Pardee UNC Health Requests Donations of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Medical Supplies from the Community in Advance of COVID-19

Patient Increase

Hendersonville, N.C. – In preparation for an increase in patient volumes related to COVID-

19, Pardee UNC Health is asking community organizations, corporations and individuals to donate

much-needed medical supplies to help protect their health care workers.

“The risk in caring for patients with COVID-19 for our health care workers is thought to be

acceptable, but only with adequate personal protective equipment,” said Dr. David Ellis, chief

medical officer. “Pardee currently has adequate supply, but like so many health care systems, we

anticipate that will likely not be the case in the coming weeks.” Pardee notes that their materials

management and emergency preparedness teams took swift action early on to secure orders and

source supplies, resulting in currently adequate levels.

Pardee is conserving key supplies and is prepared to play a significant role in our communi-

ty’s response to COVID-19 but recognizes that a prolonged period of care will be challenging with-

out additional medical supplies – currently in short supply throughout the country. “Community

support will help Pardee extend our ability to provide care,” said Ellis, “particularly as our hospital

starts to see an influx of critically ill patients affected by coronavirus.”

Many generous individuals, nonprofits, private companies and others have already reached

out to offer support. Currently, the biggest need is additional Personal Protective Equipment (PPE),

and sanitizing and disinfecting supplies. Pardee recently received a donation of N95 masks from

Stand T.A.L.L. “We are extremely grateful to Ron Kauffman and Stand T.A.L.L.,” said Ellis. “I have

no doubt that there are other businesses and organizations in our community with supplies that

could be beneficial in the coming weeks.”

Pardee UNC Health will consider any of the following items for donation:

Personal Protective Equipment

· Surgical masks

· N95 masks

· Goggles or safety glasses

· Face shields

· Gowns/ suits

· Gloves

· Shoe covers

Sanitation/ Disinfection

· Lysol/ other disinfectant spray

· Clorox wipes

· Hand sanitizer

Donations can be dropped off at the Pardee Hospital Foundation building located at 561

Fleming Street in Hendersonville. Please call ahead at 828-233-2721 so that staff can arrange for

effective social-distancing measures when retrieving your donation.

Pardee UNC Health is a not-for-profit community hospital founded in 1953 and is managed

by UNC Health. The hospital is licensed for 222 acute care beds. Pardee has several locations sep-

arate from the main campus, including a comprehensive physician practice network, a cancer cen-

Inside Pardee - February’s program

Bridget Barron, Nursing Director /PATHS presented a comprehensive overview of Pardee Hospital’s Psychiatric and Addictions Therapeutic Healing Service program to attendees at the February Inside Pardee.

PATHS is a 21 bed unit serving both men and women 18 and over who voluntarily or involuntarily need psychiatric or addiction treatment. The average length of stay is five days and PATHS treats an average of 20.9 patients daily.

Some areas of treatment for diseases of the mind include: Bipolar disorder. Major depressive disorder (with suicidal ideation). Substance dependence. Schizophrenia. Anxiety disorders.

Getting professional treatment quickly is the key to preventing depression from worsening and from leading to complications. A doctor can initially rule out other possible causes of depression-like symptoms, such as illness or medication.

Nationwide, one out of approximately five patients admitted to a hospital has a problem with alcohol. 14.4 million adults have Alcohol Use Disorder and an estimate 88,000 people die from alcohol-related causes annually, making alcohol the third leading preventable cause of death in the United States. More than 10 percent of the children in the country live with a parent with alcohol problems. Alcohol consumption increases the risk of cancers of the mouth, esophagus, pharynx, larynx, liver, and breast.

The inter-professional communication and collaboration with health care workers through-out Pardee provides a safety net for people in a behavioral health crisis. The behavioral health staff works closely with the Emergency Department staff.

The professionals in Pardee Hospital’s PATHS unit participate on state and local task forces. They also participate in a community outreach program to offer assistance in the areas of: Stress Management/Depression—Education for local businesses. Anti-Bullying— Programs for local schools. Addiction/substance abuse—Education for management in business and industry.

For more information, contact Pardee Hospital PATHS at 828-696-4250.

The Inside Pardee programs for April and March have been cancelled. We hope to resume with the

Friday, May 22nd Program—the fourth Friday in May.

Pardee Hospital Foundation April 2020

THANK YOU for the generous gifts received in response to our 2020 Doctors’ Day campaign. If you haven’t already participated by recognizing your doctor with a gift to Pardee Hospital Foundation… ANY TIME IS A GOOD TIME TO GIVE!! Please consider supporting our community’s health by hon-oring your favorite physician or physician’s group.

What a great way to say “THANK YOU” by making a tribute gift to Pardee Hospital Foundation. Without you, the Foundation would not have been able to fund crucial enhancements that set Pardee apart and rank your community hospital among the highest rated hospitals in the United States, provid-ing state-of-the-art medical care for the residents of Henderson County and the surrounding region.

More than 322 physicians, representing 37 medical specialties and 127 allied health areas call Pardee home. They are drawn to Pardee for its advanced technologies, high level of services and exceptional care in a small community environment. Your charitable gifts will be used to save lives by purchas-ing life-changing medical equipment and funding programs that help Pardee Hospital continue to provide advanced compassionate care for you, your family, neighbors and friends.

Doctors’ Day was first observed on March 30, 1933 in Winder, Georgia. Eudora Brown Almond, wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond suggested the date as it commemorated the first use of ether as a general anesthesia in surgery on March 30, 1842 by Dr. Crawford Long in Jefferson, Georgia enabling Dr. John Collins Warren to surgically remove a tumor from a patient’s neck. In 1990, the United States Senate and House of Representatives designated Doctors’ Day as a national holiday to be celebrated on March 30.

A special thank you to our Corporate Partners who have each made an annual commitment in support of

Pardee Hospital.

Garden café workers, greeters and in patient care. Next time you see a Pardee

volunteer in a blue jacket, thank them for their service!
