Happy Labor Day! The summer has quickly come and gone and now here

we are approaching Fall. The Brewer season is waning with playoff hopes

in the future, and the Packers are ready to start their season and the pursuit

of the Lombardi Trophy.

As go the Packers, so we too are beginning our “season”. The budget has

been approved and we are financially very healthy with an excellent plan

and a healthy balance sheet to start our new year of giving. We too are

pursuing our goal of excellence. We will likely fund over $35,000 in

charity giving both to Lions’ charities and community groups. Really,

when you look at it, we as Lions, seem to really like raising funds. This

impression is bolstered by the feedback received from the member survey

and also in the zeal I have seen from our Lions in working fund raising

events.

The Golf Outing grossed around $19,000 – great job Tom Krueger

and Team!

The Chicken roast netted around $9,000 – Bob Lauer and Team –

always a winner!

Gala had its biggest year thus far – Ken George did a fantastic job!

9 pin exceeded its net goal by greater than $1,000 – the Schmitt

brothers…excellent!

The Centennial concession stand was profitable thanks to Frank

Lorbecki

We in turn donate these funds to the groups brought to the BOD for

consideration. In reviewing the budget we give approximately 40% of

funds to the Lions charities and 60% to the community.

Lest we not forget we are a service organization. The Lions have started the

vision screening season in Grafton. We now, with the addition of our Plus

Optic equipment purchased by our Club, can screen faster and more

vision screening outside the Grafton area! Our eye tissue transport serves many people in the

state of Wisconsin. Our prescription bottle recycling program is strong and provides bottles to

the needy all over the world, plus they keep these plastic bottles out of the landfills.

While our club membership is a little lower this year at 95 members, we still are one of the

largest and most successful clubs in Wisconsin. We have a lot to be thankful for.

We do need to take time to ourselves though. Our survey clearly told us that we enjoy the social

aspect of fellowship. We enjoyed the Spouses gathering this year at a different venue. 25

couples attended the event, at the Ale House, which was enjoyed by all. While we didn’t have it

in the park, the indoor venue provided us with a cozy area to socialize during the rain. There

will be more venue changes this year as we try different venues for our gathering and meetings.

Our success is measured by how we serve each other and our community. Get involved in the

committee of your choice and volunteer as much as you like.

Until next month, enjoy the early fall weather and all of the season you can!

RECORD BREAKING SUMMER???

In addition to the record rain and heat in the Grafton area, it appears we have set a record for the

most money raised in our summer fund raisers.

The summer started with a profit of $8,000 for the June Chicken Roast as reported by Chair Bob

Lauer. Ken George, GALA chair, reported a profit of $2,562. John Gassert reported a profit of

approximately $10,000 for the Golf Outing. We are waiting for reports on the total profit from

the Centennial Park Concession stand to add to the total profit for the summer.

LCIF

How is LCIF funded? Donations from 1.4 million Lions in 210 countries and geographical areas

provide the vast majority of the revenue received by LCIF. Lions know that their donations

matter and that the funds entrusted to LCIF will support initiatives that impact communities and

changes lives. LCIF does not receive any portion of Lions membership dues. Donations are

received through Melvin Jones Fellowships and Progressive Melvin Jones. Gifts from

foundations, governments, non-Lions and interest earned on investments also provide funding.

LCIF, like all organizations, does have administrative expenses. All expenses of LCIF are

allocated into three functional allocations: administrative, fundraising and programs. Through

prudent and responsible management of funds, LCIF is able to cover the cost of administrative

and fundraising expenses through investment income. This means that 100% of donations

supports LCIF programs.

LCIF leverages the donations they receive through effective partnerships with other foundations,

corporations and governments on the local, national and international level. LCIF is proud to

have been named the #1 non-governmental organization worldwide with which to partner,

according to a 2007 Financial Times independent survey.

Next month I’ll look at the collaborative partners and how LCIF works with them.

Thank you, Lion Darrel Blank

Recycling Prescription Containers

Under the leadership of Lion Bob Mercer, our club is collecting used prescription containers.

Before shipping them to underdeveloped countries, Bob removes the labels and cleans the

containers. He has already made two shipments each containing approximately 500 containers,

and is working on his third shipment.

Bring your prescription containers to our September 4th meeting. Bob will be collecting them. It

would save Bob a lot of time if you could remove the labels for him.

Several drop off receptacles have been placed throughout the village, including the vestibule of

the Grafton Police Department.

Lions Pancake Breakfast

In conjunction with the ‘Fall into Grafton’ activities, our Lions club will be holding its 10th

Annual Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, October 6th. It will again be held at Atlas BBQ from

7:30 – 11:00 am and Port Washington State Bank has again agreed to be our main sponsor for

this event. Breakfast will include regular or pumpkin pancakes, sausage, applesauce and

beverage (coffee, juice or milk) and will be priced again at $6.50 for adults and $3.50 for

children (under 12). The planning for this event is already underway and the ‘biggest need’ at

this point is volunteers to work this 3 ½ hour fundraiser. We will need at least 15 volunteers

active during the busy times. If you have worked this event before or would be willing to ‘pitch

in’ and help out the morning of October 6th, please let Lion Tom Krueger know. Even if you’re

unable to stay the entire 3.5 hours, any contribution of time would be helpful.

Over the last several years we have raised from $800 to $1,000 with this event and it continues to

be a steady and reliable fundraiser for our club. Please assist us with getting the ‘breakfast’ word

out to family members, friends and neighbors; and of course, all Lion members are more than

welcome and encouraged to join the crowd and enjoy a great pancake breakfast at Atlas BBQ on

October 6th that will include “friendly Lions service – with a smile”.

Recording Service Hours

The Board of Directors has launched a vigorous campaign to collect and report members’ service

hours. In the past, service hours were considered hours spent on Service Projects. But now that

definition has been expanded to also include all hours spent on fund raisers, as well as hours

spent running the club. These are now all considered service hours and need to be reported to

Lions Club International (LCI.)

Third Vice President, Laurie Klos has been asked to accumulate service hours and report them.

All committee chairs should collect service hours and report them to Laurie. Every member who

helped plan and work on any projects this year should report hours to the committee chair. These

projects include:

Golf Outing, Chicken Roast, GALA, Centennial Park, Vision Screening, Prescription

Bottle Collection, Fire Department Picnic, Spouses Social, Strides Walk, Diabetes

Awareness, 9 Pin Tap, BOD Meetings, Cornea Transport, Beer Tasting, Newsletter,

Financial Reports (I am running out of room to list them all. But your get the idea.)
