Around TownPutting the Beautiful in Downtown Sharon Random Acts of Artists Inc. (RAA) is a nonprofit 501 (c) 3 organization whose mission statement is: “Dedicated to promoting the arts, nurturing the artists and serving the community through open communications and cooperation.” The Flower Garden Gallery, the Choose to Fly mural and the Literary Garden were projects developed and created by member artists of Random Acts of Artists Inc. and partially funded by Project Stream Grants from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.

The Random Interface display in the alley was solely funded by RAA and contributions from the community. Over 50 RAA members artists combined to enhance the City of Sharon by donating their time and talent to these worthy community projects. The RAA Gallery & Art Emporium located at 76 Shenango Ave. inside of Cravings Cafe, is an artists cooperative gallery. Over 25 artists have had their work on display and for sale there since May of 2018.

Bike Lane to Connect Buhl Park and Downtown Sharon

Community and Economic Development Director Melissa Phillips recently announced that the City of Sharon was awarded a $15,000 Keystone Communities Program grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED). The grant, which requires a match from local funding, will be used to hire a consultant who will collectively design a five-year strategy for the city and identify funding streams

to support a downtown manager for marketing and programming, while utilizing the principals of Main Street America™. Main Street America™ is a national program that has been active for forty years. Its approach is a time-tested framework for community-driven, comprehensive revitalization and recognizes that a city’s downtown is its core and a community is only as strong as that core.

The appointed consultant will be working collaboratively with community members, as well as leaders of the city, to better understand the needs and wants of the community and its businesses in order for the city to become a more vibrant economic center. For more information or to donate to the matching grant project, please contact Melissa Phillips at 724-983-3231 or [email protected].

Community Input Sought For Economic Action Strategy

In 2016, the City of Sharon was awarded an STU grant for $658,094 from the local Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for a bicycle lane construction project, which also included funds for new sidewalk/curb/ramp enhancements on Silver Street between North Oakland Avenue and Sharpsville Avenue. In 2019, the physical construction of the new bike lane project will finally begin. Over the past two years, the city has been working to complete design and engineering. The primary project will be a cycle track on Sharpsville Avenue between East State Street and Clark Street. To efficiently and safely connect riders to Buhl Farm Park, a bike lane continues on Sharpsville Avenue between Clark Street and Tamplin Street. From Tamplin Street, riders may connect to Hall Avenue then Thornton; bikers may exit the park and travel Thornton Street, Bechtol Avenue or Hall Avenue. In order to install the bike lanes, the roadways of these designated areas will be restriped. Sharpsville Avenue and Thornton Street, which are two highly traveled roadways that connect to Business Route 62

(State Street), were selected for the installation of bicycle lanes because they lead to the Buhl Farm Park. The designated route will be enhanced for bike travel by use of new signage, pavement markings, traffic calming and intersection crossing treatments.

The city will continue the bicycle lanes to provide functional travel routes within the city limits, as well.

For more information, contact the City of Sharon at 724-983-3231.

WaterFire 2019Sharon will welcome back WaterFire on Saturday, July 27with a beach theme! The temperatures should be just rightin late July to fill the downtown air with music that we alllove–from the style of Jimmy Buffet to the sound of theBeach Boys. “Beach Bash” is sure to attract visitors wholove the sun, the arts, entertainment on the river andmusic that’s just fun!On September 21, WaterFire will step back into the ’80s with “’80s to the Max!” What doesn’t seem like so long ago, the 1980s were full of music from Queen, Journey, and so many classic groups. The ’80s may be the oldies to some, but they’re definitely the favorites to many.
