Dear Sunrisers,
Can it be 2014 already? Where did 2013 go?
Time seems mostly to evaporate which is a
poignant reminder for us to live each and
every day to the fullest. This gift of life is in-
creasingly like a vapor that is ephemeral,
passing between the grasp of our fingers like
sand sifted through the hands of a toddler.
While all too brief, this gift of life comes from
our loving heavenly Father. What we do with
our lives may just be our gift back to God.
This year will mark my 44th year. 44 in 2014,
that sounds like a lot of fours to me. The
theme of four keeps resurfacing and I am be-
ginning to wonder if God might be calling to
me through the fours of this year. It rhymes to
say more in four, but God must be offering
more than just another catchy slogan in this
time of New Year’s resolutions and promises
not yet broken. What more might God be
offering me in the fours of 2014? What might
God be offering you?
I know many Sunrisers are salaried employees
or business owners and regularly exceed a 40
hour work week. Very few of us may actually
work a 40 hour work week. However, the
numbers work well to consider a tithe of our
work week is may yet be another four. The
Bible implores us to offer God a tithe of our
very best. In fact, the prophet Malachi
equates failing to offer God 10% of our earn-
ings is actually stealing from God (see Mala-
chi 3:8-9). I’ve always assumed this was
about financial resources so I have dutifully if
not joyfully offered God my tithe. What if God
wants more than just my dollars and cents?
What if the prophet is telling us we could re-
ceive more from God if we trusted God with
more of ourselves? For many of us our time is
a far more precious commodity than our dol-
lars and cents.

Continued:
As I’ve been praying I have discerned God clearly telling me that we can all have more. God wants to give us much more this year. God wants this to be our very best year yet. In order to receive from God we need merely to position ourselves to receive. Just as it is impossible to receive love and affection from relatives we never see, so too it is very difficult to receive the good gifts God wishes to affectionately bestow upon us when we are too far from his presence. This year I am asking you to step closer to God so that you may receive more in 2014. I am inviting you into the fours of this year of my life so that together we can position ourselves to receive everything God has to offer us. Set your money aside…we aren’t ready to talk about tithing our dollars and cents just yet. Tithing our money will become possible only after we’ve tithed other important things. I am asking you to give God 4 hours each week. Four hours of your life each week…just four of the 168 hours in each week. Could you give God 4 each week in 2014? Some of us give God way in excess of four hours each week. I am not asking you to do less. I also recognize that this will be a difficult task for many Sunrisers who are already too busy whose time is already stretched very thin. Let’s explore what 4 hours each week in 2014 would look like: 1st hour: I am asking you to give God 1 hour in worship each week. Public, corporate worship. Preferably here at Sunrise but even when you are away on business or vacation, consider giving God an hour each week in worship. 2nd hour: I am asking you to give God 1 hour in prayer and devotion each week. This is private time between you and God. It doesn’t have to be an hour all at once. Just over the course of your week make sure you spend 1 hour with God, undivided and uninterrupted. Just a 5 minute devotion with God each morning will get you more than half way there. Isn’t God worth 8.5 minutes each day? If prayer is like a conversation then all you have to do is add a 3 minute call (prayer) each day to your 5 minute devotion time and you’ll spend an hour with God each week. If you are looking for a good devotion I recommend The Upper Room and they are available in the church narthex this Sunday. 3rd hour: I am asking you to give God 1 hour in study and Christian education each week. This is different from your devotion. This could be Sunday School or a Bible Study or another small group offering through Sunrise Church. We have space in most Sunday School classes for you and I know I have space for you in the Bible Study I teach each week out of my home. I will be working with Lisa Pearson (our minister of adult Christian education) to put together a more comprehensive list of our educational opportunities for you in the coming weeks. You may have a college degree or even a graduate level degree. We are all still learning and there is no more important topic than our faith and relationship with God through Jesus. 4th hour: I am asking you to give God 1 hour in service each week. Jesus told us that when we serve the least, the last and the lost, we are serving him (Matthew 25:40). This means volunteering our time in Jesus’ name. It could be a program like “Warmth for Wake” or “With Love From Jesus” or at “The Holy Springs Food Cupboard” or another worthy ministry God lays on your heart. Knowing about Jesus is meaningless unless we put into use what we are learning. We don’t have to be experts…just willing servants. There! Now we all have a lot of fours in 2014. I firmly believe as we are able to offer God these four (or more…you’re not limited to just 4) hours God will enrich our lives in ways beyond description. Do you want more in 2014? Do you want a better year ripe with more meaning and purpose and direction? God is eager and willing to give us more…much more in 2014! All we have to do to get God’s more in 2014 is take a step closer. I am convinced that if we give God 4 hours, he’ll multiply our blessings just like he did with a lad who offered a few loaves and fishes on a grassy hillside in Galilee many years ago (John 6:1-14). Your partner in more!

recognize the right of all God’s children
in realizing their potential as human beings in relationship with each
other. The purpose of the day is to further the development of better
human relations.
This offering supports Community Developers self improvement pro-
grams, United Methodist Voluntary Services and Youth Offender Re-
habilitation projects.
As a result, lives have been turned around, communities revitalized
and the gospel proclaimed. Your gift to this special offering makes a
world of difference!

“We must rediscover that all reality has spiritual control. It is
possible to affirm there is a God with our lips but deny it with
our lives. Most of us unconsciously leave God behind. He
admonished us to pick up these values so we can move
forward to the New World.” Martin Luther King, Jr. Septem-
ber 9th, 1954
