KHAN The genera belonging to the family Tylen- chidae differ greatly with respect to sclerotiza- tion of the cephalic framework. In Tylenchus, Psilenchus, and Macrotrophurus cephalic scle- rotization is absent; in Trophuriis, Pseudhalen- chus, and Ditylenchus, weak sclerotization is present; and in Tylenchorhynchus and Teloty- lenchus it is quite conspicuous. It therefore appears that there is a gradual evolution of the cephalic sclerotization in the family Tylen- chidae leading to the genera of the families Hoplolaimidae and Pratylenchidae with well- developed sclerotization. Moreover, the pres- ence of two ovaries, large enveloping bursa, large size of phasmids, and conspicuous head sclerotization of the genera Tylenchorhynchus and Telotylenchus show affinities with the members of Hoplolaimidae. Siddiqi (1960) described the genus Telo- tylenchus, which he placed along with Pseud- halenchus Tarjan, 1958 in a new subfamily Telotylenchinae. Loof (1963), rightly ques- tioned the creation of this subfamily as the two genera in question exhibit resemblance with respect to basal esophageal region only, a character not enough to warrant the creation of a separate subfamily. Telotylenchus resem- bles Tylenchorhynchus more than it resembles Pseudhalenchus with regard to the shape of head and spear, relative dimensions of the various body parts, number and form of ovaries, tail shape in both sexes, details of male reproductive organs and the large size of phasmids. Therefore, Telotylenchus is bet- ter placed with Tylenchorhynchus and Pseud- halenchus with Ditylenchus which it closely resembles. Moreover, Eliava (1964) failed to include Telotylenchus, a closely related genus to Tylen- chorhynchus under Tylenchorhynchinae. In view of these facts the subfamily Tylenchorhyn- chinae should better be placed under Tylen- chidae as a link between the families Tylen- chidae, Hoplolaimidae, and Pratylenchidae. An amended diagnosis of Tylenchorhynchinae is therefore presented. Linford and Oliveira (1940) proposed the genus Rotylenchulus which along with Nacoh- hus Thorne and Allen, 1944 was placed in the newly created subfamily Nacobbinae under the family Pratylenchidae. Allen (1960) on the other hand suggested that Rotylenchulus should be placed near Helicotylenchus Steiner, 1945 in the family Hoplolaimidae and that Nacobbus in the subfamily Nacobbinae of the family Pratylenchidae. Similar views were ex- pressed by Siddiqi (1963) with respect to the genus Nacobbus. The authors while generally agreeing with Allen (1960) and Siddiqi (1963) feel that in view of the saccate body of the mature female of the genus Rotylenchulus and the nature of its parasitism, this genus does not fit in the existing subfamilies of the family Hoplolaimidae and therefore a new subfamily Rotylenchulinae is proposed under Hoplolaim- Copyright © 2011, The Helminthological Society of Washington

A New Subfamily, A New Subgenus and Eight New Species of Nematodesfrom India Belonging to Superfainily Tylenchoidea1

The genera belonging to the family Tylen-chidae differ greatly with respect to sclerotiza-tion of the cephalic framework. In Tylenchus,Psilenchus, and Macrotrophurus cephalic scle-rotization is absent; in Trophuriis, Pseudhalen-chus, and Ditylenchus, weak sclerotization ispresent; and in Tylenchorhynchus and Teloty-lenchus it is quite conspicuous. It thereforeappears that there is a gradual evolution of thecephalic sclerotization in the family Tylen-chidae leading to the genera of the familiesHoplolaimidae and Pratylenchidae with well-developed sclerotization. Moreover, the pres-ence of two ovaries, large enveloping bursa,large size of phasmids, and conspicuous headsclerotization of the genera Tylenchorhynchusand Telotylenchus show affinities with themembers of Hoplolaimidae.

From the recent account on themorphology of 68 species of the genus Tylen-chorhynchus given by Tarjan (1964), 45 spe-cies possess inconspicuous head sclerotization,8 species moderately conspicuous head sclero-tization and 11 species very conspicuous headsclerotization. DIAGNOSIS: Tylenchidae: Lip region con-tinuous or set off by a constriction. Headskeleton fairly well developed. Lateral fieldwith four to six incisures. Cuticle distinctlyannulated. Phasmicls large; deirids indistinct;amphids porelike near the lateral lips. Spearwell developed and knobbed. Terminal portionof esophagus glandular, overlapping the in-testine or set-off bulb. Gonads paired, op-posed, outstretched. Female tail short androunded. Bursa enveloping male tail.

TYPE GENUS: Tylenchorhynchus Cobb, 1913.OTHER GENUS: Telotylenchus Siddiqi, I960.

SUBFAMILY TYLENCHINAE DE MAN, 1876

DIAGNOSIS: Tylenchidae: Lip region smoothor striated. Head skeleton slight or absent.Lateral field marked with incisures. Cuticlefinely or coarsely annulated. Amphids usuallyporelike, located near the lateral lips or some-times elliptical slits placed below the level oflateral lips. Terminal portion of esophagus adefinite bulb, sometimes lobed behind andextending slightly over the intestine (glan-dular, overlapping the intestine in Pseiidhalen-chus). Gonad single or paired; if single, shortpostuterine sac present. Tail long filiform ,convex-conoid to broadly rounded or some-times with clavate terminus. Bursa adanal,subcaudal or caudal.

TYPE GENUS: Tylenchus Bastian, 1865.OTHER GENERA: Ditylenchus, Neoditylen-

chus, Sychnotylenchiis, Psilenchus, Macrotro-phurus, Anguina, Paranguina, Trophurus,Chitinotylenchus, Tctylenchus, Tylodorus.

The authors have proposed a new subgenusOttolenchus under the genus Tylenchus Bas-tian, 1865.

Tylenchus subgenusOttolenchus n. subgen.

DIAGNOSIS: Tylenchus: Small sized nema-todes. Body cuticle strongly annulated. Lat-eral field with only two eremite incisures, run-ning parallel to the body til l anus or cloaca.

Head rounded with a slight depression at thebase of lip region, without clear annulations.Median bulb oval. Males with moderately de-veloped distinctly eremite bursa. Spicules andgubernaculum tylenchoid. Tail long and fili -form with acute terminus which is oftenrecurved.

TYPE SPECIES: Tylenchus (Ottolenchus}equisetus n. subgen., n. sp.

MALES (8): L = 0.40-0.48 mm; a = 30-35; b = 5.3-6.3; c = 3,5-4.7; spear = 12-14/A; spicules = 15-17 ^; gubernaculum = 5-6 ^.

DESCRIPTION: Body cylindrical, open C-shaped when relaxed by gentle heat, taperingon both extremities. Cuticle and subcuticlestrongly annulated. Head flat and roundedwith a slight depression at the base of theli p region. Spear with rounded basal knobs,12—14 /JL in length. Orifice of the dorsal esoph-ageal gland close to spear base. Procorpus aslender tube ending in an oval valvulatedmedian bulb. Isthmus long and slender, en-circled by a nerve ring. Excretory pore sit-uated at 68-72 fi from the anterior end of thebody. Basal esophageal bulb pyriform withthree gland nuclei, set off from the intestine.Cardia rounded. The distance from the an-terior end of the body to the center of themedium bulb is slightly less than the distancefrom the latter to the base of esophagus.

Vulva postequatorial with reduced lateraleuticular flap. Ovary single, prodelphic, out-stretched with oocytes arranged in a single file.Oval spermatheca present. Postuterine sacshort, half the vulvar-body width long. Taillong and filifor m with acute terminus, 12-14times the anal-body widths long, tip oftenrecurved. Lateral field marked by two stronglyeremite incisures, running parallel to the bodyupto the anus or cloaca.

Males similar to females in shape and ap-pearance. Body more slender than females.Testis single, outstretched. Spicules paired,tylenchoid 15—17 /j. in length when measuredalong the curved median line, ventrally curved

DIAGNOSIS AND RELATIONSHIP: Tylenchussubgen., Ottolenchus n. subgen. resembles T.subgen. Miculenchus Andrassy, 1959 and T.subgen. Aglenchus Andrassy, 1954. It differsfrom the former in possessing moderately de-veloped bursa in males (bursa absent inMiculenchus) and lip region not clearly an-nulatecl while from the latter in possessingoval median bulb (median bulb round inAglenchus) and only two strongly crenateincisures in the lateral field.

a fusiform valvulated median bulb. Isthmusslender, encircled by a nerve ring near its mid-dle. Basal esophageal bulb pyriform. Cardiaround. Excretory pore 58-63 ̂ from the an-terior end. Hemizonid distinct, situated justanterior to the excretory pore. Distance fromthe anterior end of the body to the center ofthe median bulb is almost equal to the distancefrom the latter to the base of the esophagus.Intestine granular. Rectum very short. Taillong and filifor m with acutely pointed term-inus, nearly fifteen times the anal-body widthslong. Phasmicls could not be seen.

DIAGNOSIS AND RELATIONSHIP: Tylenchus(Lelenchus) minis n. sp. comes closer to T.( L . ) discrepans Andrassy, 1954, and T. ( L . )infirmus Andrassy, 1954. It differs from theformer in the position of vulva, size of thespear and the tail length (tail ten times theanal-body widths long in T. ( L . ) discrepans),and from the latter in the larger size of thebody and position of vulva (V — 57.9% inT. ( L . ) infirmus).

Tylenchus (Lelenchus) cynodontus n. sp.(Fig. 2, E-G)

FEMALES (6): L = 0.39-0.48 mm; a = 26-32; b = 4.7-5.2; c = 4.3-5.2; V = 60-65%;spear = 9-11 ^.

DESCRIPTION: Body cylindrical, ventrallyarcuate when relaxed by gentle heat, taperingon both extremities. Cuticle finely annulated.Lateral field marked by four incisures, occupy-ing nearly % the corresponding body width.Li p region continuous with the body contour,flat and rounded, narrower than front end ofbody. Spear short with small rounded basalknobs, 9-11 ^ long. Orifice of the dorsal esoph-ageal gland close to spear base. Procorpus aslender tube ending in a fusiform median bulb.

Rectum short, nearly % of theanal-body width long. Tail long and filifor mwith acute terminus, measuring nearly 8-9times the anal-body widths. Nearly last Vi ofthe tail dorsally bent.

(Lelenchus) cynodonttis n. sp. resembles T.(L. ) discrepans Andrassy, 1954 but differsfrom it in the absence of males, size of thespear (spear = 7.0-7.7 ^ in T. (L.) discrepans},length of the tail (c = 4.0-4.4 in T. ( L . )discrepans), continuous head and compara-tively more posteriorly located vulva.

Ditylenchus minutiis n. sp.(Fig. 3,A-C)

FEMALES (15): L = 0.35-0.48 mm; a =20-27; b = 4.5-4.7; c = 10-13; V = 72-80%;spear = 8-9 ^.

MALE S (5): L = 0.32-0,38 mm; a = 23-25;b = 4.2-4.7; c = 9-10; spear = 8-9 ̂ spic-ules = 10-12 p.; gubernaculum = 4-5 p.

DESCRIPTION: Body cylindrical, regularlytapering towards both extremities. Cuticlefinely annulated. Lateral field marked byfour incisures. Lip region slightly set off,striated. Buccal spear weak, with basal knobs.Orifice of the dorsal esophageal gland closeto the spear base. Procorpus a slender tubeending in an oval valvulated median bulb.Isthmus long, encircled by a nerve ring pos-

terior to its middle. Basal esophageal bulbdistinctly set off from the intestine. Excretorypore 71 p. apart from the anterior end of thebody.

Vulva a transverse slit. Ovary single, pro-delphic, outstretched with oocytes arrangedin a single file. Postuterine sac twice or slightlymore than twice the vulvar-body widths long,extending half way from vulva to anus. Rec-tum half or slightly less than half the anal-body width long. Tail elongate-conoid withsub-acute terminus.

Males similar in appearance to females.Testis single, outstretched spermatocytes seri-ally arranged. Spicules paired, ventrally arcu-ate, cephalated, 10-12 ^ long. Gubernaculumsimple, trough-shaped, 4-5 ^ in length. Bursacrenate, enveloping less than % of the taillength. Tail ventrally arcuate, regularly taper-ing and ending in a subacute terminus.

HOLOTYPE: Female, collected in October1964, Slide No. 115, deposited with the PlantPathology Section, Department of Botany,Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, U.P.,India.

ALLOTYPE: Male, Slide No. 115-B, collectedwith the female; other data same as for holo-type.

TYPE LOCALITY : Ghazipur, U.P., India.DIAGNOSIS AND RELATIONSHIP: Ditylenchus

minutus n. sp. resembles D. misellus Andrassy,1958 as regards body size but can at once bedifferentiated by the almost straight bodyshape on being relaxed (spiral in D. misellus);more posteriorly located vulva (V = 68.2%in D. misellus); more robust body and shorttail.

Ditylenchus cyperi n. sp.(Fig. 3,D-G)

FEMALES (10): L = 0.50-0.66 mm; a = 18-29; b = 5.2-6.3; c = 17-18; V = 75-83%;spear = 10-11 ^.

MALE S (2): L = 0.46-0.50 mm; a = 22-33;b = 4.5-4.9; c = 15-17; spear = 10-11 ^;spicules = 15-18 p.; gubernaculum = 7-9 ^.

DESCRIPTION: Body cylindrical, tapering onboth extremities, slightly arcuate on death.

Although the specimens of Pseitdhalcnchitsminutus Tarjan, 1958, isolated from around theroots of Brassica oleracea L. differ from theoriginal measurements as given by its author,but in view of the fact that only one specimenwas isolated, it has, therefore, been consideredas geographical variant of P. minutus. This isthe first report of this species from India.

DIAGNOSIS: Hoplolaimidae: Sexual dimor-phism a prominent feature, female being swol-len to kidney shape, male vermiform. Orificeof the dorsal esophageal gland about half waybetween spear base and median esophagealbulb. Females with two ovaries and postmedian vulva. Esophageal glands forming longlobe overlapping the intestine. Male withrather weak head sclerotization, weak spear,and reduced esophagus and with or withoutbursa.

DESCRIPTION: Body spirally curved whenrelaxed by gentle heat. Cuticle distinctly an-nulated, annules 2 ^ apart at midbody. Lateralfield marked by four crenate incisures, mea-suring % of the corresponding body width,outer incisures more distinct than the innerones. Lip region hemispherical, with fivelabial annules, slightly set off, if at all. Labialsclerotization moderate. Spear well developedwith anteriorly concave and posteriorly con-vex knobs, anterior part of the spear slightlyshorter than the posterior part. Orifice of thedorsal esophageal gland more than half thespear length behind the spear base, mea-suring 15-18 ̂ from the spear base. Procorpuscylindrical ending in an oval median bulb withwell-developed valvular apparatus. Nerve ringjust behind the median bulb. Excretory porenear the end of the glandular esophagus.Esophageal glands overlapping the intestinemore than four body annules dorsally, laterallyand ventrally, typically the greatest overlapdorsally. Intestinal portion granular. Rectumdistinct, slightly less than the anal-body widthlong. Phasmids 3—5 annules posterior to anus.Tail convex-conoid with broadly rounded ter-minus, M>—% anal-body width long. Tail an-nules numbering 8—10 ventrally.

DESCRIPTION: Body remains almost straighton death or assumes a slightly ventrally arcuateshape; cylindrical, almost of the same diameterup to vulva from where it narrows uniformlyinto an elongate conical tail. Fifth cuticle ofthe body not very loose. Cephalic frameworkmoderately sclerotized. Lip region continuouswith the body contour, flat and rounded withone or two annules. Lateral field a single line,crossed by transverse annulations and formingrectangular blocks. Spear well developed ex-tending up to 18—20 annules of the body;slightly arcuate with posteriorly backwardflattened knobs, spear tip 45—48 ^ long. Ori-fice of the dorsal esophageal gland 7 /j. fromthe spear base. The whole spear is enclosedby the procorpus of the esophagus which isfused \vith the metacorpus. Isthmus short,expanding to form a pyriform basal bulb.Nerve ring encircles the isthmus. Hemizonidnot seen. Excretory pore 4—6 annules posteriorto the base of the esophagus, i.e., on 38th to42nd body annule.

It differs from //.oostenbrinki in the absence of longitudinallines, hemizonid and the tubular sheath cover-ing the spicules. It also differs in the tail shapeand size of the spicules. It differs from H.typica in the size of the spear, lateral field,male body-width and in having the vulvaunder a folded skirt. From H. iiniformis, itdiffers in lesser number of body annules andsmaller size of the females.

SUMMARY

Interrelationship of the genera of the familyTylenchidae with special reference to Tylen-chorhynchas and Tclotylenchus is discussed.The subfamily Tylenchorhynchinae Eliava,1964 is shifted to the family Tylenchidae forthe last two named genera, which can serveas a bridge between the families Tylenchidae,Hoplolaimidae and Pratylenchidae. The sys-tematic position of the genus Rotylenchidusis also discussed with the erection of a newsubfamily Rotylenchulinae (Hoplolaimidae)for it. A new subgenus Ottolenchus is pro-posed under the genus Tylenchus Bastian,1865. Two new species under the subgenusLelenchus of the genus Tylenchus, three newspecies of the genus Ditylenchus and a newspecies each of Rotylenchus and Hcmicyclio-phora are described from Indian soils. Pseud-halcnchus minutiis Tarjan, 1958, is reportedfor the first time from this country.
