This year we introduced AP Computer Science Principals due to students’ interests in anything involving technology. Students currently have a choice of 8 AP classes. Recent state data shows 43% of our KHS students took an AP course versus the state average of 35%. Data shows 69% of our students went to college versus 55% statewide. KHS also has 8 different Early College subjects being taught this year, over 30% of our students participate (versus 17% statewide) and over 15% graduate High School with more than 6 college credits (this number will continue to increase). Early College classes provide students college credit while still in High School. Starting with the graduating class of 2019, some students will receive a Certificate of Completion from Kaua`i Community College along with their High School Diploma. We strive to use student interest to drive courses that are offered in the elective areas and hope to increase the number of Technology oriented classes in the future. We offer three languages (Spanish, Japanese, Hawaiian) and 35% take Art electives like drawing /painting, ceramics, photography etc. This year we added a “metal works/ jewelry” art elective. Currently, student Lael Bukoski is a finalist for Wyland Galleries 4th annual Art Scholarship. Each year students are encouraged by their art teachers to enter similar artistic competitions and have been quite successful. Seniors will participate in a Financial Literacy “Reality Fair” on September 24. This is an event to start a financial awareness in students regarding life’s realities; especially the unexpected events which cause financial burdens. This will be followed by homeroom presentations regarding financial management provided by students from Mr. Anderson’s business classes. Juniors are required to participate in a Mock Job interview in the spring complete with resume. All these efforts are aimed at providing students relevant non-classroom academic knowledge. Please be actively involved by joining PAIRS-PTSA, following the Kaua`i High Facebook, using the school Web site frequently (Kauaihigh.org) and using the School information portal to monitor your student’s grades/ attendance. Dear Parents & Guardians,

Thank you to everyone for your cooperation and flexibility while we put safety first and took Hurricane Lane’s

severe weather watch very seriously on August 23rd

and 24th. Following the KHS web site “News and

Announcements” (Kauaihigh.org) and our Face book page are great ways to keep up with news at Kaua`i High.

Our Students receive a rigorous and well-rounded education at Kaua`i High; we do our best to accommodate

student interests. This year we introduced AP Computer Science Principals due to students’ interests in anything

involving technology. Students currently have a choice of 8 AP classes. Recent state data shows 43% of our KHS

students took an AP course versus the state average of 35%. Data shows 69% of our students went to college

versus 55% statewide. KHS also has 8 different Early College subjects being taught this year, over 30% of our

students participate (versus 17% statewide) and over 15% graduate High School with more than 6 college credits

(this number will continue to increase). Early College classes provide students college credit while still in High

School. Starting with the graduating class of 2019, some students will receive a Certificate of Completion from

Kaua`i Community College along with their High School Diploma. We strive to use student interest to drive

courses that are offered in the elective areas and hope to increase the number of Technology oriented classes in the

future.

The areas of Music/ Fine Arts are also prominent at Kaua`i High. We have 10 sections of music taught each day

representing about 25% of students taking a Music/Chorus class. Make sure to attend their performance on

December 12 at the Convention Center. We offer three languages (Spanish, Japanese, Hawaiian) and 35% take Art

electives like drawing /painting, ceramics, photography etc. This year we added a “metal works/ jewelry” art

elective. Currently, student Lael Bukoski is a finalist for Wyland Galleries 4th annual Art Scholarship. Each year

students are encouraged by their art teachers to enter similar artistic competitions and have been quite successful.

Seniors will participate in a Financial Literacy “Reality Fair” on September 24. This is an event to start a financial

awareness in students regarding life’s realities; especially the unexpected events which cause financial burdens.

This will be followed by homeroom presentations regarding financial management provided by students from Mr.

Anderson’s business classes. Juniors are required to participate in a Mock Job interview in the spring complete

with resume. All these efforts are aimed at providing students relevant non-classroom academic knowledge.

attendance. Feel free to email teachers with questions (easy via the website). We are a three part team Families/

September 2018 RED RAIDER NEWS Page 3

Proud to be a RED RAIDER ..Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it.. (Swindoll, 2006) In our August Newsletter we mentioned our goals of empowering our students, committing to their emotional and academic well-being, and continuing to foster open communication with our school community. We thank all of you for your support in making this happen. We have spoken to many parents, assisted our students in developing coping skills, and most of all listened to their concerns and celebrations. We know there will be times when our students don’t make the best choices. At Kaua`i High School we utilize ½ hour after school detentions as a consequence for misconduct. Students can serve one detention Monday through Friday after school, or two detentions on Wednesdays and Fridays. It is important that students are responsible for serving their assigned detentions within a week; this teaches them accountability for their own actions. Students who fail to serve assigned detentions may be suspended, lose school privileges, or receive additional consequences for insubordination. As a reminder, students will receive three warnings before being assigned one ½ hour detention for each unexcused tardy. We appreciate your support by monitoring your child’s attendance through Infinite Campus. Please contact a Vice Principal should you need assistance in accessing your Infinite Campus account. We look forward to working together as we nurture responsible adults. See you at our Open House on September 12, 2018. Mrs. Allison Carveiro, Vice Principal-Grade 9
