Orchestra Notes from Mr. Hire Congratulations: I would like to congratulate all three of the SHS Orchestras at OMEA State Orchestra Contest on Feb.

19-20. All three of our orchestras earned Superior (I) ratings including the SHS String Orchestra, SHS

Chamber Strings, and SHS Symphony Orchestra. The students worked very hard for several months insuring

that our musical selections were technically accurate and musical. Our efforts have paid off, and I am very

proud of our students! I would like to thank Wendy Donahue and our parent chaperones who spent early and

late hours supervising our students.

On January 23, SHS Instrumental students entered 141 events at the Greater Cleveland Solo and

Ensemble Contest at Fairview High School, and were by far the largest high school represented. Most of our

students earned Superior (I) and Excellent (II) ratings. Again, the hard work and effort of our exceptional

instrumentalists paid off with exceptional performances.

Congratulations to cellist Nick Simul and Violinist Kevin Tan who were members of the 2016 OMEA

All-State Orchestra. They were accepted via their seating auditions at the 2015 Northeast Regional Orchestra in

November and represent some of the best high school musicians in the State. They both rehearsed and

performed at the Ohio Music Education Association’s Professional Conference in Cincinnati, Ohio in early

February. They were conducted by Dr. Sandra Dackow, an internationally acclaimed composer, conductor, and

educator.

Solo and Ensemble Contest: Students who earned Superior and/or Excellent ratings at Solo and Ensemble Contest may choose to

purchase a medal for their exceptional performances. Order forms are available in the music dept. Medals are

$3 each (cash only please). Forms and money are due back to the music department by Friday, March 11.

Spring Concert Date Changed: At the end of January, SHS learned that the State mandated testing dates for our high school students

will be the last week of April, the same week as our spring concert, Normally our spring concert is in mid-May,

but due to the early end of the school year, was scheduled for April 28. Due to testing, the spring concert has

been moved to Thursday, May 12 starting at 6:30 pm (this concert starts earlier to accommodate senior

recognition). Please mark your calendars.

All City Orchestra Festival:

Please note, this is slightly different than what is published on original concert schedule: Part I, Wednesday April 6, 7:00 PM, SHS Auditorium

Fifth Grade Beginning Orchestra

Elementary Honors Orchestra

Center MS Orchestras

SHS String Orchestra

Part II, Thursday, April 7, 7:00 PM, SHS Auditorium

All-City Advanced Orchestra (sixth grade)

Albion MS Orchestras

SHS Freshman Orchestra

SHS Symphony Orchestra

Symphony Auditions: I am starting to receive emails from parents and students who are interested in auditioning for the

symphony orchestra. I hope to put audition materials together in March and hold auditions at some time

in April. I will let all students know once audition materials and dates have been determined.

2016-2017 Concert Schedule: It has come to my attention that parents are unaware of the concert/contest schedule until the beginning

of the school year - even though concert schedules are published and sent home with students at the end of the

previous school year. I want to make you aware that the SHS music department will be meeting to discuss next

year’s concert schedule in April. As in past years, all students will receive a paper copy of the schedule prior to

school’s dismissal for the year. Likewise, all dates will be placed on the music department calendar online and

uploaded to the SHS Orchestras website. Please look for and ask your student to provide you with this valuable

information to help avoid conflicts.

Musically,

Andrew Hire

Director of Orchestras

BAND NOTES

SIMB Concession News

Hello SIMB Parents and Supporters!!

#1 Thank You

#2 Last Concessions Sign-Up for the Year!

First off, THANK YOU to all of my AWESOME VOLUNTEERS that worked Concessions during the Boy's Basketball Season. We got the system down to a well-oiled machine with a core group of students and adults that could set up, serve, and clean up without a hitch! We appreciate everyone who came out to help all year from stocking to cooking to selling to cleaning up. There were many hands that helped this year's Concessions sales to be successful and we continue to be SIMB's largest fundraiser. Strongsville's Instrumental Music Students say "THANK YOU" to all concessions volunteers for both football and basketball. We earned over $20,000 which will help all instrumental music students in Strongsville.

Secondly, we have our last three Concession times this year for the Boy's Basketball Playoffs, which will be held at SHS this coming Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Please consider signing up to help. It is a great way to help and the volunteer times are shorter because there is only one game per night. Cut and paste the links below into your web browser to get to the sign-ups for the specific games. Wed. 3/2/16 Basketball Concessions Boy's Playoffs

Again, thank you! We had a SUCCESSFUL year because of the many people who lent a helping hand!

LOOKING AHEAD TO 2016-2017

Dear Parents of Band and Orchestra Students, Would you like to expand your social network with people who may become great friends? Would you like to have fun while working with other dynamic parents who provide support for our district's renowned music program? Our Strongsville Instrumental Music Boosters (SIMB), who provide extensive funding and programming for our instrumental groups in the elementary, middle, and high schools, need your help for a couple of open positions. SIMB is looking for a second concession co-chair for next year's sports seasons (football and basketball). The concession stands are the lifeblood of the SIMB's ability to provide extensive funding for our instrumental music programs throughout the district. A second person to spearhead this vital committee would make the overall job much easier. If you like to organize things and work directly with the community, consider this position to get to know a lot of great people who work wonders. We're also looking for someone to chair our Krispy Kreme Donut and annual Hoagie Day opportunities. The Donut Chair position entails scheduling and arranging pickup for a tasty order just several times throughout the year. Easy, no frills and the kids will love you for it. Look for additional information in this newsletter regarding the Hoagie Chair position. Do you like to write or enjoy keeping up with the latest information? Consider chairing the Newsletter. Several times a year you will request, review, and organize articles and flyers from the directors and other committee chairs. The SIMB secretary will then forward the newsletter to the SIMB membership. All of this can be done from home while working around your schedule. Think you'll be lost or can't do it? No way! Our Executive Board and Committee chairs provide support and guidance all the way. We have over 25 chairpersons spearheading our committees. We all help each other. Nice people doing great things for our amazing students! No experience is necessary and we guarantee you'll have fun while getting to know other parents and our musical students. Please send your contact information and any questions to [email protected] Help make a difference in your child's life - get involved. It takes the whole 'Ville to make great music! Thanks, Sandy Treudler

LOOKING FOR A HOAGIE CHAIR! Hoagie Sandwich and Wrap Sales have been a great way to raise funds for SIMB for many years. They are a well-supported tradition that our Strongsville community looks forward to. Our previous Hoagie Chairperson, Debbie Smith, has moved on, but is willing to train the new chairperson for a sale we would like to hold this coming Spring. If you are interested in chairing this one-time event, please contact Mary Anne Messina at [email protected] or at (440) 539-1974.

DID YOU KNOW… THE FUNDS EARNED FROM OUR CONCESSION STANDS BENEFIT BOTH ORCHESTRA AND MARCHING BAND STUDENTS. They are used to purchase new instruments, sheet music, make instrument repairs, schedule guest clinicians to work with our students, present programs like “Electrify Your Strings”, purchase awards and plaques, etc. Running the concession stands at football & basketball games is our largest fundraiser and we thank you for your help.

CALLING ALL ORCHESTRA & BAND PARENTS AND STUDENTS…WE NEED YOU! Please consider signing up to help us out with concessions at our home basketball games this winter. Please watch for more information with dates, times and sign-up links. Remember, many hands make light work, and we have about 300 band & orchestra students and even more parents! If each parent/student signed up to work at only one or two games a year, we would never need to ask for volunteers. For more information, please contact Sharon Alley at [email protected].

SIMB MEMBERSHIP

Thank you to all who have submitted their membership forms for this school year! Becoming a member of SIMB is just one of the ways you can help to support our music organization. Please consider joining our organization next year. 2016-2017 membership forms will become available on our website and in our newsletters next year.

If you have any questions that are not answered by this newsletter, please contact me at [email protected].
