the good news Hope Presbyterian Church September News 2013 The Mission of Hope Church is to love and serve Jesus Christ, one another, and our neighbors. September 1, 2013 Volume 16, Issue 7 A PASTORAL WORD By: Reverend Laura C. Kelsey Dear Hope family and friends, Whenever I think about September, I see myself beginning a new school year with new school clothes, new books and a brand new slate for the gradebook is clean and I have a fresh start. These are some of my favorite memories and I have to admit that around this time of year I miss the familiar smell of new books and think nostalgically back to those days of yesteryear. Today is no different, but I also tend to dream about what this year will look like at Hope. What do we as a church need to focus upon and study? How is God nudging us, guiding us, and stretching us as a church and as individuals? How is God preparing us for folks to come and be with us as we serve the Lord together? How are we being melded and molded by the hands of the Almighty? Hope has been working on those questions for some time and we seek to use every opportunity that the Lord presents to celebrate our Savior Jesus Christ and discern how we are being called to love and serve. One of the highlights of our year thus far was the Back to School Bash where we handed out 105 school supply goody bags and other various school supplies and 19 backpacks fully stocked at the event. 15 stocked backpacks and school supplies were also delivered to Belcher Elementary. The Bash wasn’t exactly what I expected. I thought folks would come get a goody bag and hang out and have fun together. Those who needed a backpack were to call ahead and we had one waiting for them. However, most of those who came had genuine need and we chose to raffle off stocked backpacks to those in attendance. People stayed and waited through the raffling, live music, games and until the s’mores together. We had a wonderful opportunity to talk with folks, invite them to worship and begin the formation of relationship together. It was a good day! We really had a chance to talk, really talk with folks. We even had one of the attendees drive home and get charcoal to help get our fire going better. God was greatly working amongst us and we were blessed. I am very proud of all the ways folks are listening to God in their lives and reaching out in the name of Jesus Christ. I am also very excited about our fall programming and special events. We have Sunday School Start-Up (Sept. 8 th @ 9 AM), Back to Church Sunday and Brunch (Worship @ 10:15 AM and 5:30 PM and Brunch following the morning worship service), the 30 Day Challenge (Sept. 15 Oct. 20 th ) and the Hope Musical Benefit (Sept. 29 th @ 7PM) to benefit the mission and ministry needs of Hope. These are just the beginning with more events scheduled for October, November and December. There are so many ways to have fun together, worship Jesus Christ and be Christ’s Church in the world. I am so thankful for all the ways each person works to proclaim Christ in their lives. Please consider how God is calling you to serve the Lord and learn more about our Lord Jesus. Starting in September, the Session of Hope and their spouses will begin a monthly time of prayer and Bible study. We will use the book, The Story, which has the main Biblical Stories of the Bible and gathers these stories into 31 Chapters. The Session will study a chapter a month as we study the Scriptures in a deeper way. If you are interested in participating in a similar study and prayer time but are not currently on Session, please let me know and if enough folks are interested may add such a study to our Hope Calendar. Let each of us use this month of September as a time to reflect on God’s call upon our lives as we serve the Lord together. May you always be strengthened in your life and lift up God’s name wherever you go and to whomever you meet. Many Blessings upon you all! The Rev. Laura C. Kelsey, Pastor

Dear Hope family and friends, Whenever I think about September, I see myself beginning a new school year with new school clothes, new books and a brand new slate for the gradebook is clean and I have a fresh start. These are some of my favorite memories and I have to admit that around this time of year I miss the familiar smell of new books and think nostalgically back to those days of yesteryear. Janice Catron invites us to explore Exodus and Deuteronomy with her and see together the promise of what our relationship with God can be and the realities of what that relationship often becomes. It is God our Redeemer who, by grace, gives us the power to help ourselves and others live into the fullness God intends for us, and to move forward as people who have been set free.

Sunday School for All Ages returns to its Fall Schedule

on September 8th at 9:00 am Children’s and Youth Sunday School Ages 3—12th Grade are set to begin on Rally Day, Sept. 8th. Children and Youth will enjoy a Bible-based curriculum designed to meet their age-appropriate needs and have lots of fun along the way. While our children are learning about Jesus, Hope Adults are also learning through two Bible Classes: Wired Word Led by: Martha Huntley, Bob Stevens Wired Word uses the Bible and Current Events to discuss how our faith and our life in this world are tied together. A fun study for the believer engaged in questions of faith as they live in the world. Bible Baffle Led by: Mark Abdo Some wonder if Hope folks are always set out to have fun? They are! The Coffee Pot Class (as Pastor Laura calls them because they meet in the room closest to the coffee pots) are using the game Bible Baffle to engage with the texts they may not know as well as they answer questions of faith. Come and take part in learning about God and asking questions together.

To meet our extra budget needs, in January the Session asked attendees if able to increase their giving by $3.50 each week or approximately $14 a month.

Please consider this Challenge that greatly helps meet Hope’s ministry and mission needs.
