Psalm 90.15-16 COMMUNION ANTIPHON One does not live on bread alone, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of the Lord. Matthew 4.4 1st Reading: Deuteronomy 26.4- 10: Moses instructs the people to remember who they are each time they bring their offering to the altar. They must bring to mind how they were enslaved in Egypt, how the Lord heard their cry and how he brought them out of bondage to the land flowing with milk and honey. Response to the Psalm: Be with me, Lord, in my distress. 2nd Reading: Romans 10.8-13: Paul explains the assurance our faith brings. If we believe in our hearts and confess with our tongues, then we are saved. There is no distinction among us for everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. Praise to you, O Christ, king of eternal glory! We do not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. Praise to you, O Christ, king of eternal glory! Luke 4.1-13: Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus is put to the test in the wilderness. From his baptism, we know that Jesus is the Son of God. Here he is portrayed in the fullness of his humanity. The entire life of Jesus shows that humanity and divinity are profoundly connected. The more human we become the more we share in the life of God himself. And Jesus shows that we become more human by dying to the self. ———————————————————————————————————————————————– 1st SUNDAY OF LENT 9th-10th March 2019 Year C Please take a copy of the Lent information sheet if you haven’t already done so. SUNDAY TAKEAWAY: Lent is not a project of self-improvement. Rather, it’s a time of allowing God to transform us. Lent is a time of intentional cooperation with God’s graces, where God leads and we follow, like a good dance partner. We can choose to follow or not, but God is always in the lead. What might this look like in practice? The answer will be individual for each one of us, and so a Lent of following God’s lead must be grounded in prayer. We can listen for the voice of God and let ourselves be surprised by what the call in Lent might be. Perhaps we not only contribute to our paper rice bowls with alms for the poor, but also feel God calling us to undertake service work where we build relationships with a community of people out-side our comfortable social circles. Or maybe fasting this year means not only the obligatory fasts, but also fasting from judgment when I do not know the inner workings of another’s heart. Perhaps God is calling me to add in a different form of prayer: a few minutes of silence on my lunch break at work, or praying as a family just before the children are tucked into bed. Marina McCoy

Please pray for our sick and housebound. A Prayer to Christ the Healer In the comfort of Your love, I pour out to You, My Saviour the memories that haunt me, the anxieties that perplex me, the fears that stifle me, the sickness that assails me and the frustration of all the pain that weaves about within me. Lord, help me to see Your peace in my turmoil, Your compassion in my sorrow. Your forgiveness in my weakness, and Your love in my need. Touch me, Lord, with Your healing power and strength. Amen.
