MARCH 1999

The Editor's Corner: A Commentary Being new to Staff Advisory Council and fairly new to the UM Sy tem I have been impressed by the level of interest in Staff Recognition Week. Last year was my first year here at UM System. Staff Recognition Week made me feel very much appreciated. It was great for morale and camaraderie. The way in which so many events were carried on in such a short amount of time with hardly a mi step was very impressive. Ijoined UM-SAC in October and now I am beginning to get a glimpse of what actually goe on behind the scene to make this event po ible. Things like thi do not "j ust happen" . Many people put in many long hours to make all of this come about. The level of upport, financiall y, from the UM Administration is also impressive. The majority of our top administrators are about as new to their positions as am 1. They have asked UM-SAC to take a close look at Staff Recognition Week, the number of events, the duration , and the amount of money involved. A major part of their responsibilities is to ensure that public dollars are spent wisely. Could any of us disagree with their doing so? It would indeed be neg li gent simply to approve any budget item merely because " that's the way it was last year".

The Council held a pecial meeting in January to decide how be t to implement this request. Our biggest problem was with timing. Traditionally Staff Recogni tion Week has been held in May. But with the amount of planning and work required , especially for the lengthy nomination process involved with Staff Recogn ition Awards, there simply was not enough time to do a responsible job of evaluati ng the events, reporting to the admin istration, and carrying off the events in May. After a good deal of healthy discussion we decided to move the event to September in order to give ourselves adequate time to consider carefull y a ll the option involved, to schedule the events during nice weather, and to avoid extremely busy periods in as many offices as possible.

Editor's Corner (Continued)

The February UM-SAC meeting was almost entirely concerned with Staff Recognition Week. We had several past UM-SAC members present, including three past presidents. They had some interesting idea and concerns. Thei r input certain ly broadened the range of discussion within the Council itsel f. Several of their suggestions were incorporated into the attached survey. I have also heard many ideas and concerns from fellow staff members here at Uni versity Hall. The impression I have come away with is that Staff Recognition Week matters a great deal to a great many people. Many long years have gone into building up thi s event. Hopefully you will be wi lling to take a few minutes to fill out the attached urvey, if for no other reason than to how omething other than indifference toward all of the e

hour and all of thi work.

This co lumn represent my own view and impressions. They do not necessarily represent the views of the Staff Advi sory Council , the Admini tration , or any other person. Ken Dunn-Editor, UM Staff Advisor
