A New Year's Prayer
Lord, You make all things new You bring hope alive in our hearts
And cause our Spirits to be born again.
Thank you for this New Year For all the potential it holds.
Come and kindle in us A mighty flame
So that in our time, many will see the wonders of God And live forever to praise Your glorious name.
Amen

January Virtue of the Month –Courage
The virtue of courage helps us to take the initiative to make changes in our lives and/ or to accept changes brought before us. Courage can often lead us to a spiritual awakening and/ or enlightenment. Courage can allow you to shed old patterns, especially those patterns that are harmful to your body or soul. This virtue allows you to reach new levels of being. No matter who you are, no matter what has already happened to you, no matter what you have done, it is still possible to have a “new beginning”.
This January we celebrate the virtue of Courage:
Courage allows us to support others in need
Courage allows us to take the first step in breaking a “bad” habit
Courage helps to build our self confidence and strengthens our connections with others
Ontario Catholic School Graduate Expectations
To support our faith development and Catholic Board Learning Cycle, we infuse our Ontario Catholic School Graduate Expectations in all aspects of Catholic Education from Kindergarten to Grade 12. As a school we work to support a deeper understanding of these expectations and of our witness to faith. To-gether, as a community we work to embed the seven expectations to support the Catholic Education of our students as they journey through our schools through to vocation.

Student Mental Health and Well-Being
Face To Face, Gratitude, and Sleep are each im-portant parts of a Wellness Framework. Some sim-ple practices may include
Face to Face
Try to manage screen time in favor of (real) face time. Track your use of screens and try to increase face time.
Consider a no- screen zone or time at home.
Encourage youth to meet with their friends and discourage the screen as a means for socializa-tion. When we are with our friends in fellow-ship, we are with them, not our screen.
Gratitude
Create a Gratitude practice during your day.
Set a specific time to reflect on your gratitude (e.g. before bedtime, at the dinner table...)
Set a specific number of gratitudes to reflect
Sleep
Create a sleep routine ( set a time to wind down, and get ready)
Slowly add 15 minutes nightly to increase the number of overall hours Use an alarm clock, not the smartphone, wake
up device. No phones in the bedroom.
CSPC
Our next CSPC meeting will be on January 18 , 2018 at 6:30. We look forward to seeing you then!
Try It At Home
Communicating with Children Using Math Language
It is important to help children recognize that everyone uses math all the time. Here are tips to help your child have a positive attitude about mathematics
Make learning math a positive experience. Don’t talk negatively about math to your child—it can lead to “math anxiety” (a proven cause of low achievement).
Schedule math homework at the same time in a quiet location every day. Be available during this period to talk with your child. Create a math homework toolkit with pen-cils, erasers, ruler, protractor, graph paper, counters (beads or beans) and a calculator
When helping with homework, follow the method being taught. Don’t teach short cuts that could confuse your child. Do not say, “Let me show you my way – it’s simpler and faster
If your child becomes frustrated, stop.
