The Central Bucks Hills are ALIVE with
the Sound of MUSICALS!!
There are a half dozen musicals being performed
this month. It’s NO surprise the performing arts are
ALIVE in Central Bucks given it’s home to the one
and only Oscar Hammerstein.
The spring line-up showcases two all-time favorites
from Rodgers & Hammerstein’s - The Sound of
Music presented by CB West’s Harlequin Club and
Tohickon’s production of Oklahoma!
For Disney fans there’s Holicong’s The Little
Mermaid or if your prefer Everlasting Gobstoppers
you can savor Lenape’s Willy Wonka JR.
Well... HELLO Dolly will be performed by the
Tamanend Players and Bye Bye Birdie on stage at
Unami MS.
For as little as $40 a family of 4 can
enjoy the talent of our theater
students in these family classics!

Andrea Closurdo CB East High School Grade 11
Andrea is a junior at CB East. Over the last few years, Andrea sustained multiple
concussions. Her recoveries were long and arduous. She had to give up her favorite
sport of softball because the risk of her sustaining another concussion was too great.
During the summer of 2017, Andrea reached out to Mr. Hadfield (11th grade house
principal) and me to discuss the possibility of creating a concussion support group for
students recovering from concussions. Since the beginning of the school year, Andrea
created materials to advertise the support group and has put together worksheets to
help students during the recovery process. I have witnessed Andrea speaking with
students who are recovering. Andrea meets with the students one on one. She is
empathetic and supportive, and teaches the students strategies to assist them during
the recovery process. This is an impressive skill. Andrea clearly demonstrates her
passion for serving her fellow students by turning her difficult and challenging experiences into a program that
will benefit many students now and in the future.
Danny Kenney Tamanend Middle School Grade 9
Danny consistently places a high value on helping other people. Always on the move,
he lives his life for the service of others. Since 7th grade, he has been involved with
helping students feel welcome. He has worked with our autistic students as part of the
Friends group for years, even going to Bridge Valley Elementary after school last year
to help the students there make friends with our students before they arrived. He knew
middle school would be a big adjustment for them, and he did this simply because he
cared about making these new students feel like part of our school family from their
first day on. Danny helps in multiple musical groups and our musical production, as
well as National Junior Honor Society and our annual basketball shootout fundraising
event. Danny has been featured on FOX29 twice for his participation in school events.
Danny spends hours volunteering at every school event imaginable, especially at our
annual basketball tournament. Danny cares for the younger members in the musical cast each year, making sure
that they are dressed in their costumes and ready to go on stage, all on top of knowing his own lines and songs
as a lead actor! He is welcoming to all and greets each day with his signature enthusiasm. He is always seeking
to help others. He is a remarkable young man!
Gracyn Baker Cold Spring Elementary School Grade 6
Gracyn Baker is the definition of a caring individual. Even though she is unable to
speak to her friends and her peers, everyone who interacts with her knows and
understands she cares for them. She is the first student to stand up and give someone a
hug if she knows they are having a bad day. When her teacher is not feeling 100%
Gracyn will come over pat her on the back, give me a huge smile and a big thumbs up.
This is Gracyn’s way of telling me everything will be alright. She ALWAYS has a smile
on her face and is ALWAYS there cheering someone else up. When working in small
groups Gracyn is the first one to reach out and help a friend who is struggling finish
their work and is the care taker of the classroom. Gracyn Baker started her own way
of saying hello to people that spread through the whole school. She will give you an
elbow bump instead of a high five. Her happy, caring, loving assets are contagious not only in our classroom
but school wide! The fact that she does not have a voice of her own NEVER stops Gracyn from letting you
know she is there and that she cares! Actions truly speak louder than words in the world of Gracyn Baker!!

MARCH’S ASSET TIPS
#21 ACHIEVEMENT MOTIVATION
Research shows young people who try their best in school have better
grades, are more likely to finish high school, and are better at managing
stress. They’re also better at setting goals and more likely to enroll in
college. About 65 percent of young people, ages 11–18, say they are
motivated to do well in school, according to Search Institute surveys. Help
young people understand how important school is so they study hard, pay
attention, and do their homework.
Also try this
In your home and family: Ask your child about what motivates her or him to succeed in school. Find out
what challenges he or she faces and discuss ways to overcome them. Share any tips or advice you learned
from your own school experience.
In your neighborhood and community: When you say, “What’s new at school?” to young people in your
neighborhood, focus on their interests instead of their grades.

This month’s principal spotlight takes place in
Chalfont at Unami Middle school featuring
Principal Christina Lang. Principal Lang grew up
on the west coast in Whittier, California. She
received her bachelor’s degree with a teaching
certification in Elementary & Secondary Social
Studies from California State University Fullerton. When deciding on a career, it took until her
second year of college to realize how much she loved working with kids. She says, “I knew
when I began student teaching that there was no other career for me. I loved it!!!” Mrs. Lang
eventually returned for her Master's Degree in Education from Gwyned Mercy College. She
also spent five years as the House Principal at CB West (2006 to 2011 ) before coming to the
Principal of Unami in 2013. Mrs. Lang believes that “educators have the potential to make a positive difference in the life
of a child each and every day. At the middle level, students are finding their voice and discovering "who they are". I love
that I get to be part of this critical time in their lives. “
If you ask her what advice she would give young teachers, it would be – “Enjoy the small joyful moments in your
children's and students' lives. They grow up so very quickly....don't miss a moment of the journey..”

Community News & Events
It’s time again to recognize a terrific coach in our community. CB Cares in
partnership with Bucks County Orthodontics, proudly present the Positive
Coaching Award which is presented to a coach exemplifies a strong and positive
influence in their players lives.
The Positive Coaching Award was established in 2012 by the Jones family of
Chalfont to recognize a deserving coach who serves as a positive role model,
understands the importance of a child’s well-being and is a positive influence in
the lives of young people.
Specifically, the annual recipient will be recognized for teaching positive life
lessons through sports, providing leadership, and promoting sportsmanship, fair
play, motivation and respect. All of these behaviors and values are consistent
with the 40 Developmental Assets, the framework of CB Cares Educational
Foundation’s programs, and thus Bucks County Orthodontics sponsorship will
continue to bring this Award to the Central Bucks community. Dr. Todd Welsh
has committed to funding a $500 gift to the selected coach who will also receive
a beautifully engraved plaque. The recipient will be honored at a community
ceremony in late spring. For more information about CB Cares Positive
Coaching Award visit: http://cb-cares.org/what-we-do/initiatives/
