ADAPTED FROM VARIOUS ORTHODOX SOURCES / INFORMATIONS TIRÉES DE PLUSIEURS SOURCES ORTHODOXES

HOLY UNMERCENARIES (meaning unmaterialistic or non-commercial. In Greek the term is anargyroi, meaning ‘’no silver“) is an epithet applied to a number of Christian saints who did not accept payment for good deeds. These include healers or Christian physicians who, in opposition to medical practice of the day, tended to the sick free of charge. Out of pure love of God and neighbour, they healed the sick and mended the souls of others while asking nothing in return—a pure self-sacrifice born out of love. The UNMERCENARY HEALERS were not self-serving. They had no ulterior motives. Rather, they showed a Christ-like love for all, and they gave themselves for all. Dubbed the “UNMERCENARIES” for their refusal to accept money for their services, they also came to be acknowledged as miracle or wonder workers for the remarkable cures they were able to effect. They fulfilled Christ’s command: “Freely have you received; freely give” (Mat 10:8).

As they healed in the name of Christ, the HOLY UNMERCENARIES preached the Gospel with the hope that souls and bodies would be healed unto the abundant life and salvation through God’s grace. In their lives on earth, these physicians worked to heal all without concern for gain, and who since their repose continue to heal by their prayers those who call upon them in faith.

Among those Great Saints are Cyrus and John, Tryphon, Artemius, and the others, as well as Cosmas and Damian, and the martyr and healer Panteleimon.

The HOLY UNMERCENARIES are invoked in the service of Holy Unction. Hymns to them are traditionally chanted after the service while the faithful receive the Holy Oil.

We have Returned to Church

With great joy and thanksgiving, we returned to Church this past Sunday and Monday. This week we will celebrate the Orthros (9:05am) and the Divine Liturgy (10:30am) on Sunday morning and the Divine Liturgy this Tuesday evening (6:30pm). Attendance at Church Services is by registration only.

While we worked long and hard to prepare the Church for your return, I was especially pleased at how well our

parishioners returned to Church with great piety, thanksgiving, and respect for the Church, Her services, and the protocols we have set. We thank you all for your excellent cooperation in helping to keep each other safe during this pandemic. Please note that we have marked the center and side isles as you come down for communion, so you may maintain social distancing while approaching the chalice. Once again, we are still limited to just fifty (50) people including our clergy, servers, chanters, and ushers. This means that you will need to plan and register in advance for each service and agree to fully follow the established guidelines outlined in the registration process. Please note only those who are registered and bring proof of registration may attend each service. All family members on your registration confirmation must arrive together. Our services again this week were booked to capacity (Sunday within minutes of registration opening and Tuesday almost one week ahead of the service) so please register early. If you were able to attend Liturgy this Sunday, please wait until Tuesday morning before trying to register for next Sunday’s Liturgy to give others a chance to come on a Sunday.

THE EPISTLE

Brethren, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,

faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such there is no law. And those who

belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we

live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. Let us have no self-conceit, no

provocation of one another, no envy of one another. Brethren, if a man is overtaken

in any trespass, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness.

Look to yourself, lest you too be tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill

centurion answered Him, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof;

but only say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I am a man under

authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to

another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” When

Jesus heard him, He marveled, and said to those who followed him, “Truly, I say to

you, not even in Israel have I found such faith. I tell you, many will come from east

and west and sit at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the Kingdom of

Heaven, while the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness; there

L’ÉPÎTRE

La Lecture de l’Épître de Saint-Paul aux Galates. (5:22-6:2)

Mais le fruit de l’Esprit, c’est l’amour, la joie, la paix, la patience, la bonté, la

bienveillance, la foi, la douceur, la maîtrise de soi; la loi n’est pas contre ces choses.

Ceux qui sont à Jésus-Christ ont crucifié la chair avec ses passions et ses désirs. Si

nous vivons par l’Esprit, marchons aussi selon l’Esprit. Ne cherchons pas une vaine

THE SYNAXARION

On July 5 in the Holy Orthodox Church, we commemorate our Venerable and

God-bearing Father Athanasius of Athos, and his six disciples who died with

him.

Verses

Anthony the Great was the inception of the Fathers,

And divine Athanasius, their godly culmination.

On the fifth, Angels took Athanasius and his disciples to the City of God.

Born in Trebizond of God-fearing parents, he was early left destitute, but, by

the providence of God, a high-ranking army officer took him to Constantinople

and educated him there. Finishing his schooling, Athanasius eventually moved

to the Holy Mountain to live in silence and strict asceticism. Many, desirous of

the ascetic life, began to gather round him and he was constrained to build the

famous Lavra. The Byzantine Emperors gave him generous help in this.

Manifold temptations came upon Athanasius, from demons and from men, but

he, as a valiant soldier of Christ, resisted and overcame them all by his

immense humility and unceasing prayer to the living God. Filled with the grace

of God, he was found worthy to behold the most holy Mother of God, who

miraculously brought forth water from a rock. Death came to him suddenly in

1003. He, together with six of his monks, had climbed up onto a newly-

constructed part of the church to inspect a wall that was in building when the

wall fell in and buried them all. Athanasius appeared a number of times to his

brethren after his death, to console or rebuke them.

On this day, we also commemorate the Venerable hieromartyr Cyprian of St.

George kelli on Athos; Venerable Lampados of Irenoupolis; the 23 martyrs of

Lesvos; and Venerable Sergios the wonderworker of Radonezh. By their

intercessions, O Christ God, have mercy on us. Amen.

SAINTS ANARGYRES

SAINTS ANARGYRES (GR anárgyroi) est une épithète signifiant littéralement « sans argent »: elle qualifie les saints thaumaturges (ceux qui font des miracles) qui, contrairement aux médecins, n’acceptaient aucun paiement pour leurs services et attiraient par leurs actions un grand nombre de gens à la foi chrétienne.

Ayant reçu gratuitement la grâce du Saint-Esprit grâce à laquelle ils pouvaient chasser les esprits impurs et guérir toutes sortes de maladies sans autre remède que leur prière, ils soignaient sans aucune distinction les riches comme les pauvres, les étrangers comme leurs proches, sans jamais demander la moindre somme d’argent. On accourait de tous les horizons vers eux et chacun y trouvait guérison et réconfort dans la mesure de sa foi. Ils accomplissaient ainsi le commandement du Christ: « Vous avez reçu gratuitement, donnez gratuitement » (Mt 10,8), et démontraient un amour semblable à Christ pour tous.

Alors qu’ils guérissaient au nom du Christ, les SAINTS ANARGYRES prêchaient l’Évangile avec l’espoir que les âmes et les corps seraient guéris pour la vie et le salut éternels par la grâce de Dieu. Sur terre, ces médecins ont travaillé pour guérir tous sans souci de gain, et depuis leur repos dans Le Christ, ils continuent de guérir par leurs prières ceux qui les invoquent avec foi.

Parmi ces SAINTS ANARGYRES nous retrouvons saints Côme (ou à l’ancienne Cosme) et Damien, saints Kyros et Jean, et Sampson, et saint Pantéleimon.

Les SAINTS ANARGYRES sont invoqués au service de la Sainte Onction. Des hymnes en leur honneur sont chantés après le service pendant que les fidèles reçoivent l’huile sainte.

Christ est le seul vrai médecin, mais nous ne pouvons être guéris que si nous permettons à Sa lumière d’entrer au fond de nous, dans les endroits les plus sombres et les plus cachés.

يتابعون شفاء الذين يلجؤون إليهم بإيمان.

كان من بين هؤالء القديسين العظماء كل من د سيروس ويوحنا وتريفون وأرتيموس وآخرون باإلضافة إلى القديسين كروزمرا ودمريران والشرافري الشهيد بنداليمون.

في خدمة صالة الزيت المقدس، و ترتل الطروباريات الخاصة بهم عادة بعد الخدمة أثناء مسح المؤمنيرن برالرزيرت الماقتو الفضة يذكر القديسون المقدس.

إن المسيح هو الطبيب الحقيقي ولكن ال يمكننا أن نشفى إن لم نسمح لنور المسيح أن يخترق األماكن المخفية والحالكة السواد في كياننا.
