The Triodion Period

Three weeks before the Great Lent

begins, the Church enters a new liturgical

period when the religious services have a

deeper interior vibration of man’s return to

God. Triodion, the name of this period derives

from the name of the service book used in the

church preeminently from the Sunday of the Publican and

Pharisee to the threshold of the feast of the Holy Pascha.

This title comes from the three odes of repentance

aded to the morning service. Other similar liturgical

books guide the worship for the remainder of the year and

they are named Penticostarion (from Pascha to Pentecost)

and The Great Octoechos (from Pentecost to the next

cycle of Triodion)

One could ask what does the entrance into this

period mean for the regular faithful. First of all we should

keep in mind that the begining of Triodion is the gong that

calls to change and readiness to begin Great Lent. Given

the fact that the latter is the most significant time of

repentance of the year and aiming to experience a true

fasting we must carefully begin our preparation.

Otherwise even the first three Sundays of Triodion set the

tone for the spiritual change to which we are called. They

are: the Sunday of the Publican and Pharisee; the

Prodigal Son and Forgiveness Sunday. Our

transformation is based on repentance, which is the

knowledge and decrying of our own sins. To enable us get

ready for the great approaching time of abstinence, on the

first week of Triodion (the week of Feb. 17), dispensation

to meats, eggs and dairy is granted. Hence we realize that

during the first three weeks of Triodion we should clean

up our refrigerators of any non lenten foods.

As we will advance toward Lent (March 11th) we

may notice that the church observes the Memorial

Saturdays which will last until Lazarus Saturday.

Triodul - Cartea neștiută și uitată

Triodul este cunoscut atât ca o carte de cult,

cât și ca o perioadă liturgică a anului bisericesc.

Triodul ca și carte de cult, cuprinde cântările,

citirile și regulile tipiconale din perioada liturgică

a Triodului. Denumirea carții provine de la

numărul odelor (cântărilor) din canoanele

utreniei acestei perioade. Spre deosebire de

canoanele cuprinse în Octoih și Minei, formate din opt (nouă)

ode, în Triod sunt numai trei.

Perioada Triodului este structurată în 3 săptămâni/ 4 duminici

de pregătire pentru Postul Sfintelor Paști (Duminica Vameșului

și a Fariseului; Duminica Fiului Risipitor; Duminica Înfricoșatei

Judecăți - numită și Duminica lăsatului secului de carne;

Duminica Izgonirii lui Adam din Rai, numită și Duminica

iertării sau Duminica lasatului secului de brânză) și 7 săptămâni/

6 duminici ale Postului Mare (Duminica Ortodoxiei, Duminica

Sfântului Grigorie Palama, Duminica Sfintei Cruci, Duminica

Sfântului Ioan Scărarul, Duminica Sfintei Maria Egipteanca și

Duminica Floriilor).

Cântările Triodului au fost compuse, în cea mai mare parte,

după dispariția catehumenatului. Accentul cântărilor se

concentrează deci nu asupra Botezului ci asupra Pocăinței.

Necunoașterea Triodului ne lipsește de o adevarată înțelegere a

Postului. Pentru Părinți, ca și pentru autorii Triodului, consecința

esentială a căderii lui Adam și a izgonirii sale din rai este

moartea: stricăciunea și caracterul pătimaș legate de acum de

natura umană. Frunzele de smochin cu care Adam încercă să-și

ascundă rușinea și "hainele de piele", pe care Dumnezeu i le-a

dat prin milostivirea Sa, desemnează grosimea trupului menit

acum morții.

Postul Mare se deschide în Duminica Lăsatului de branză cu

imaginea lui Adam șezând în lacrimi în fața porților raiului.

Dacă în trecut porțile raiului au fost închise din cauza

neînfrânării, dar deschise prin Cruce și Înviere, ele se deschid

pentru fiecare din cei ce intră pe calea căinței și a întoarcerii în

rai cântând în toate duminicile Triodului. De-a lungul întregului

Post, opoziția smereniei vameșului cu mândria și lauda de sine a

fariseului este accentuată în cântări, pe cand fățărnicia este

Triodul - Cartea neștiută și uitată

Dar atunci care este adevăratul Post? Triodul răspunde: este,

întâi de toate, o curăție interioară. Este, de asemenea, o

întoarcere la iubire, o luptă împotriva "vieții distruse",

împotriva urii, nedreptății, invidiei.

Centrat pe căință și pe efortul întoarcerii, Triodul insistă

îndeosebi asupra descrierilor iadului și a suferințelor celor

osândiți, pentru a îndemna pe credincios la străpungerea

inimii: "Plâng și mă tânguiesc, când îmi vine în simțire focul

cel veșnic, întunericul cel mai din afară și tartărul, viermele

cel cumplit și scrâșnirea dinților cea neîncetată și durerea ce

va să fie celor ce au greșit peste măsură". Amintirea păcatelor

și frica la gândul Judecății îl fac de altfel să implore cu atât

mai fierbinte pe Hristos să-l cruțe și să-i dea harul căinței

înainte de a fi prea târziu: "Drepte Judecătorule,

Mântuitorule, miluiește-mă și mă izbăvește de foc și de

groaza ce am a petrece la judecata după dreptate; iartă-mă

mai înainte de sfârșit prin virtuți și pocăință!".

Înainte ca "sărbătoarea vieții" să se sfârșească și ușile

cămării de nuntă să se închidă, creștinul trebuie să se

grăbească pe singura cale cu putință pentru întoarcerea în rai:

asceza, însoțită de căință, de lacrimi și de faptele milosteniei.

Triodul - Cartea nestiuta si uitata! Dacă știm că există,

putem regăsi prin el nu numai duhul Postului, ci și duhul

Ortodoxiei însăși, duhul viziunii sale pascale asupra vieții,

morții și veșniciei.

The Triodion Period

I urge all faithful to offer Parastas during such days, which

is more pleasing to God, and not on Sunday which is the

day of the Resurrection. Therefore the first three weeks of

Triodion help us get ready for Lent. Notice that Lent

begins on Forgiveness Sunday, when we are called to

reconciliation even to our enemies. Even though the Great

Lent will only begin on March 11, the Triodion calls us to

a gradual spiritual and bodily fitness. May God help all of

us!

Love was all around us this past week - heart shaped candies, heart shaped cards, heart shaped cookies. Red roses, romantic dinners, sparkling champagne. Love was in the air and everywhere you looked!

Yet, too often it seems, the love we celebrate on Valentine’s Day is a commercial enterprise that has more to do with buying than with loving! And it is just one short day! What about the other 364 days when love is so often forgotten?

Did you know that the word “love” is mentioned 310 times in the King James Bible? The word “Heart” appears 725! Added together, that is 1035 times that “Love” and “Heart” appear in the Bible, sometimes separately, other times in the same verse. Only “God” and “Lord” appear more frequently! There is an expression in neuroscience that says “cells that fire together, wire together,” meaning that cells that are activated at the same time form linked circuits of activity. From that perspective, “God” and “Lord” and “Love” and “Heart” are linked together in our hearts and minds in a perpetual flow of divine love. But do we allow that love into our hearts? Do we throw open the gates and invite it in? Or do we shutter them tightly and barricade ourselves inside self-made prisons of hatred, anger, jealousy, resentment, or fear?

Why do we not break down those walls and throw open the gates so that God’s love can enter every corner of our heart? How much happier we would all be! How much suffering we would avoid! As St. Paul said, “Love is patient, love is kind. Love does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 1Corinthians 13:4-7

There are 1035 references having to do with “love” and “heart” in the Bible - that is almost 3 for every day of the year! If we read only those 3 verses and let them guide our actions and decisions for that day, how fortunate we would be and how light our burdens!

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:34-35 We are all disciples, and as such, we are ambassadors of our faith. Others see our actions, and what we want them to see is love, and through that love, God. God commands us to choose love, but, though He commands, we are also free to choose. Love or anger? “FOCUL DIN VATRA”

(THE FIRE IN THE HEARTH)

The first Sunday get together of our parish youth, under the theme

“The Fire in the Hearth” was a special success. Under the loving

direction of Natalia Durleșteanu, the teachers, Parish Priest,

parents and youth came to explore who and what we are all about.

This first lesson was taught by Father Remus Grama and seven

young presentors who explored Romanian Orthodox Christian

history. We prayed together, ate placinte and discussed historical

heroes, origins, faith and culture. This is intended to give the students a more robust understanding of who we are.

We live in a time when more and more people want to learn about their roots. Through

the cultural activities in our church, our children can grow knowing who they are. For

this, you, parents, must bring them to all these activities. A person is incomplete with-

out knowing his ancestors.

We invite all parish youth and parents to come together to the next

program, on March 10!

COME AS YOU ARE!

In the book of Genesis we notice how God actively

seeks his creation. If he was concerned about Adam, He

certainly cares for each one of us. Let us not allow any

worldly reason to prevent us from presenting ourselves

to God every Sunday! Righteous or sinner, please come!

God knows our most hidden thoughts and sins. Let us

get red of them and ask for God’s rescue and help,

saying “Lord, have merciful to me a sinner!” Come as

you are!

VENIŢI AŞA CUM SUNTEŢI

În cartea Facerii vedem cum Dumnezeu are permanent

grijă de creaţia Sa. Dacă El a fost îngrijorat de Adam, cu

siguranţă că îi pasă şi de fiecare dintre noi. Nici noi să

nu lăsăm nici un motiv lumesc să ne oprească de a veni

la Liturghie în fiecare Duminică! Drepţi sau păcătoşi,

veniţi! Dumnezeu ne cunoaşte toate gândurile ascunse şi

păcatele. Să ne curăţăm de ele, cerând ajutorul Dumnului

spunând: “Doamne miluieşte-mă pe mine păcătosul”.

Veniţi aşa cum sunteţi! Trebuie să începem îndreptarea

noastră de acolo unde ne aflăm.
