CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE: There are a whole lot of Public Holidays and long weekends this month and while these may not be great for the economy of the country they certainly are for motorcycling. There is quite a lot happening with Angela’s Picnic, the Century Run and other opport unities for us to get out on two wheels. Why then is it that when we do have a run the turnout is often a little disappointing to say the least. The organizers put a lot of effort and their own resources into setting these up so I would urge you to support them when they happen. It is also the same people in the main who do the organising and my challenge to you this month is for you to come forward with your ideas on what we could be doing and be prepared to organize something too. That way we will meet your needs in this regard and have a lot of fun too. Got that off my chest and now for some feedback on the talks towards a closer association with the VVC. Some of the facts we need to face are firstly that our membership in both clubs is not growing. The numbers are generally reducing albeit by a small margin in both clubs and there is much to be gained by moving the two clubs closer. We have had an introductory and exploratory meeting of both committees and some of the practical issues have been discussed. Where we are now is that nothing will change before the AGM in August but that at the AGM we could be asking for some decisions in regard to a pathway to amalgamation. There are some issues to resolve like the identity of the motorcyclists, finances and meeting but I can give you the assurance that nothing will change without members having an opportunity to have their say and influence the process. Until August at least we remain as we are you will be part of any decisions that are taken. If you have any particular ideas in this regard please make these known to a committee member. Until next month safe and happy riding and keep those old machines going. Ian Holmes

CLUB NIGHT 24 MARCH 2014 Ian Holmes opened the club night meeting @ 8PM. Apologies were forthcoming from Martin Davis, Erhard Langer, Rod Tomsett, Trevor Fraser, Peter Posniak, Rob Pattison Emms, Sean Byde and Grant Wiggins. Ian opened congratulating all those that took part in the DJ this year and presented Gavin Walton with the trophy for motorcyclist of the month and a special certificate for his courageous 2nd place achievement. Of course this does not take away the congratulations to Alan Cuninghame for winning the event! Ian asked for contributions to the kick start magazine. Highlights of the evening were the presentation of an OK Supreme by Hamish; A machine everyone had given up on and thought that it was not worthy of restoration; and in contrast a totally un-restored Triumph Speed Twin from Pierre Cronje. Hamish’s OK actually finished the DJ on its first outing, while The Triumph is proof that ‘barn finds’ are still out there.

Both bikes were started successfully & were well received Prizes of Brandy, wine, chain lube and magazines were won in the raffle There was a head count of 49 people

Editor’s note: Don’t want to sound like a cracked record, but AGAIN I appeal for members to submit stories, articles, and photos – in fact anything you think would be of interest to our readers. No matter how insignificant you may feel your story may be, to others it may well be of great interest. A rebuild, an encounter with an old bike or racing personality. An unusual part seen, just send it all in and let’s see what we can make of it. Address is [email protected]

Past events: Century Run Johannesburg 2014. Report by Rob Pattison-Emms. The Century Run is an informal gathering and run featuring Veteran, Vintage and Classic motorcycles and riders whose combined ages exceed 100 years. The event also caters for Veteran, Vintage and Classic Cars. The event celebrates the camaraderie and fun aspect of vintage motorcycling and motoring. All Marques are welcome and the event takes place on roughly the 100th day of the year. Participants are encouraged to don “period costume” relating to the era of their vehicle. The 2014 Century Run was a great success with a large field of very old (Quality!) flat-tankers and veteran, vintage and classic bikes. A large majority of entrants and spectators turned out in period dress, from 1920’s flappers to 1960’s rockers and 1970’s hippies. Due to a great punt on radio there were several spectators that came from far and wide. This year the Johannesburg Century Run was held again, at “Something Country” in Muldersdrift on the 6

th of April.

The event has always been open to motorcycles, motorcycle and side-car combinations as well as three wheelers. This year we extended the invitation to vintage and veteran cars and were hoping for a few entries from the VVC to swell our numbers. --- Not a sausage! This is probably due to the error on my part, as the event coincided with the date of “Angela’s Picnic.” In spite of a very small entry (disappointing!) we attracted seventeen (17) entries of exceptional quality! A large number of “flat-tankers”, veteran, vintage and post vintage motorcycles. Only two post war bikes made it to the start. But it was the flat-tankers that the crowds came to see. The immaculate and well prepared 1913 Norton BRS belonging to Jeff Frost caused quite a stir! And others, too numerous to mention. Photographers seemed to be more common than bikes, often having to queue to take shots of the older bikes. The people who took the trouble to find period costume made a spectacular scene and enhanced the mood of the event. Simon Mc Donnell took some fantastic pictures that really capture the character of the event. His pictures appear in the gallery below. The Senior Award was won by Fritz Kraehmer totaling a score of 176 years with his 1920 Excelsior Sport. Fritz is also the second person to achieve a platinum award. (175 years or more) Jeff Frost received a prize for entering a bike older than 100 years. (1913 Norton BRS) The Nipper Award was won again by Donovan Wressell with a difference between his age (23) and that of his bike, the 1923 Triumph Ricardo. A difference of 68 years. The Best Dressed Award was won by Tarryn Neary, dressed as a 1920’s Flapper. (And very fetching too!) Amongst the spectators and participants I spotted a few celebrity “lookalikes” the flappers could have stepped out of the film set of The Great Gatsby. A James Dean lookalike --- or was it “The Fonz” from “Happy Days”? --- It could have been his every day “get-up”? (See picture No. 18 on the website) The event was followed by lunch at the venue “Something Country.” Photographs are on the Vintage Motorcycle Club website courtesy of Simon McDonnell and he captured the character of the event perfectly. See here: http://www.vintagemotorcycleclub.co.za/Century_Run_2014_Johannesburg.html As you will see from the entry list and results, on the next page, there were two non-starters. Several people without entries rode along for the fun of it. A good time was had by all.

Odds and Sods: VMC 2015 CALENDAR It's that time of the year to start getting the layout together for the 2015 Calendar. We require sponsors and would appreciate their commitment by the end of July. This will enable Robbie Robson to get the printing done by October and we can mail in November. With regards to sponsors we appeal to new and out of town sponsors for this Calendar as will be seen from all the old Calendars majority of the sponsors have been around for many years. In the last two years we have received new sponsors, we thank them for their contribution but would welcome more new sponsors. This will also make new bikes available, old sponsors running out of material. We thank all who have sponsored the printing of the calendar over the last years. Also a special thanks to Robbie Robson for his enthusiastic input without this the calendar would not be the success it has been. Finally the cost per calendar pages is R2 200.00. This entitles you to 10 copies. Should anyone require additional copies these are available at R600.00 per 50 copies. Please contact: Les Sim on 082 552 04072 email add: [email protected] To confirm your sponsorship and also number of copies you required. Many Thanks The Crags: Classic and sports cars, as well as classic motorcycles are invited to an all new event, at ‘THE Blue House’, The Crags in Plettenberg Bay. Email received from Louis Lusse: Good day Please be so kind and assist me in getting in touch with someone reputable and trustworthy who will be able to assist me in getting a Honda CBX, 1983 restored. Pse contact Louis Lusse [email protected] or Tel: +267 7230 2633 Outstanding Achievement on the DJ. Gavin Walton was given a special award at the last club meeting for his absolutely gutsy and amazing achievement in the 2014 DJ. It is well known by now that Gavin was the innocent victim of a totally freak and horrific accident while sheltering from the rain on his way home from the Pre-DJ Run in 2013. What followed were long periods in hospital for him, countless surgical interventions and a very difficult path to recovery. His handling of this alone would have discouraged many a lesser man. Not content with anything less however Gavin set his sights firmly on entering the 2014 DJ and this he did despite some misgivings from a number of quarters. Just to have competed in this event would have been a huge achievement but Gavin is made of sterner stuff than that. How delighted we were when the results went up to see that he came in second on this arduous run and when he was given his trophy at the prize giving he also received the first ever I have seen Standing Ovation by the assembly. Gavin’s achievement was truly amazing and his peers and fellow competitors recognized this. Special Recognition Award: At the last Club Meeting the VMC made a once off special recognition award to Gavin and the citation on the certificate reads as follows:

This Award is presented to Gavin Walton In recognition of his outstanding achievement in taking second Place on the DJ 2014 following his unfortunate accident after the Pre-DJ in 2013.

This is a unique award for a unique achievement. Again we say well done Gavin you have earned a special place among all of us. Velo Riders progress from Kevin Robertson

Photo of the Velo riders at Cape Point after completing a 14000 mile trip from London to Cape Town on two pre-war girder fork MSS 500cc Velo’s, as I reported at the VMC meeting last Monday. Amongst the Cape VMC members who met them at Cape Point on Sunday 23rd were Chris Cutler and Gavin Allison. (I also met one of the guys on the side of Fish Hoek main road purely by chance ED) The two guys who started off were Tom Berrimar and Richard Harrison. Their route took them to Belgium, Germany, Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey, where they crossed the Mediterranean into Egypt, down the Nile Valley to Sudan. From there, to Khartoum and on to Addis Ababa in Ethiopia where they paused for breath and also to work for a couple of months to replenish their funds. While in Addis, they met a girl (Juliana Pugmire) who wanted to join them so they found a sidecar and persuaded a friend in the UK, also with a pre-war MSS, to join them. Side-car was fitted and the combination flown out to Nairobi together with friend Duncan Ross, so Juliana now had a lift to CT. From Nairobi they travelled down the West Coast of Africa, stopping for a couple of days at Paternoster before riding triumphantly into Cape Town on 23 March. See http://darkstarmotorcycles.tumblr.com for more on the trip. Cheers, Kevin

MACGREGOR MALUTI MEANDER 2014 per kind favour of Terry Illman.

(Not strictly motorcycling bit very interesting)

Oldest entry to finish, Errol John and Mike Altona in an “almost as old” 1967 Alfa Romeo Giulia.

Combined life experience 174 years. Handicap-rallying.

The second running of the Maluti Event took place over the long weekend of March 20th to March 22nd 2014. Judging by the smiling faces and “kuiering” that went on, by all accounts it must have been a good event. All happy to be rallying again. A special word of thanks must go to the marshals staying in the Fleck Street house. No, no, no, for marshalling they get to keep their jobs. On Saturday night they all put in an extra special effort to solve the world’s problems. We discussed “black ops”, the Helderberg, Zuma, watched hours and hours of 1950’s to 1970’s original music footage, solved the e-toll conundrum, Joe verbalised with a real chemist the strange stuff he brews into his beer and how it may solve the Zuma issue.

Along the way, despite Linda claiming that she knew where MH370 is, that one remains a deeeep mystery There were 3 motorcycles on the event this year. Pictured here is Kim Kitchen on his 1982 BMW GS80, who finished with a very low 178 penalties. That time of the year in the Free State. The blomme were out.

KATSE DAM EXCURSION. For those that came down on Wednesday, a drive to Katse Dam in Lesotho was arranged for Thursday. Well worth seeing at least once, the drive proved a long one in terms of time taken and a bit taxing for some of the older cars and even more so for some of the newer ones as well. After leaving the Inn just after 08h00, we found several of our competitors being acclimatized by the local law. Where are your 2 triangles, where is your fire extinguisher and so on, und so weiter. It’s not a requirement in Sefrica…well, you’re not in Sefrica now. Mutter, splutter, fumes coming from under the cap. Then the big shock, the speed limit for a large part of the route is 50 km/h and the taxis stick to it. They still overtake on barrier lines and blind rises and stop for no apparent reason BUT they do stick to the speed limit. Grinding up to the top of the pass, several of the cars needed 1st gear for large stretches of the climb. Several cars ran pretty warm and needless to say, several also had braking issues as a result of the “long and winding road”. There were several casualties on the day, a thrown drive belt, a failed thermostat, a failed fuel pump, this being among the modern cars only. At one point, the pass climbs to 3090 meters and then descends rapidly down to the surface level of the dam again.

The return trip meant a slightly gentler climb back to the top of the pass with the thought of coasting against compression on far steeper and longer descent stretches “homeward bound”. The road is good with just the start of some potholes starting to develop. The evidence of recent rock-falls is a stark reminder of the massif that towers above one on the drive. Some of the recent deposits included rocks bigger than Duncan’s Swift. Friday… On Friday, crews departed the start outside the Fouriesburg Country Inn, heading north out of the town.

After leaving the town outskirts, the route took one out in a South Westerly direction on the R26 in the direction of Ficksburg. Shortly after, the road headed in the direction of Ladybrand and then northward onto the R708 to Clocolan. A short break at the Shell station in Clocolan, exit Clocolan left, zero odo and off again in a Westerly direction, turning almost immediately onto the R708 towards Marquard.

With average speeds of 95 being a feature for parts of the first leg, this was again evident on the second leg. The roads were generally pretty good and supported this average comfortably. The morning session terminated in Senekal with a lunch break at the “Mostertsaaidjie”. 160km covered. The inward leg started on the outskirts of Senekal and very soon turned south east toward the R70 to Ficksburg. The route then went East in the direction of Bethlehem, returning to Fouriesburg via the R711. Distance 122 km, making a total of 282 km for Day 1. Pat is at last going to invest in a new clock. His old one apparently ran 1 minute slow all day on Friday. Strangely it was one minute out to all of the other competitors’ clocks as well as the marshals’ clocks. Cheap Chinese Fong Kong. The usual suspects occupied the verandah outside Johan’s room until supper, making it very difficult to get a word in edgeways unless one had the right kind of shovel. For usual suspects read the “church” congregation. Strange, the church over the road was kept firmly locked right through the weekend, even Sunday. Heck, I know nothing opens in the Free State on a Sunday but that was a bit much. Saturday… With another good day in prospect, crews again assembled outside the Fouriesburg Inn, this time departing town in a Southerly direction.

A short section through the small village and very quickly onto the R711 toward Clarens, the route passed Surrender Hill, so named because one of the Boer forces surrendered there to the Blerrie Khakis on July 30th 1900. Poms 1 Boers 0. The route then turned onto the R712 direction Bethlehem and then more directly onto the N5 toward Bethlehem. Those artillerymen among us who did their military training at 14TH Field Regiment, 141 Battery and 142 Battery will remember well this quaint little town but not with much fondness. We passed through the centre of Bethlehem then followed the R714 towards Warden.

Hier’s ‘n slang in die gras erens. Direction Warden and then turning right and due south onto the R57 direction Kestell we passed through much typical Northern Free State pastoral land, with regular outbreaks of sandstone hillocks and the ubiquitous Cosmos everywhere. Entering The Golden Gate National Park from the Phutaditjhaba side, crews wound their way through the scenic and beautiful sandstone hills, mountains and buttes of the park. Awesome in shade and full or partial sunlight, the park is the jewel of the Northern Free State. Time was allowed in the park section for an optional scenic loop and lunch was hosted at the top of the Blesbok loop.

Departing the park via the Brandwacht gate, the route headed toward Clarens as far as the R711 to Fouriesburg. Returning past Surrender Hill again but in the opposite direction, the score was unchanged at Khakis 1 Boere 0. Sounds like a typical soccer game, where they play for 90 minutes and very little actually happens. (See Terrypedia note at end of report). The finish was once again at the Fouriesburg Country Inn, where indications were that there would probably be no protests as the barman dispensed Windhoek upon Windhoek and some Red Heart and Coke as well. Prize-giving was dispensed with effectively and future tours or trials will no doubt see the keepsake motorcycle number plate, signed by all competitors and officials hanging in pride of place in the Clock and Train Bar in future. Well-deserved too, the food and hospitality were top drawer and the owners and staff are to be congratulated. RESULTS

Assistance required – a THIRD appeal!! The 2014 Magnum is a joint event between the POMC and our club the VMC. We want to make this event special this year and also MUST attract sufficient entries to make the event viable. To this end we would like to create a website which will be a great marketing tool for sponsorship etc, as well as a forum to keep entrants/potential entrants up to date with what is happening etc. In order to populate the website we would like any information anyone may have on previous Magnum events – how the event started, when it started. Notes on any event, pictures, history – in fact ANYTHING related to the event. If you have anything you think would add value please be in contact with [email protected], or phone Andy on 0825534492.

It’s that time of year again, and preparations for the 39th annual Cars in the Park are underway. This show will be held at Alexander Park, Pietermaritzburg on 18 May 2014. The first CITP focussed on what were considered ‘old cars’. However, as time goes by, the show has evolved to include more modern and even brand new cars. Last year a wide variety of different vehicles were on display. What is classified as an ‘old car’ is a rolling date, and to some, even the nineties is 'so last century'! Nevertheless the emphasis will always be on showing ‘interesting’ cars. This year we would like to try something special, and include as part of the showcase, cars that were made in about the same year as their owners became interested in cars! This will be a tribute to the changing times and could help educate the younger generations about the days before air bags, ABS, EDS, Brake Assist, and collision mitigation, when you actually had to be able to drive to be allowed behind a steering wheel! We are often attracted to the cars that remind us of our youth, so we are hoping that some of you have bought back the cars that are about the same age that you are, regardless of your age! Among these cars, we are hoping to see some Pontiacs, Mercury’s and especially an Arrol Johnson or a Trojan. If you own a ‘car of your youth’ please bring it along, and if you feel ‘in the spirit’, dress according to the times! (Be it the times of roaring twenties, Frank Sinatra, James Dean or Elvis). Also bring along period accessories (not just the owners) such as fascinators, walking sticks, portable record players, wicker picnic hampers or whatever else reminds you of your youth. There will be judging and prizes for the best dressed! Not to ignore technology, we would also like to include any fabulous exotica not usually seen on the streets of PMB .like Hotrods and Muscle Cars. Muscle Cars were also plentiful in CITP 2013 and many keen supporters came to admire some superb workmanship, and absorb those spine tingling rumbles. And what would early CITP exhibitors make of the modern Super Car? Owners of such cars are welcome to join us as an individual or as part of a club. We are still looking for McLarens, and a Morgan (e.g. 2013 three wheeler), Lamborghinis, Porsches, Maseratis, Ferraris and any others that are available. These are always popular, regardless of age. The entry process was streamlined last year, and many complimented the new approach, despite the odd glitch. To register this year all you have to do is to tell me, by early April 2014, roughly how many vehicles your group will bring and in which colour coded area you parked last year. I will send you the stickers. We do not need licence plate numbers and such detail. The simple colour stickers will make entry and parking easier for all. We just need to make the zones big enough. The coloured stickers help the marshals direct you smoothly and quickly to your favourite zone. The sooner you respond with attendance figures the sooner we can get the stickers to you. We understand that exact vehicle information may be fuzzy as restorations run over time, and old cars break down, but good estimates make life easier for all. On arrival settle in your display spot, meander down to the registration tent, sign a form, collect a display card briefly describing its provenance, and collect a memento for the day. That’s it. Relax and enjoy the day. Our regular traders will attend, with perhaps a few new ones. The Park Inn will be there along with a sit down refreshment area operated by Rotary. We are also hoping to have a ‘big screen’ showing nostalgic motoring videos to set the mood. With your support we look forward to a repeat of last year’s happy and interesting car show. Feel free to contact me, Fred Rascher, on: [email protected] or 083 369 7020 Hosted by the Vintage Sports Car Club Pietermaritzburg in Association with Rotary Club of Pietermaritzburg.

Terms are strictly cash or EFT and the highest bid received will take it. The trailer is currently licensed and registered to the club.
