Tips for Keeping Your Fitness Resolutions One week into the new year and already you’ve chowed down on a dozen brownies and missed going to the gym? Don’t be too hard on yourself, but don’t give up on the diet and exercise resolution either. Follow this advice: Be realistic. If you’re trying to drop 20 pounds, don’t try to lose it all in a month. Set your sights on losing no more than a pound or two a week. Set specific goals. Don’t say you’ll exercise more. Instead, commit to walking 30 minutes during your lunch break three days a week. Find a partner. You’ll find sticking to your resolutions easier with a mutual support system. Get together with a buddy who’s trying to accomplish the same goals and give each other encouragement and company. Log your progress. Writing down how much weight you’ve lost, or how many times you’ve gone to the gym in the past week gives you a sense of accomplishment— and the encouragement to keep going. Can you afforda DUI conviction?I t’s New Year’s Eve. You’ve

never had a DUI before andyou don’t think you’ll get

one now.So one for the road? Before you take that drink

and get behind the wheel, tipyour waitress $10,000.Can’t a%ord that kind of tip?

Then you can’t a%ord a DUI ei-ther.There’s a world of grief, ex-

pense, and a lot of time andtrouble with a DUI. If you getone, you are guaranteed tospend the next year or so cop-ing with the consequences. The cost in dollars of a drunk

driving conviction is stagger-ing. Alcohol.org estimates thecost of a drunk driving convic-tion to be $10,000 to $25,000.

But in some states the cost ismuch higher. Here are some of the costs in

terms of money and time:• You’re going to jail. Bailyourself out for $100 to$2,500.• Bail your car out of im-pound: $100 to $1,200.• Hire an attorney. $1,500 to$5,000. Double that for a pre-vious o%ense.• Pay a fine: $150 to $1,800.• Pay for jail time fee: $10-$300.• Pay for sentencing fee:$100-$250.• Pay probation fee: $200-$1,200.• Pay for random drug tests:$100 each time or more.

• Do community service. There goes your free time.• Pay for community servicesupervision: $100.• Pay driver responsibilityfees in some states: $1,000-$2,500.• Attend alcohol and drugtreatment classes. Pay a feefor them from $1,000-$3,000.• Get your vehicle fitted withan ignition lock device: $500to $1,500.• Get your license reinstated:$20-$200.• Find alternate transporta-tion while you are in theprocess.• Breathe deeply when yousee your insurance premiumrise between: $1,000 and$10,000.

Successful relationships are built on a foundation of honest, thoughtfulcommunication. Whether you’re contemplating a business partnership ormarriage, here are some questions to ask before entering into a long- termcommitment with another person: • What makes him/her angry? How does the person deal with anger? • How does the person react in a crisis? • How does he or she handle money? • What does the other person expect from you? What might happen if those

expectations aren’t met? • What are the other person’s goals? • What are three things he/she would like to accomplish in the immediate

future, and in the long term?

Know this before making a major commitment

When and where to pay cash
