1. Martha is Mrs. Medlock’s servant (housekeeper) 2. She never has had to dress herself before…her servants or

Ayah always did it. 3. She thought that Mary would be a native (dark colored skin) 4. She tells her the gardens are not blooming right now. She

also tells her that one of the gardens has been locked up for 10 years.

Chapter 5

1. She says that it must be the wind or the scullery maid who has had a toothache.

1. She was curious about the house and the “hundred of rooms and doors it might have.” She finds little ivory elephants.

Chapter 8

1. She gives Mary a skipping rope. Mary is very overcome with the generosity but doesn’t know quite how to respond. She says thank you and shakes Martha’s hand.

2. Finding it and finding a way in was like Magic and her Ayah’s stories always had a bit of magic in them.

3. The robin showed her where the key was and the wind and the robin both showed her where the door was.

Chapter 9

1. It was mysterious and overgrown. There were bushes, vines and trees everywhere. They were tangled together and filled with place. They were mostly brown and dead looking but you could tell they would be alive again in Spring.

2. She has money from Mrs. Medlock. She is going to give the money to Dickon and ask him to buy tools and seeds.

3. She thinks it is strange because people with suddenly come and go and she can always hear a strange crying sound.

Chapter 10

1. One possibility is : “He’s as full o’ pride as an egg’s full o’ meat.”

2. He has a way with animals and is soft spoken. He is also a curly red headed boy who is outdoorsy.

3. She smiles more often, she is stronger, can run raster and has more endurance. She likes to be outside now.

2. They did pruning, digging, cleaning up, trimming, etc.

Chapter 12

1. She knows all about children. 2. He agrees to: not give her a governess, let her go to the

Sowerby’s cottage and that she may have a bit of earth to plant things in and grow things.

Chapter 13

1. Colin Craven, Mr. Craven’s son 2. He is very spoiled, does not see his parents often, is cared

for by servants, has not done normal childlike things (played with other children, run around outside, etc.)

Chapter 14

1. He is kept in bed because everyone is afraid he is ill and will have a lump in his back or crooked legs.

2. A rajah is like a king and Colin is like one because he orders everyone around and thinks he is in control.

1. He was crying and screaming all at once. He was hysterical and out of control. He was beating his face in his pillow.

Chapter 21

1. Only now and then does anyone know that they will live forever and ever.

1. They are working on making the garden nice and helping Colin learn to walk.

2. He worked on the vegetable gardens around their cottage. 3. A cheerful attitude or being around happy things will often

help people feel better. Some things are: fresh air, exercise, company of others, sunshine

4. They decided to eat less (eat more but in secret), practiced muscle exercises that Dickon showed them, and start being kind to others.

5. She describes her as pretty, with thick hair and bright color.

Chapter 26

1. He discovers that he is well. 2. “Praise God from who all blessings flow” 3. Dickon’s mother comes to visit them.

14. She sends food secretly to them so that they can have extra nourishment.
