Wildcat Roar CARVER MIDDLE SCHOOL A Message From the Principal MARCH 2012 Dear Carver Parents, The second semester of the 2011-2012 school year officially began on Wednesday, January 4, 2012. After the winter break it is not unusual for students to allow their class grade point averages to decrease due to incomplete or missing assignments. Parents, I encourage you to stay involved by monitoring student grades and assignments. Fortunately, through the use of modern technology, parents that have provided a reliable email address to the school automatically receive weekly emails that provide general descriptions of their students’ overall academic grades and attendance. Aside from receiving weekly grade updates, parents (and students) also have the option of logging into the Power School system at any time (day or night) to review student academic and attendance files that contain specific information about their students’ class assignments. Most parents already have their students’ access information; however, if you do not have specific access information for your student(s) please email or telephone our registrar, Pat Clark at 918-925-1420 or [email protected]. The instructional focus for the third quarter emphasizes the preparation of our students for the upcoming Oklahoma Core Curriculum Tests (OCCT) and End of Instruction (EOI) exams. Proficient student performance on these tests and student attendance will determine Carver’s Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) score, required by the federal “No Child Left Behind Act” and the number of options that your student will have in furthering his or her education. Our staff remains committed to meeting these standards. We ask that you continue to work with us to ensure that our community of lifelong learners is successful. As always, at Carver we have an open door policy. Please feel free to call the school for any assistance or information that you may need. Carver is your school, and your support and involvement are critical to our continued success. Sincerely, Melissa J. Woolridge, Ph.D. Principal, Carver Middle School

Principal, Carver Middle School

In 2010, Tulsa voters passed a $354,000,000 bond proposal. All Tulsa Public Schools received portions of the approved monies for various im-provements. Some schools had new classroom or building additions added, while other schools received upgrades in heating/air conditioning units, window replacements, roofing, etc.

In an effort to continue providing for student and staff safety all middle/junior high schools were allocated $100,000 of the 2010 bond proposal to upgrade their video surveillance system. Carver’s security camera upgrade was completed this past week. The latest video surveillance camera system is now protecting the students, faculty, staff, buildings, and grounds of the Carver Middle School campus.

Along with the video surveillance system, Carver received a “limited access” entry system. All visitors to the Carver Campus will now have to press a but-ton located just outside the main office entrance, and wait for the magnetic door system to “click” before entering. Once inside, the normal process of a visitor signing in or signing a student out, will still be utilized.

With recent events in other states that concern student safety, be

assured that the Carver faculty, staff, and administration consider the well-

being of all students their number one priority. Our recent video surveillance

and limited access entry system will make that job somewhat easier.

GREAT JOB,

MEKHI, Carver is

proud of you…

Thank you for

sharing, Mrs.

Singleton….

Mekhi Singleton was awarded 1st Place in the MLK essay “Keepers of the Dream”. This is the 2nd year he has won that contest.

“Cashing My Check for Freedom˝

By Mekhi Robert Singleton, 7th grade

I live my life as a reflection of Dr. King’s dream by cashing my check for freedom he talked about in his famous I have a

dream speech. In November, 2011, I will be 13 years old, a teenager finally. My parents are giving me more freedom. They allow me to

go out with my friends. I know that they expect me to be respectful, trustworthy, and responsible for my actions. My grandparents

were “Freedom Riders˝ in the 1960’s (They were inspired by Dr. King), and last summer they invited us to a talk they gave at the

Brown Foundation, (Brown vs. Board of Education.) I learned more about the Civil Rights movement, and I learned to appreciate the

freedoms I now have because of it.

I cash my check for freedom and liberty by not being locked up for stealing, skipping school, or doing drugs. With more cour-

age than it takes to fight, like Dr. King I work out my problems with non-violence. As my Mom always tells me to, “get busy living,

and not get busy dying.˝ To me, I think prison is modern day slavery, and the people there in reality are getting busy dying. It comes

to mind that black men as well as women are sent there, and work for close to nothing.

When I want to go to the movies or to the mall, I can call my friends, who are Hispanic and White, I am black. It

is fun to do things with them and not worry about what race we are. I also have freedom to play on the same football team with

them. I live my life as a reflection of Dr. King’s dream by living every moment, every day, like a football game. Play hard, play

fair, and do my best to win.

Another good thing about freedom is that I can earn some money. My Uncle taught me how to work in the lawn mowing

business. Last summer I saved money for things that I really want. Where we go to church people come from all different types of

families, doesn’t matter what race we are or how much money we have. We’re free to pray and worship God.

I can be President of the United States. I can become a professional football player, architect, or sports doctor. I don’t have to

live in the Jim Crow South with substandard houses and schools. I live the life that Dr. King, my parents, my friends, and God want

me to live. Freedom means I have my check and the bank of the American people stamped it good.

The Adventures of Mrs. Spavins

This month we did a few fun things. We headed to Seoul to see the King Tut Exhibit at the National Museum. Seoul is the second largest city in the world. I think ALL of them were on the subway with us on Saturday afternoon. In Tokyo, there are official “packers” who push people onto the trains. This wasn’t THAT full, but it was really close! I hope to get to To-kyo soon to see for ourselves. We thought of Ms. Zaheer the whole time we were at the exhibit.

THIS was for Ms. Zaheer too!

At the end of the month, we went on a hike to a Buddhist temple. Buddhist nuns helped us in the gift shop. We hiked

WAY up a mountain to the temple and were able to listen to the chants and meditation of the monks. Several people came

up to the temple to share in the meditation. Some people think Buddhism is a “religion” like we think of, including a “god.”

Really, Budda was a philosopher who was not concerned with “god” or “afterlife.” He was concerned with coming to

peace with life here filled with compassion and gratitude. It was kind of cool to listen to the chants of the monks while

they try to rid their minds of the problems of this world. The nun told me that the “Ommm…” the beginning chant of the

monks, holds all of the energy of the universe. I asked them if they had met my son! I am pretty sure he has some of the

energy of the universe too.

We also went to a spa here where the tiny fish eat the dead skin off of your feet! Talk

about ticklish – kind of crazy really. But I have to agree that we have NO flaky feet

anymore!

We think of you all often and hope you are doing well. During the cold here, we were certainly wanting to

share in the extra warm Tulsa winter. I hope that does NOT mean that we will have another extra hot sum-

mer! We will see you in June!

GOOD JOB

U ROCK!

For the past two years Carver Middle School has raised over $1100 for the Cup of Joe or-ganization. Donations to this group are used to provide free coffee and other soft beverages to American service members who are over-seas. This donation represents over 500 “Cups of Joe” given to our men and women serving in our Armed Services. As you may have seen we have received many, well over 250, notes of thanks which Ms. Reiter has posted on the bulletin board in the Main Hall across from the Computer Lab. Occasionally a service member inquires about pen pals from our school. If you would be interested in having your child be a pen pal to one of these service members please email Ms. Reiter, [email protected] more information

Congratulations to Chennyri Whitaker, Roneisha Littles, Megan Rodelander, Jackie Howell. They were among the top 10 finalist in the Tulsa Public Schools and Sodexo Future Chefs contest. The final cook-off will be held Thursday, March 8th at Nathan Hale High School. A total of 90 student recipes were sub-mitted for the contest, 60 of which were sub-mitted by Carver students.

To date we have received about 250 thank you notes. Most of them are posted in the main hallway by the

ramp to the cafeteria.

Thank you so much for your support. These small comforts of home and well

wishes are greatly appreciated

Dear students and Staff of Carver Middle School, I would like to send out a heart-felt thank you for your thoughts and prayers. We could not do what we do without your support. Kids - you may not know it yet, but your education is the most im-portant thing in your young life, take advantage of all learning opportunities you

can. Staff - you are the true heroes, thanks for all that you do. Wes

Carver Middle School, Thanks so much for donating this Cup of Joe! It is really appreciated. Especially coming from Oklahoma. I am from a small town in Arkan-sas outside of Ft. Smith and Tulsa is only about an hour and a half away from where I live. We actually have about five soldiers here with me from around Tulsa. I am currently stationed in Southern Afghanistan and have been since last July. I should be home sometime around May. Thank you for taking the time to think

about us over here. Take care and God Bless! MSG Will Vaughan

Thank you very much Carver Middle School. This gift, no matter the size, makes the days a little bit better and the mood a little bit brighter! Thank you for your support, it is rare to see and greatly appreciated! Thank you again! To the staff and students, thank you for the cup of coffee. I'm from Joplin just down the road. It made my day when I got this. I never ever forget the people back home and how much you support us over here. I hope your holidays went well. I fly heli-copters, so to all of you students... get back to studying and reach for your dreams. thank you again. Scott

How awesome! I'm from Collinsville. I grew up next to Tulsa. I even brought my TU hat here to wear when I go to the gym. This is by far the coolest thing to happen since I've been here. Thank you so much for the coffee. I really appreciate it.

Dear 7th

Grade Student & Parent/Guardian,

It is hard to believe that the end of the 2011-2012 academic year is drawing near.

The fourth quarter of the school year is always full of schedule changes, assemblies, guest speak-

ers and field trips! There are two field trips being planned for the end of the year: our annual

Video Conference with our sister school in Israel and our end of the year Kansas City trip. We

want all of the 7th

grade students to have the opportunity to attend both of these upcoming field

trips.

Our Video Conference date has been set for May 9th

. After the conference, we will be going to

Incredible Pizza for lunch and the total cost of this trip including transportation, pizza buffet with

drink, and a game card will be $22.00 per person.

This trip supports and enriches our academic curriculum and it is important for students to attend this learning experience. Stu-

dents that attend this academic study trip will be eligible to be considered for the following positive consequence.

The final trip is our positive consequence trip; a reward for completing the stimulating, educational, but demanding Carver Middle

School 7th

grade curriculum. The trip is scheduled for Friday, May 11th

. This trip will take us out of the state to Kansas City, Mis-

souri. The Kansas City trip will involve the following activities: Worlds of Fun to enjoy their “Thrill U Education Day” and then din-

ner at The Mystery Train Murder Mystery Dinner Theater. Once every thing has been confirmed, we will share a more detailed

itinerary. We wanted to inform you of the cost as well as the requirements for earning the privilege to attend this trip. The cost

will be $135.00, which will include transportation, Worlds of Fun ticket, lunch and dinner at murder mystery dinner theater ticket.

Please understand that this trip is approximately 23 hours from departure to return! Permission slip and money will be due by 4:30

pm on Friday, April 20th .

This positive consequence trip is a reward for good grades and appropriate behavior. The following three criteria MUST be met to

qualify to attend this trip:

1.) Students are required to maintain a “C” or above average grade in ALL CLASSES, both core and electives for the sec-

ond semester.

a.) Grades will be updated on PowerSchool weekly to check student’s

progress. A final check of second semester grades will be conducted on Friday, April 20th .

b.) On Friday, April 20th

, if your student has a “D” or “F” in one or more of

his/her 6 classes they will lose the privilege to attend the trip and a full refund will be given.

c.) Please be aware that if your student raises their grade AFTER April 20th

but

BEFORE May 10th

their grade check grade will NOT be adjusted for the

purpose of the eligibility for this trip.

2.) Each student’s behavior record for the school year will be reviewed.

a.) If a student has been suspended (from January 4th

to May 10th

), or has repeatedly (3 or more times during 2nd

semester) visited ISI BUT has maintained the required grade average the following requirements will apply:

1.) The student must be accompanied by one legal parent/guardian.

2.) The legal parent/guardian will sit with their student on the bus.

3.) The legal parent/guardian will pay for their own expenses at the student rate.

3.) Behavior requirements will be monitored until 4:00 p.m. on May 10th

.

grade students to have the opportunity to go on this field trip. We hope you will encourage your child to

strive for excellence. Permission slips will be handed out at a later date. Scholarships are available.

Carver Intercultural Evening (CIE)

April 27, 2011

Friday, 6 to 9 pm

624 East Oklahoma Place

PURPOSE – To raise funds for Carver Middle School while educating and entertaining our students and

their families about other cultures

This fun-filled family evening will feature:

• Tastes from around the world – sample tasty delights from different countries.

• Entertainment – watch singers, dancers and other performers onstage in the auditorium

• Globetrotting Without Leaving The School – get your passport stamped as you visit other countries. Stop

at booths filled with interesting authentic items from other countries: clothing, photos, maps, toys, money and more. It’s a hands-on learning experience.

Please consider supporting Carver Middle School. We need:

• Food donations with a global flare from local restaurants – Mexican, Brazilian, Italian, Russian, Thai, Greek, Jamaican, French, we need it all. Culture boxes • Probably one of the easiest ways to help, a culture box host displays the items which come in the culture box. Educational items are already gathered; all you have to do is review the material, set up the table and talk with individuals as they stop by. You don’t have to speak in front of a crowd and you don’t have to be an expert on the country. • Performers – Dancers, singers, jugglers, whatever talent you’ve got. • Hard-working helpers – Handy on the computer? Artistic? Organized? We have a spot for you. Signs, certificates of appreciation, managing performers, making passports, clean up, Sam’s shoppers, kitchen help. Just say you are available and we’ll find a way you can help.

Remember, this event is a fundraiser for the school, so we are asking for donations at no cost to

the school.

TASTE TICKETS – The cost will be $5 per person in advance. Tickets will be sold in advance through

the school.
