From the office of the Chief…

For many of you, this will be the first time you have seen the Third Alarm in its electronic format. I may be somewhat biased, but I think it looks pretty darn good with all of colour photos actually in colour. So please enjoy this new edition. With us in the midst of winter there not a whole lot of buffing activities going on. That, however, does not mean nothing is happening. Activities Director has a full and interesting slate of tours planned for 2012 (check out the activities page).Of course the BIG event is the IFBA convention in Toronto and hosted by our friends at GTMAA. Please plan on attending the event, possibly even helping out a bit and give the organizers a huge show of support. So, for now, be safe, stay warm, enjoy what’s left of winter and I will see you at one of our many events this year. Rick Loiselle, President, OFBA

From our Membership Secretary…

I hope that everyone had an enjoyable holiday season and are now looking forward to another year of fire buffing. It promises to be a very interesting one, with another six issues of The Third Alarm, a great line-up of photo tours, the Fire Services Collectibles Show and a most important event - the International Fire Buff Associates Convention, which is to be held in Toronto this summer. Many of you have already sent in your dues along with the information sheet regarding the new format of The Third Alarm and we thank you for your quick response. It is interesting to note that, to date, approximately 30% have requested the electronic version. As this is the all photo issue, many of you will get to see all the photos in living colour. However, there are still a large number from whom we have not as yet heard, and it is very important to do so before the next issue is published. If you are requesting the electronic version, please be sure to include your e-mail address, as we do not have all of them and some have changed. Robert Herscovitch, Membership Secretary

From the Editor…

Welcome to the first combined edition of the TA. For those of you who have chosen the on-line option, this marks the first time all of the pictures appear for you in vibrant colour. Once again, a large number of contributors helped make this edition what it is: photographs by Bertrand Campo, Ken Buchanan, Dave Stewardson, Walt McCall, Herb Galloway, Robert Herscovitch, Ian Duke, Mark Appleman, Rob Simpson, Kenneth Lai and, as always, Neil McCarten. Articles and rosters were supplied by Walt, Ken, Ian, Neil, John Bowerman and Reed Wannamaker. Production services were, as always, provided in a timely and, for me, hassle free manner by Kevin Plested. Many thanks to the aforementioned, and to all of you who expressed your appreciation and support over the past year. I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome the new editor of the Booster Line to the august ranks of fire-buffing journalism. Bill Middleton of St. Catharines took the helm at the end of 2011 and his first issue indicates he will continue the standard set by outgoing editor Bob Rupert who decided to direct his energies to the OFBA, joining our executive after a mere 28 years of producing the RNFB’s excellent newsletter. For those looking to contribute to the BL, Bill can be reached at [email protected]. Best of luck Bill, and welcome aboard Bob. Desmond Brett, Editor, Third Alarm

The Apparatus Floor:

Kevin Plested reports that another of the Spartan/Smeal rigs is now in service in Vaughan. “Engine 7-10” started running on January 5 from Station 78 (new hall still being built at 10,800 Dufferin St). Note the new call sign being tested. The 2011 Spartan/Smeal pumper is the second such apparatus bought by the VFRS, the other is running as 711. In addition a 2011 Spartan/Smeal 55’ quint replaced unit 726 during the summer, another of these has just been delivered, destined for 756 sometime in February/March this year.

Some tidbits from John Bowerman: Lambton College Fire School has purchased ex-Mississauga Aerial 151, a 1990 Pierce Lance/Superior 1250/250/105’ quint, and a pumper from a Windsor area department. Suncor have taken delivery of a new E-one pumper similar to the one that Esso got a couple of years ago. They also have a new Rescue/Hazmat/Command unit. They have taken the 1981 Ford 9000/King pumper (FT1) & the 1985 Ford F800/CDN Nordic (FT6) out of service. Both trucks had the back ends taken off & had flat beds put on to be used elsewhere in the refinery. In Warwick, both the pumper & rescue were severely damaged in the 402 pileup on January 19th. They have both been sent out for estimates.

Halifax has ordered four pumpers from Carl Thibault on Spartan Metro Star chassis. They are tentatively assigned to Stations 41, 42, 58 and 62. They are expected in late spring and all four pumps they are replacing will be sold off.

Hamilton News from Ken Buchanan: ArcelorMittal - Dofasco have taken delivery of a new Rescue 2. It is a 2012 Wilcox - GMC 2500. The unit is red and has a "Squad 51" type box with power tailgate on a 4 door cab (see pic on page 17 of this issue). Hamilton is sending 4 rigs to the Auction, Pumper 46 and 51, both 1988 Dependable/Freightiners, Pump 50 a 1991 Amertec/Volvo/White and Pump 49 a 1990 Thibault/Volvo/White are being stripped of decals and lettering and will be disposed of. Former Support 24, an ex ambulance is going to Station 17 as the confined space rig replacing P 49. Further changes coming in the New Year will see the former Pump 12 going to Stn 21 as Pump 21 for the volunteers (the paid rig is the engine) Ladder 21 is to go to Binbrook as Ladder 18 for ladder coverage and Pump 118 will join the spare pool. Former Ladder 1 has gone to Ladder 10 and former Ladder 10 has gone to the training Division as Ladder 90 Tenders have gone out for ex Ladder 4 to be re-painted R&W, it is slated to go to Stn 16 and current Ladder 16 is to go to the auction. Once this is done Pump 118 and Ladder 70 will be the only yellow rigs left. As in any Hamilton move this is carved in butter and may change! Ken also reports Hamilton's Platoon Chief has gone back to running a district. He runs out of Central and takes in everything from Sherman Ave westward to the Wellington County Line. District 2 had moved back to 8 and runs everything east of Sherman to the Grimsby town line. District 3 remains at Stn 2, District 2 will cover part of his eastern district. Robert Campo tells us Quebec City as ordered a second Tiller from Pierce (there was an option to order a second one when they awarded the contract to Pierce). The second tiller is going to Quebec FD station 2. The City of Montreal has awarded a contract to Aéro-Feu, the Rosenbauer dealer in Quebec, to built 4 Rosenbauer T-REX 114 feet articulating platforms. The amount of the contract is $5,774,039.90, taxes included. The only other bidder was Pierce (Bronto Skylift). They will replace the last 4 Bronto-Skylifts still in front line service (Unit 734-743-739 Freightliner/Anderson 1990, 27 m, and Unit 771 Simon Duplex D9600/Anderson 1991 Bronto SkyLift, 31.3m). The only Bronto that will be kept as a spare will be Unit 771 (ex City of Saint-Laurent FD before the 2002 amalgamation). Public bid for pumpers: The 5 year contract with E-One for pumpers and aerial is ending in 2011 so the city of Montreal is opening a public bid for a 5 year contract (2012-2016) to provide 35 pumpers (7 per year). Specs for the pumpers: PUC or e-Max style. Toronto is ordering for 6 new tandem axle rearmount aerials from Smeal on Spartan chassis, and a new 30' command unit from EVI. Reed Wannamaker reports that Mississauga’s new Station 116 is open for business (see pic on page 9) at 6825 Tompken Rd. Caledon has acquired a quint demonstrator from Dependable, the 2006 rig is destined for Station 302 in Bolton but may have to wait until the new hall is constructed. The department also acquired a 2000 gal tanker from DEV on a Freightliner M2 chassis. It has a 500gpm pump and 25gft and was placed in station 304.

WINDSOR’S SUTPHEN TOWERS

By Walt McCall

The Windsor Fire & Rescue Service has the distinction of operating more Sutphen Aerial Towers – five in all -- than any other fire department in Canada. There’s an interesting reason for this. Former Windsor firefighter David T. Fields went on to a second career with the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office and later became Deputy Chief of the Nepean Fire Department, a prosperous, suburb of Ottawa. A fire buff and apparatus aficionado at heart, Chief Fields was impressed with the Sutphen aerial towers he had seen on many US fire departments – so much so that he eventually spearheaded the purchase of two big chrome-yellow 100-footers for the Nepean Fire Department. When he returned to Windsor as Chief in1994, Dave brought his unbridled enthusiasm for the Sutphen Tower back to Windsor with him. In the mid-1990s, when the WFRS was spec’ing new aerial equipment, he arranged to have a Sutphen demonstrator brought to Windsor. That, as they say, was the clincher. Clarence Sutphen founded his fire equipment sales business in Columbus, Ohio in 1890. Mr. Sutphen added motor fire apparatus to his wares when he became a sales agent for the Prospect Fire Engine Company in the 1920s. By the 1950s, Sutphen Fire Equipment was occasionally turning out a complete fire truck on commercial truck chassis such as Ford and Chevrolet. But it was the introduction of the pioneering Sutphen Aerial Tower in 1963 that almost overnight transformed the company into a major player in the firefighting aerial platform business. The elevating platform, or Snorkel burst upon the firefighting scene in the late 1950s. By the early 1960s several firms were marketing articulating-boom aerial firefighting platforms on various custom and commercial fire apparatus chassis. Mounted on a tilt-cab Ford chassis, the prototype Sutphen Tower featured a mid-ship mounted, three-section telescopic boom with two-man basket and prepiped monitor nozzles at its tip. The open-lattice boom was bolted together instead of welded, resulting in a light but exceptionally strong structure. The first Sutphen Tower was delivered to Norwalk, Ohio. Hundreds more have since been sold all over North America. Sutphen’s head office and plant is located in the Columbus suburb of Amlin, Ohio In the city’s largest-ever single fire apparatus acquisition program, Windsor ordered no fewer than five Sutphen Aerial Towers for delivery during 1998. The three big towers had 95-foot booms. The other two were “mini-towers” with 70-foot booms. All were “quints”, equipped with 1,050 gallon-per-minute pumps, 300-gallon booster tanks with preconnected attack lines, hose beds and a complement of portable ground ladders. All had four-door crew cabs with raised rear roofs. The first of the towers, a 95-footer, was delivered in March, 1998. After extensive crew training, it was placed in service as Truck 6 two months later. The other two 95-footers were assigned to Truck 4 and Truck 1. One of the 70-foot mini-towers was exhibited at the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs (OAFC) convention in London in May. The two mini-towers were placed into service as Engine 2 and Engine 3. The last of the new towers was in front-line service by late October of that year. The 95-foot towers replaced two Hi-Ranger Snorkels purchased in 1971 and 1982, and Thibault and Pierreville Spartan midship aerials delivered in 1981 and 1982. Over the 14 years that have passed since their purchase, the white-over-red Sutphens have seen action at every major fire in Windsor. All five of the new Sutphens battled the riverfront Holiday Inn conflagration on April 8, 1999 – the only time all of them were used at the same fire. The Sutphen Towers have stood up well during their years of hard urban fire service. As this is being written however, the sun is setting on this notable phase of Windsor fire service history. One of the 95’Sutphen Quints was sold to the Essex Fire Department a year ago and plans are being drafted for the replacement of the other four with new aerial devices After 14 years of dependable service, the four remaining Sutphens are still going strong.
