Well, here we are in a new year and here I am as the new Executive Director of Lubbock Meals on Wheels. As I write my last full newsletter, I now write my first Executive Director article for the newsletter. Although I have served as Assistant Director for the past fifteen years, stepping into this new role will definitely be an adjustment, one that I am well prepared for having so many years of experience at this amazing organization. We all bid our previous Executive Director, Lorrie Lushnat Bellair, a fond farewell at her retirement party in November and we all wish her the best of luck in this new chapter of her life. Lorrie and I enjoyed many years working together, laughing together, and having many adventures and experiences that I will cherish always. I hope she knows, as I do, that she has left the agency in the hands of a very hard working and dedicated group of staff and volunteers that will

continue the mission with the utmost compassion, integrity, and care. The staff has all pulled together to get through our busy holiday season and even managed

to add four new delivery routes. Lubbock Meals on Wheels is now serving over 625 meals a day, the most in our agency’s history. The task of writing the newsletter will now fall in the capable hands of our new Assistant Director, Mary Gerlach, who joined our team in mid-January. Mary brings years of experience that I believe will make her a great asset to our organization and I hope you will all join us in welcoming her to our Lubbock Meals on Wheels’ family.

As for me, thank you all for your support and patience during this transition. I consider it an honor and a privilege to be given the opportunity to lead such an incredible organization alongside our tremendous staff and the best volunteers in town. I look forward to another year of serving the homebound, elderly, and disabled and with your help making our community an even better place to live.

a note from the executive director

Everyone Loves Pie! The twenty-second annual “Feed a Friend – It’s as Easy as Pie” fundraiser was held the week before Thanksgiving, raising an amazing $61,034.41! A special thank you to our “pie angel”, Genia Davis, for generously donating to the event once again filling the void left by the passing of our previous pie angel, Donald Finkner. Thank you very much to United Supermarkets, KLBK, KAMC, and Sara Lee, Corp. for their help in making this fundraiser possible. Congratulations to Jesse Lopez of United who won the pie eating contest that kicked off the Easy as Pie event. Thanks to the other contest participants: Mudflap of KLLL, Nikki Dee Ray of KLBK, Ron Roberts of KAMC, Shelby Crews of United Supermarkets, Criminal District Attorney Matt Powell, entertainer Kenny Maines, and Councilman Todd Klein and to former champion Rick Gilbert of True Country Radio for trying to keep an eye on everyone while judging the event. Congratulations to Eugene Ford and his employees at the 98th & Quaker Market Street for having the largest increase in donations for the event. Finally, thanks to all the radio stations that promoted the fundraiser and to the massive number of volunteers, store checkers, and donors who so generously supported the event. This was one of the most successful Easy as Pie events ever, and we thank you for making it happen.

Lubbock Meals on Wheels is excited to announce the receipt of another grant for the Pet Food Program from Banfield Charitable Trust! The grant for $2500 is to be used for the purchase of pet food for our Pet Food Program that has been in existence since 1999.

Since 2003, Banfield Charitable Trust (BCT) has been working to keep the most vulnerable populations together with their pet companions. With the help of their donors, they promote the human-pet bond which provides mental, physical, and emotional benefits to our communities. They work to prevent the surrendering of pets which needlessly burdens public and private shelters. This includes funding pet food distribution programs across the country for homebound seniors through Meals on Wheels programs.

Lubbock Meals on Wheels is grateful for this generous grant that will help feed the four-legged companions of our homebound, elderly, and disabled clients.

So Many ThanksMany groups, organizations, clubs, businesses, schools, and individuals made generous donations throughout the holiday season, and we are truly grateful for their support. Space limitations prevent a complete listing of all the names, but that does not mean our appreciation is any less. To all who were kind enough to bring monetary, food, and other donations or supported us through the purchase of pecans, quiche, ornaments, Christmas tributes, or engraved bricks - please know that your gifts made a significant difference in the lives of the homebound, elderly, and disabled right here in our community. On behalf of Lubbock Meals on Wheels’ Board of Directors, staff, and recipients thank you for your commitment and support.

This is just a small sample of the many kind thank you cards, letters, and notes that Lubbock Meals on Wheels received during the holidays from our recipients or their family members. We also received numerous phone calls expressing gratitude for all the holiday extras. We would like to share these

kind words with all of our donors, volunteers, and the many other people who made the holidays very special for our clients through their gifts for the Twelve Days of Christmas Project, the Santa to a Senior Program, the Senior Food Box delivery, the Weekend Meal Program, the Pet Food Program, and the Hot Meal Program.

Meals on Wheels’ Staff,Thank you very much for all of the goodies that you gave me for the Christmas holidays. Also the after Christmas and the New Year and the meals that are furnished for holidays and/or inclement bad weather. Sincerely, Lottie

The food and service have been extra great. Thanks much, Lena

Thanks to each of you who sent a gift to all of us who get Meals on Wheels. It was a very sweet thought for you to do this! Wanda

Dear Everyone at Meals on WheelsI love all of you! From management to cooks (just thinking of all the pots and pans – whatever you have to wash – overwhelms me!) When you can, please give my thanks to the school and church kids for their great artworks. The two I’ve already received show great promise for them. I hope they stay interested in art. It makes you happy to do it and we who receive it. Everyone needs art and music in their lives. And of course, thanks to the volunteers who deliver! On Friday, December 6th I happened to not be in the shower and so I was able to thank her and get a big friendly smile. She braved my icy ramp to get to my door and back down. A gentleman did that also recently. He looked so cold (I watched as he went to the next house – and he wasn’t young either). Syble

My Dear Friends at Meals on Wheels,Thank you all for all you do for all us old ones that can no longer do for ourselves- for the food and extras. Mostly for the smiling angels that bring it. They are special people and brighten my days. Amy

I hope this will help someone who needs a meal and company during the holidays. As you know, I receive Meals on Wheels myself and am on a very fixed income but I also know what it is like not to be able to do for myself and you and your staff are my connection to the outside world. Thank you so much for being there for me as I live alone and am handicapped. God Bless you and your staff during the holidays and all year round. Love you all, Lupe

Your volunteers deliver to me every day. I need to see their smiling face at my door as much as I need the meals. Hope this helps others as much as it helps me. W.D.

Thank you so much for all you do. Lois

Thank you so much for delicious meals, newspapers, flowers, and most of all SMILES and uplifting greetings. Thank you to the participants in the 12 Days of Christmas gifts.May God Bless all this holiday season. Joan

On behalf of Lubbock Meals on Wheels’ staff and recipients, thank you very much to all of you who helped make the holidays special for our clients.

Gone but not soon ForgottenAll of us at Lubbock Meals on Wheels were very sad to learn that two of our very special friends, Tammy Stegall and Virginia “Ginny” Riggs passed

away right after the holidays. Tammy was on staff as our Program Coordinator until an illness required her to retire in 2012. Although she battled cancer for five years, she never complained and instead chose to focus on others. She was patient, kind, fun, and one of the strongest people we have ever met. We will remember her fondly and miss her greatly. Ginny was a long-time volunteer and supporter at Lubbock Meals on Wheels. She was always cheerful, quick-witted, and extremely generous. We truly enjoyed her friendship and will miss her smiling face and warm hugs. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies go to Tammy’s and Ginny’s families and friends during this difficult time.

Once again, Lubbock Meals on Wheels completed the Twelve Days of Christmas Project. Thanks to the hard work of various schools, businesses, organizations, and individuals, the clients of Lubbock Meals on Wheels received a different special treat on each of the twelve working days prior to the Christmas holiday. Items included puzzles, calendars, note cards, edible goodies, as well as personal and household necessities. Pets were not forgotten as each animal on the Pet Program received a Christmas treat bag. Thank you to all the volunteers who made these extra special deliveries, and thank you to the following groups for giving our recipients a treat to look forward to everyday:

Thank you to the following for their help with this special program

(September 17-January 15)

Many of our meal recipients do not see anyone during the day except our volunteers so they rely on their pets for companionship. Most of our recipients obviously have difficulty buying groceries and preparing meals; they have the same challenges feeding their pets. The Pet Food Program continues to meet this need and supplies dog and cat food to these companion animals. Thank you to all of you who have helped continue this special program. Donations of dry dog and dry cat food are always needed and welcomed.

Lubbock Avalanche Journal continues to provide 210 newspapers per day (Monday – Friday) to be distributed free of charge to clients in Lubbock and Idalou. AJ Readers are generously sponsoring this special project. Lubbock Meals on Wheels is very excited to continue this partnership and looks forward to providing yet another “extra” to our meal recipients.

Extra! Extra! Read All About It!

Everyone Can Make a Difference Thanks to our long-time friends and supporters from Metropolitan Lubbock Rotary who presented us with a $1500 donation in October. We are thankful for Mark McCall Photography’s donation of $140 and canned food from the Halloween Photo Shoot. A special thank you goes to Caprock Classic Car Club for their gift of $500 in October. We are grateful to the Wayne & Jo Ann Moore Charitable Foundation for a very special grant they provided in memory of our long-time volunteer, Emily Ann Gilmer. The Evelyn Davies Foundation also made an extremely generous gift that allowed us to have new carpet installed as well as acquire some other much needed equipment. Thank you to Community Christian Church for their hard work and incredibly generous donation of $8,500 from the Holiday Extravaganza they held in November. We truly appreciate our friends at Lubbock Community Theater for donating $580 from their Stuff the Stocking Event. Thanks also to the South Plains Food Bank for the senior food boxes sent to over 400 of our clients. Our gratitude also goes to Home Instead Senior Care and all the individuals who supported the Santa to a Senior project that benefited 320 of our clients. A big thank you goes to Pets Plus for collecting pet food and treat bags for our Pet Program throughout the entire month of December. Thank you also to the Texas Tech Red & Black Gives Back for donating basketball tickets to our volunteers in December. A thank you to South Plains Lions Club for their generous gift of $5000 in November. We were also honored and grateful to be chosen as recipients of the Goodfellows funds through the Lubbock Avalanche Journal. We received another tremendous surprise in December when Lubbock Meals on Wheels was the first charity to be chosen in the Pay it Forward program on KCBD. We were shocked when Cary Allen of KCBD walked into our office with Edward Rodriguez who chose to donate the $300 to our agency. Also, thanks to 9th grader Carolyn Benitez who once again held a month long pet food drive to collect food for our Pet Food Program. Thank you also to all those who were kind enough to donate to our Fall and Holiday Meal mail campaigns. We also owe a huge thank you to all of the volunteers who not only delivered the hot meals but all of the extra items for the 12 Days of Christmas, the senior food boxes, and other various donations of gifts and food. These are excellent examples of what an incredible impact people can make in the lives of others. If you would like to make a difference this year, please keep Lubbock Meals on Wheels in mind.
