VOLUME 8 SEAN SMITH OCTOBER 2009 PAGE 1 OF 4 A Note from Sean Smith Hello, and welcome to the October edition of the exclusive member’s only Empowerment Tips newsletter! This past month in the MMICC, we deconstructed risk and my wife even wrote a poem about it – you’ll get to read it inside. We also got great information in the expert interview on the Fortune in Follow-Up. As we journey into the Fall season, I want to remind you not to let yourself or your business fall. It can get easy to stay busy and distracted by all the activities going on, especially as we head towards the end of this month. Halloween is a great time to pretend to be something or someone else, but the rest of the month, remember to be yourself, to be authentic. I’m sharing pictures of the kids from last Halloween, where McKenna was a beautiful Tinkerbell, and Ecksley was a very cute Superman! She wants to be Mrs. Claus this year, and Ecksley plans to be Spiderman. Cybil & I usually just go as ourselves, and take lots of pictures and try to snag some of their candy. Look for more photos in next month’s newsletter, where the focus will be on gratitude and thanks, as Thanksgiving will be upon us here in the US. For those of you in Canada, enjoy your earlier day of Thanks. And remember to Enjoy the Journey!

A Note from Sean Smith

Hello, and welcome to the October edition of the exclusive member’s only Empowerment Tips newsletter!

This past month in the MMICC, we deconstructed risk and my wife even wrote a poem about it – you’ll

get to read it inside. We also got great information in the expert interview on the Fortune in Follow-Up.

As we journey into the Fall season, I want to remind you not to let yourself or your business fall. It can

get easy to stay busy and distracted by all the activities going on, especially as we head towards the end

of this month. Halloween is a great time to pretend to be something or someone else, but the rest of the

month, remember to be yourself, to be authentic.

I’m sharing pictures of the kids from last Halloween,

where McKenna was a beautiful Tinkerbell, and Ecksley was a very cute Superman! She wants to be Mrs.

Claus this year, and Ecksley plans to be Spiderman. Cybil & I usually just go as ourselves, and take lots

of pictures and try to snag some of their candy. Look for more photos in next month’s newsletter, where

the focus will be on gratitude and thanks, as Thanksgiving will be upon us here in the US. For those of

you in Canada, enjoy your earlier day of Thanks. And remember to Enjoy the Journey!

Ready, Set, Risk! If you’re like most people, you are probably following the mantra, “Get ready, get ready, get ready, get ready, get ready, get ready…” instead of “Get ready, get set, go!” The reason many times is that the Go part of the phrase is a risk.

What’s the Problem with Risk?

What I see very often at my live events and in my coaching is people who know what to do, but they don’t do what they know. When we explore why, we determine that there’s a perceived risk in taking action that overrides the potential benefit of taking that same action. So the key is to get to the point where the benefit outweighs the risk, and then there’s no longer any reason for sabotage. The problem is that we tend to live in our comfort zones, and anything outside of those zones equates to risk. Thus, we’re continually facing risk when we want to do something we’ve never done before. Now here’s where I differ from those who say, “It’s time to get comfortable being uncomfortable”. In my opinion, it’s time to expand your comfort zone. How do you do that? By successfully surviving a risk.

It’s important to understand that whatever you’re trying to avoid by avoiding risk, is usually what you end up creating. For example, if you’re trying so hard to avoid failure that you’re not succeeding, then you end up feeling like a bigger failure. So take that risk, and see how freeing it can be.

Path of Least Risk

When you want something What path will you take?

Will you follow what is there? Or your own trail will you make?

Will you choose the path that’s there?

The path of least resistance… Or at least that’s how it appears When you look from a distance

You see the road – paved & smooth

It appears it would be easy But sometimes there are hidden

Ups and downs that can make you queasy

And often when you follow You find the path will lead

Somewhere you didn’t want to go Because you didn’t read…

The signs along the way

With the warning they supplied That the road wasn’t paved for you

…It was someone else’s guide

The path of least resistance May guide you astray So I suggest that you

Always forge your own way

It will not be the path of least risk Or the path of least resistance

But it is the path of greatest reward When you follow it with persistence

~ Meet Tracy Monteforte ~ “The Fortune is in the Follow-Up”

Tracy Monteforte is a career network marketer, trainer, Master Results Coach and Co-Founder of WTPowers; an online automated support system, helping thousands of direct sales professionals in over sixty countries to succeed in their home-based businesses since 2001. Tracy joined us to share with us what she's fanatical about: follow-up and the importance of leveraging automation to maximize efficiency, effectiveness and profitability. She started off by immediately giving away great advice, reminding us that following up without a personal agenda is immensely important. The power of follow up comes when we put the relationship first and come from the place of ‘how can I serve?’ It is evident that Tracy lives by her own advice. Her company name, WT Powers, comes from WAVE TEAM, which stands for We All Value Each other and Together Everyone Achieves

More. In her company, and in her life, Tracy pursues her passion, where her two favorite activities are prospecting and training. She offered great training on the call, starting out with identifying the importance of follow-up. Studies have shown that when it comes to sales: o 2% of sales are made on the 1st contact o 3% of sales are made on the 2nd contact o 5% of sales are made on the 3rd contact o 10% of sales are made on the 4th contact o 80% of sales are made on the 5th-12th

contact! This becomes even more powerful when combined with these follow-up statistics: o Nearly 50% of salespeople never follow-up o Only 10% make 4 or more contacts To put this in perspective, 90% of all sales are being made by the 10% of sales people who are willing to follow-up consistently! How many sales have you left on the table because you’re not following up? Given those statistics, it’s easy to see how improved follow up can improve your sales. Or, as Tracy said, “following up is the difference that makes the difference.” The reality is, it’s probably not news to you that follow-up is important. So what are the challenges most people face with follow-up and how can those challenges be overcome? Tracy offered some great insight here. There are 4 main challenges with follow-up:

1. Don’t understand it’s importance 2. Afraid of follow-up 3. Disorganized – lack of system 4. Not making the time – “too busy”

So how do you overcome these challenges?

1. If you don’t understand the importance of follow-up, read the statistics again

2. If you’re afraid of follow-up, remember the purpose of follow-up is to serve. Simply offer to help.

3. If disorganization is your downfall with follow-up, then put systems in place to help you get organized.

4. If you’re “too busy” for follow-up, then you’re not allocating time effectively. Make sure to make a schedule and learn how to delegate tasks, too.
