthony Nolan is a charity which helps patients with blood cancer by matching them with donors willing to give their bone marrow for potentially life-saving transplants. Our students gave a fantastic account of themselves and a number of students signed up for more information regarding the programme and becoming a donor.
Coppice continued there previous record of providing in depth University guidance, as they brought in Newman University and a member of the UCAS team to deliver sessions to students regarding preparing for up and coming events and applying for University through UCAS.
Also delivering and supporting the morning was the schools Connexions officer, offering in depth advice and guidance to students regarding their options after the Sixth Form. A very valuable session to students looking to progress in a range of careers.

Music The Ingestre Hall residential took place over the first weekend of July. This was an extremely
intensive rehearsal weekend for all of the school’s musical ensembles and the two senior
dance companies. Many hours of productive rehearsal took place, in which the students’
energy, focus and enthusiasm were superb followed by two evenings of entertainment, fun
and bonding. All this despite a massively broken night’s sleep the first night due to a
spectacular storm! The performance to parents at the end of the weekend was of fantastic
quality and we are already looking forward to next year’s visit.
History
Year 7 have been looking at William the Conqueror and the period of the Normans. As
part of this they have looked at Castles built during that period addressing work on both
the Motte and Bailey Castles and Stone Keep Castles. To help them to enhance their
learning on this topic the students were asked to build castles making a choice on the type
of castle they would like to build and enhance their knowledge about. In doing this work
the students have excelled and the Castles were outstanding.
But, as it was a competition only a few could end up as
winners (even though I believe everyone was a winner for
they were all able to achieve and to a good level). 5 were
chosen as overall winners. Excellent work and well done to
all of the students.
Drama
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: The Drama department's annual trip to London's West End took place on Wednesday 10th June 2015 and was a great success. In previous years we have seen; 'The Woman in Black', 'The 39 Steps', 'Billy Elliot' and this year 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'! All the students involved went on a back stage tour of the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane; this was a great experience as it is one of the oldest theatres in Britain so there were lots of interesting tales to be told. The students then watched the matinee of 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' which was very impressive and should provide them with lots of material for their GCSE Drama theatre evaluations.
Mrs Bourne and Mrs Hall Drama Festival - 'TV Times' 16th June 2015: Congratulations to all the students who took part in this year's Drama festival and many thanks to all the parents, friends and family who came along to show their support! The show was themed around TV shows and adverts with Year 7 Drama club recreating their favourite advertisements and Junior and Senior Drama club devising a range of comedy scenes from well known British TV programmes. This was all linked together by some comical sketches based on the TV show 'Goggle Box' presented by the Year 12 Drama students. The festival was also the Drama clubs' time to say good bye to Mrs Hall as she is moving on to teach at Wolverhampton University in September! We hope to see Mrs Hall at future Drama Festivals as a guest on honour and thank her for all her work over the years in the Drama Department!
Mrs Bourne
Drama Workshops have been run by ex-Coppice Drama Student’s Sophie Perry, Josh Holdcroft and Hannah Collier this term. These have ranged from A-Level seminars to monologue workshops and team teaching of Key Stage three lessons. It has been really valuable having Josh, Sophie and Hannah to help within the Drama department this term; how wonderful to see past Coppice students show such excellent initiative and confidence in adult life!
Mrs Bourne
GCSE Drama Performance exams: Congratulations to all students who took part in the GCSE practical exams on 30th April 2015. After 100s of hours of rehearsals since January the students produced some excellent performances for the visiting examiner. Well done from Mrs Bourne, Mrs Hall and Drama Teaching Assistant, Michael Southan.
AS Drama and Theatre Studies
Performance Exams: Congratulations to the AS Drama and Theatre Studies students for their excellent effort in their monologue & duologue exam pieces which were performed in front of a visiting examiner on Wednesday 20th May 2015 alongside their group performance of 'Matilda Liar'! You put on a brilliant show, well done!
Mrs Bourne
Central Youth Theatre Workshop: A group of high ability Year 8 students were involved in a physical Drama workshop on Tuesday 16th June 2015 delivered by Central Youth Theatre. Coppice were delighted to be able to host this event and all the students involved enjoyed the range of theatre activities that took place on this afternoon.
Mrs Bourne & Mrs Hall
Bard Boot Camp: Coppice Performing Arts School AS Level Drama and Theatre Studies Students were invited to take part in the inaugural 'Bard Boot Camp' at Wolverhampton Grand Theatre on Thursday 18th June 2015. The day involved a performance of ' Hamlet cut to the bone' a lecture on Elizabethan theatre from professor Michael Mangan and a range of theatre workshops based on disciplines such as stage fighting and story telling. Coppice students stood out in the practical workshops and were excellent ambassadors for the school, well done to all involved.
Mrs Bourne
Drama department volunteers: Many thanks to the following ex-Coppice students who have been back this year to support in lessons and extra curricular clubs: Josh Holdcroft, Sophie Perry, Hannah Collier and Michael Southan. It has been wonderful to have you as honorary members of the Drama department; we wish you luck in your future studies and hope to see you again soon!

Dance
Harry Ondrak-Wright – A huge congratulations to Harry for reaching the Semi-Finals of the BBC Young Dancer of the Year Competition 2015. This was an excellent achievement and a huge accolade to Harry’s dedication and hard work, seeing him compete against highly trained conservatoire dancers. We are all very proud of Harry.
Rosie Kay Dance Company – A curtain raiser for 5 Soldiers at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre. As part of their Sixth Form Dance Project, Coppice students completed an intensive residency with Artists from the company; researching & developing the work based on the physical and emotional effect of war. Students performed their work to audiences at a Matinee & Evening performance on Saturday 25th April 2015.
6th Form Drama Visit to Liverpool: A-Level Drama and Theatre Studies students explored Liverpool on 16th April before watching a stunning production of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' at The Liverpool Everyman Theatre. The students will evaluate the performance they watched in relation to Elizabethan Performance Conditions in their Unit 4 exam in June. Year 11 BTEC Students planned and ran a Year 7 Olympic Afternoon as part of their BTEC Course. Students rotated around 8 activity stations, competing for Bronze, Silver & Gold Points. The afternoon was a complete success, enjoyed by all Year 7 competitors. A Big Thank You to our Year 11 students who demonstrated fantastic leadership skills. A group of year 7 students have been selected to become the PE 'stretch and challenge' group. Each week the students have been taking part in a range of activities focusing on extending their skills and improving their knowledge and understanding. So far it has been a great success and some of the students have already made the school’s rounders and athletics teams, competing against other Wolverhampton schools. This is only the start of what these group of talented students can achieve.
Year 9/10 Girls Volleyball Team achieved 3rd place in the Black Country Games. The competition also saw Coppice Boys Team achieve 4th place. Well Done.
Girls Football Club Signing: Olivia Nicholls and Mia Cooke have both signed another years contract with Birmingham City Football Club. They will also be joined by Billie Jo Edge from West Bromwich Albion. Well Done Girls.
Track & Field Representatives Lynx Ananfack-Noumey and Louise Whitehouse have been selected to represent the West Midlands in the English Schools Athletics Championships on the 10th/11th July at Gateshead Athletics Stadium, Newcastle. This is a national competition where they will be competing against the best athletes in the country. This is an outstanding achievement where both athletes required high entry standards in their events. Louise will be throwing the discus where she throws 29m and Lynx will be throwing shot putt where he throws 13m! Two huge distances from two year 8 students. We wish them the very best of luck!! A group of year 7/8 students have been selected to represent the school on Tuesday 7th July at the Wolverhampton Schools Athletics Finals taking place at Aldersley stadium. Students will compete in events from both track and field depending on their strengths. They will compete against the best athletes from across the city. Fingers crossed we will come back with lots of medals and fantastic performances!
Amy Mincher (Year 11 Student) represented Great Britain in the National 3 Tumbling Championships in Peterborough on Saturday 30th May. She achieved 12th place. Well Done Amy.
Jaipreet Waraich is a member of Walsall
Synchronised Swimming Club, winning various
medals and trophies over her years of competing.
Jaipreet and her new team of 10 recently won a
Silver Medal at the Novice Competition at the
Walsall Gala Baths as 12's and under and they
hope to get many more achievements like these
over the year. We all wish Jaipreet the vey best in
her future competitions.
Sports day is Thursday 16th July at Aldersley Stadium. The
whole school will be travelling to the stadium as athletes or spectators. This event gives the students the opportunity to compete for their house across many events. It is always a very successful day, enjoyed by all. Which house will win this year? Will Wightwick make it a hat trick? Good luck to every athlete and may the best house win!!!
After an excellent year of learning and working hard, Year 7 were offered the
opportunity to go to the Black Country Museum and look at how we used to
live in the past.
Nearly every student attended this trip and the feedback from them was “It
was brill”, “I really enjoyed it” “I didn’t know that ….” So not only did they
have a fun day out but one of great educational value also.
We went down the mines, into the school and took a barge along the canal.
We also looked in the general stores and visited the homes of people from
that period. The students really liked the cake shop, old fashioned sweet
shop and the chip shop! Everything done in a manner of the ‘old days’. They
also visited the fairground and looked at the first steam engine.
The behaviour of the students was very good and they were a credit to
Coppice – well done Year 7.
The students’ behaviour was excellent! We saw The Great Hall, all of the famous props and sets from the film and even got the chance to ride on a broomstick and climb aboard the famous Hogworts Express on Platform 9 3/4. We were also able to see the magic of how all the mythical creatures came to life with animatronics demonstrations. A magical time was had by all! “I learnt some amazing facts from behind the scenes that I would never have believed.” Jessica Goodwin
This year is the 4th Exceptional attenders trip, and we decided to go to the Harry Potter Studios. This year has had the highest number of 100% attenders in Coppice history and, on the return journey, the students were already asking Mr Clifton where they will be going this time next year……
What an inspirational group!
Massive "Thank you" to all the staff who came to the Prom on Saturday 27th June. It really makes a difference having you there. The students love their staff being there...and moral support for me! As ever Coppice students not only looked amazing but yet again were fantastically behaved. Expect nothing less!
Ms S McKenna
