    Data from Comunidad Ignacio Tavara

The 'Jose Ignacio Tavara Pasapera' is a peasant communityrecognized by the Peruvian Government in 1986, assigning them,

2000 families 52,269 ha of land. The Community's mainactivities are livestock raising, depending on algarroba production

and seasonal pastures for their maintenance, temporaryagriculture over very small areas and only during the rainy

season, destined for self consumption. Forestry activities arerestricted by a forest law that prohibited wood harvesting without

an approved management plan. And in the past years beebreeding and hone production is an important economical issue.

the Jose Ignacio Tavara Pasapera community have been working on

dry forest management and recovery since 1992, introducing

sustainable management activities of near to 3,000 ha.

Complementarily, the genetic quality of their livestock and thelivestock management techniques are being improved, and family

orchards have been introduced to assure food safety. At the

moment, the community is fully engaged to achieve the

sustainable management of their lands, understanding thatforests are part of their l ife and that sustainable management is a

key issue to enhance their life quality
