Influenced by Confucianism, Womenin Vietnam are very much secondclass citizens with minimal powerand status in comparison to men.Therefore they are often at risk ofabuse, disempowerment, anddisplacement within society oftendue to reasons completely out oftheir control.
Vietnam remains a country wheredeep-rooted social and traditionalvalues prevail and women areexpected to submit to the wishes ofmen.
Women who do not fit thetraditional expectations of society,such as single mothers, are subjectto great stigma and are oftenostracized and shunned from theircommunities and wider society.
